Long way to impact health: outputs and outcomes of a four-year multilevel participatory family health promotion programme in a low-income neighbourhood.

INTRODUCTION: Improving health, in particular of people in a disadvantaged socioeconomic position (SEP), requires multilevel health promotion programmes with community engagement. However, the impacts of such complex and challenging programmes are not yet clear. This study aims to show the impact of a participatory multilevel family health promotion programme in a low-income neighbourhood at intrapersonal, interpersonal, organisational, community and policy level. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was used to monitor and assess output and outcome realisation by parents and professionals from mu…

Body Size Discrimination, Family Emotional Climate, and Chronic Health Incidence in Middle Age: A Longitudinal Study.

Body size discrimination has been significantly linked to adverse health outcomes. Although family emotional climate has been shown to influence health outcomes, few studies have tested if various aspects of family emotional climate either buffer or exacerbate chronic disease onset related to size discrimination. Using a subsample of the MIDUS 1 and 2 projects, we conducted a longitudinal analysis to test the relationship between perceived size discrimination, family support, and family strain and likelihood of various adverse outcomes as well as interaction effects between both family support

Family environment profiles and mental health characteristics among Chinese middle school students: A latent profile analysis.

This study utilized latent profile analysis (LPA) to explore the heterogeneous profiles of family environments and their associations with mental health among Chinese middle school students. Using data from 2139 participants, we identified three distinct family environment profiles through LPA: Supportive (high cohesion, low conflict), Balanced (moderate cohesion and conflict), and Conflicted (low cohesion, high conflict). Significant mental health variations were observed across these profiles. Adolescents from Conflicted families reported the highest levels of depression, anxiety, stress, an

Personal care burden and emotional symptoms among young carers supporting family members with mental health problems.

AIM: Although research on the prevalence and psychological difficulties of young carers has increased, little is known about how their difficulties differ according to the type of disability or illness of the care recipient. This study examined the association between the type of disability of care recipients and psychological difficulties among Japanese junior and senior high school students. METHODS: A total of 860 students participated in a self-administered survey that included the Young Carers Scale-Japanese version (YCS-J), the Multidimensional Assessment of Caring Activities Checklist

Family Structure, Dwelling and Household Factors, and the Mental Health of Immigrant and Canadian-Born Mothers.

AIMS: To investigate the association between household contextual factors and the mental health of immigrant and Canadian-born mothers. METHODS: Guided by Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, we used the General Social Survey 2016, 2017 and 2018 to examine the differences in family and dwelling characteristics of immigrant and Canadian-born mothers. We then used multivariable binary logistic regression models to estimate associations between family structure, income, marital status, household size, and dwelling type and ownership, and the odds of having poor or fair self-rated mental h

How spousal, friend, and family ties predict health: Within- and between-person effects across 16 years.

Relationships with spouses, family, and friends influence health, yet their effects are often assessed separately. Relationship quality fluctuates over time, and while some couples effectively navigate these ups and downs, others may experience stress and strain. Guided by dyadic stress and support frameworks, we examined how positive and negative spousal, friend, and family ties contribute to subjective health within and across the first 16 years of marriage. We took a within-person approach to examine how ties beyond couples' marriages protect or wear on health, particularly in the years wit

The Influence of Personal and Family Support on Maternal Cardiovascular Health: Insights from a TriNetX Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal cardiovascular health during and after pregnancy is shaped by biological, behavioral, and social factors. Inadequate personal and family support remains underexplored as a driver of postpartum cardiovascular risk. Understanding this relationship is vital for developing targeted interventions. METHODS: Using the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Network, we examined postpartum cardiovascular outcomes among women aged 15-60 years with documented problems in personal or family support (poor support cohort, Cohort 1) compared with matched controls (Cohort 2) with no support-related

Family and school support systems associated with mental health in Chinese migrant and non-migrant children.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that migrant children often have weaker family and school support and poorer mental health than non-migrant peers, although recent evidence indicates that these disparities may be narrowing. Rather than focusing solely on mean-level group differences, the present study examined whether the pathways linking family and school support with mental health differ between migrant and non-migrant children. METHODS: Guided by ecological systems theory, this study investigated the associations among parent-child communication, peer relationships, perceived te

