Secretome of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells as a Possible Innovative Therapeutic Tool in Facial Nerve Injury Treatment.

Facial nerve palsy is a serious neurological condition that strongly affects patient everyday life. Standard treatments provide insufficient improvement and are burdened with the risk of severe complications, e.g., facial synkinesis. Mesenchymal stromal cell-based therapies are a novel and extensively developed field which offers new treatment approaches with promising results in regards to the nervous tissue regeneration. The potential of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to aid the regeneration of damaged nerves has been demonstrated in several preclinical models, as well as in several clinic

Surgical approaches for condylar fractures related to facial nerve injury: deep versus superficial dissection.

The aim of this study was to investigate the probability of facial nerve injury (FNI) in the treatment of condylar neck and subcondylar fractures (CN/SCFs) with percutaneous approaches and to identify factors predicting FNI. The data of 80 patients with 87 CN/SCFs were evaluated retrospectively. The primary outcome was FNI occurrence. The predictor variables were age, sex, aetiology, alcohol consumption, fracture site and pattern (dislocation or not), concomitant fractures, time interval to surgery, surgeon experience, plate type, and the dual classification of percutaneous approaches. The app

Traumatic Facial and Vestibulocochlear Nerve Injury in The Internal Acoustic Canal in The Absence of A Temporal Bone Fracture.

We present a rare case of traumatic facial and vestibulocochlear nerve injury in the internal acoustic canal in the absence of a temporal bone fracture. A 2.5-year-old female presented with sudden-onset left-sided facial paralysis and ipsilateral total hearing loss after being hit by a falling television. High-resolution computed tomography revealed an occipital fracture line that spared the temporal bone and otic capsule. Diagnostic auditory brainstem response testing showed that wave V at 90-db normal hearing level was absent in the left ear. Needle electromyography revealed severe axonal in

Early and continued manual stimulation is required for long-term recovery after facial nerve injury.

INTRODUCTION: We previously have shown that manual stimulation (MS) of vibrissal muscles for 2 months after facial nerve injury in rats improves whisking and reduces motor end plate polyinnervation. Here, we seek to determine whether discontinuing or delaying MS after facial-facial anastomosis (FFA) leads to similar results. METHODS: Rats were subjected to FFA and received MS for (1) 4 months (early and continued), (2) the first but not the last 2 months (discontinued), or (3) the last 2 months (delayed). Intact animals and those not receiving MS (no MS) were also examined. RESULTS: Early an

Does a Retromandibular Transparotid Approach for the Open Treatment of Condylar Fractures Result in Facial Nerve Injury?

PURPOSE: The retromandibular transparotid approach (RMA) to condylar fractures of the mandible provides excellent access, but can increase the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) and associated postoperative complications after open reduction and rigid internal fixation (ORIF) of subcondylar fractures through the RMA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with condylar fractures requiring ORIF through the RMA. The inclusion criteria were 1) a medical record of surgical treatment of a subc

[Influence of p75 neurotrophin receptor knockout on the regeneration of facial nerves after crush injury in mouse].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) in the regeneration of facial nerve crush injury. METHODS: In p75NTR knockout mice and wild type mice, the regenerating fibres in the facial nerve were also labelled by an anterograde tracer cholera toxin B (CTB). The next day after injury of facial nerve, CTB was injected into the trunk of the nerve in the proximal side of the crush, and then anterograde tracing and immunohistochemistry were used to examine the regeneration of axons after facial nerve crush injury. In p75NTR knockout mice and wild type mice, the facial

Influence of injury severity on the rate and magnitude of the T lymphocyte and neuronal response to facial nerve axotomy.

The temporal relationship between severity of peripheral axonal injury and T lymphocyte trafficking to the neuronal cell bodies of origin in the brain has been unclear. We sought to test the hypothesis that greater neuronal death induced by disparate forms of peripheral nerve injury would result in differential patterns of T cell infiltration and duration at the cell bodies of origin in the brain and that these measures would correlate with the magnitude of neuronal death over time and cumulative neuronal loss. To test this hypothesis, we compared the time course of CD3(+) T cell infiltration

Prior facial motor neuron injury elicits endogenous T cell memory: relation to neuroregeneration.

We tested the hypotheses that prior injury to the facial motor nucleus (FMN) would elicit a more robust T cell response in the opposite FMN when the contralateral facial nerve was injured later in life, and that this would result in improved neuroregeneration. Measures of T cell, neuronal and microglial status were compared in sensitized mice (right facial nerve transection followed by contralateral facial nerve transection 9.5 weeks later) and naïve mice (sham surgery of the right facial nerve followed by contralateral facial nerve transection 9.5 weeks later) following axotomy of the contral

Minocycline does not inhibit microglia proliferation or neuronal regeneration in the facial nucleus following crush injury.

Minocycline is thought to be neuroprotective by inhibiting neuroinflammation (microglial activation) associated with neurodegenerative diseases. In this study we investigated the effect of minocycline specifically on microglial mitotic activity and neuronal regeneration within the facial nucleus following a nerve crush injury. Proliferation was measured by labeling the dividing microglia with 3H-thymidine and quantifying labeled cells throughout the facial nucleus on days 2, 3 and 4 post-axotomy. Regeneration patterns of the axotomized motoneurons were studied by labeling regenerating neurons

Does the face protect the brain? A case-control study of traumatic brain injury and facial fractures.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between facial fractures and traumatic brain injury is controversial. Some studies show an increased risk of brain injury with the presence of facial fractures while others claim that facial fractures protect against brain injury. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between facial fractures and traumatic brain injuries. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Subjects were recruited from the emergency departments of 7 hospitals in the Seattle, Wash, area. PATIENTS: Three thousand eight hundred forty-nine injured bicyclists and 5 scene deaths were identified from

Effects of facial nerve injury on mouse motoneurons lacking the p75 low-affinity neurotrophin receptor.

When motoneuron axons in peripheral nerves are injured, the expression of the p75 low-affinity neurotrophin receptor (p75) increases in their cell bodies and axons, as well as in the Schwann cells undergoing Wallerian degeneration in the distal excised nerve segment. To understand the role of p75 in the events following nerve injury, we have examined the survival and regeneration of motoneurons in mice lacking the p75 receptor. In adult p75 (-/-) mice, functional recovery of whiskers movement following a facial nerve crush occurred slightly earlier than in p75 (+/+) mice, and some recovery of

Millard-Gubler Syndrome in a Patient with Preeclampsia. Case Report and Review of Combined Intra- and Extra-Axial Facial and Abducens Nerve Injuries.

Millard-Gubler syndrome is a pontine syndrome caused by a lesion in the lower pons region. It is characterised by ipsilateral facial paralysis and VI paresis and contralateral brachiocrural palsy. We present the case of a female patient, G4P2A1, at 21 weeks of gestation, with preeclampsia, complaints of blurred vision, diplopia, and right hemiparesis, in whom a clinical diagnosis of Millard-Gubler syndrome was made. Neuroimaging showed an intraparenchymal haemorrhage towards the central portion of the bulbopontine junction. An extensive aetiological study was carried out to determine the cause

A case report of reconstruction of ocular and complete upper eyelid avulsion with severe facial soft tissue injuries using anterolateral thigh free flap.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ocular injury is second mostly caused by motor vehicle accident (MVA) and often leads to severe ocular injury even to visual loss and various aesthetic problems. The outcome is determined by the magnitude of the initial damage and treatment availability. Treating ocular and facial injury due to MVA is challenging given the scope of the damage and may result in various outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: This case presented a 22-years old woman with a history of car accident assessed with total upper eyelid avulsion with corneal perforation and involvement of multiple fac

The effect of the mandatory use of face masks on facial lacerations and head and neck injuries in ice hockey. A prospective study.

A 4-year prospective review of lost-time injuries and facial lacerations was performed for a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I, intercollegiate ice hockey team. The total injury exposure time consisted of 798.5 practice hours and 163 games. There were 16 facial lacerations, with an incidence of 14.9 per 1000 player-game hours and 0.1 per 1000 player-practice hours; both incidences were found to be less than in previous comparable studies where the use of face masks was not mandatory. In addition, there were eight lost-time head and neck injuries that accounted for 6.3% of all