Epidemiology and genetic determination of measures of peripheral vascular health in the Long Life Family Study.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major contributor to morbidity in older adults. We aimed to determine genetic and non-genetic determinants of PAD and ankle-brachial index (ABI) in the Long Life Family Study (LLFS). 3006 individuals had ABI assessment, including 1090 probands (mean age 89), 1554 offspring (mean age 60) and 362 spousal controls (mean age 61). Outcomes include minimum of right and left ABIs and PAD (ABI <0.9). Stepwise regression determined independent significant non-genetic correlates of ABI and PAD. Genomewide association and linkage analyses were adjusted for age, sex, s

Understanding mental health among university students in Kenya: what role do family support and age play?

OBJECTIVE: While mental health conditions play a significant role in the global disease burden, their determinants and predictors are still not well understood in Kenya. This study examined the prevalence of mental health conditions among university students and the factors associated with them. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 1,424 students at Pwani University in Kenya, assessing anxiety, depression, and psychosis, using validated screening tools: the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Psychosis Screening Questionnaire (PSQ). Postpartum family planning among women attending maternal and child health centers in Assiut Governorate, Upper Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum family planning (PPFP) is important in helping couples to achieve their reproductive intentions. National surveys have consistently reported higher fertility, lower use of family planning (FP), and higher unmet needs for FP in Upper Egypt. This study aims to identify the factors associated with the use of PPFP in Assiut Governorate, Upper Egypt, and to assess the current status of integration of PPFP counseling in the existing maternal and child health services (MCH). METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional study design, collecting data from 455 postpartum women a

"Speak from a place of love": The family dynamics surrounding Black father-daughter sexual health communication.

INTRODUCTION: Parent-child sexual health communication reduces sexual risk behaviors among youth, which in turn lowers the transmission rate of HIV and sexually transmitted infections. Despite being a known protective factor, gender differences persist with mothers being more likely to discuss sexual health with their children than fathers. Although individual characteristics, interpersonal familial factors and societal norms (e.g., communication self-efficacy, parent-child closeness, and cultural and gender norms) are associated with Black parents' likelihood to communicate about sex with the

Improving Hepatitis B Screening at Family Health Centers Using Quality Improvement and Electronic Medical Record Tools.

Chronic hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection is associated with significant morbidity and mortality with endemic areas carrying most of the global burden of HBV disease. Current HBV screening rates in the United States are suboptimal. We aimed to improve HBV screening rates at regional family health centers serving high-risk refugee populations by 20% over 2 years. We used quality improvement (QI) methodology and implemented interventions providing electronic medical record (EMR)-enabled HBV screening tools within known clinical workflows. EMR tools captured country-of-origin data to identify per…

Readiness of Soldiers and Adult Family Members Who Receive Behavioral Health Care: Identifying Promising Outcome Metrics.

Behavioral health (BH) conditions-such as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety-are the second most common medical reasons for nondeployability in the U.S. Army. The authors of this report aimed to identify promising metrics to assess readiness among soldiers and adult family members who receive BH care. These metrics would expand the Army's outcome monitoring, which currently includes symptom improvement metrics, for patients who received BH care. The authors developed rigorous criteria to evaluate candidate readiness metrics, conducted interviews with stakeholders (Army subj

Family Interventions to improve mental, emotional, and behavioral health outcomes among Latinx youth: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The Latinx population is the largest and fastest-growing segment of the U.S. While the vast majority of Latinx children are U.S.-born, over half are growing up in a family where they live with at least one foreign-born parent. Despite research showing that Latinx immigrants are less likely to experience mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) health issues (e.g., depression, conduct disorder, substance misuse), their children have one of the country's highest rates of MEB disorders. To address the MEB health of Latinx children and their caregivers, culturally grounded interventions
