Experiences of work continuity among cancer survivors who are self-employed farmers.

OBJECTIVE: There exist many reports regarding employed cancer survivors continuing to work; however, studies regarding self-employed cancer survivors-especially farmers-are scarce. This study aims to determine how cancer survivors in agriculture cope with professional requirements and the concomitant challenges. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive qualitative study with eight cancer survivors, who were self-employed farmers, using semi-structured interviews. We followed Braun and Clarke's method for thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three themes emerged related to work continuity for cancer surviv…

One Health Disparities and Blastocystis infection among smallholder farmers in northeastern Madagascar.

Blastocystis is a globally transmitted gastrointestinal protozoa that commonly infects people living in low- and middle-income countries. Transmission is thought to occur via consumption of contaminated water or food and through contact with infected animals, although the specific factors that influence infection in low-resource, rural settings remain unclear. We applied a One Health Disparities framework that considers the interconnectedness of human, nonhuman animal, and environmental health to investigate disparities in Blastocystis spp. infection in rural northeastern Madagascar. We focuse

Alberta dairy farmers' and veterinarians' opinion about bovine leukemia virus control measures.

A high herd and within-herd prevalence of Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) infections in the dairy herds of North America and the negative effects thereof caused the Alberta dairy industry to initiate the development of an on farm BLV control program. Because BLV control is dependent on the commitment of the farmer, potential barriers were identified and farmers' and veterinarians' points of view toward different control options were investigated to inform how the control program might be adjusted. Conversations with these stakeholders were sought and four focus groups with farmers and eleven inter…

My pigs are ok, why change? - animal welfare accounts of pig farmers.

Intensive pig production systems are a source of stress, which is linked to reduced animal welfare and increased antimicrobial use. As the gatekeepers of the welfare of the animals under their care, farmers are seen as the stakeholder responsible for improving animal welfare. The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge and attitudes of pig farmers towards pig welfare and the impact of such attitudes on farmers' selection of management strategies on the farm. We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 44 pig farmers in one of the main pig producing regions of Brazil. Interview…

Depression, Anxiety and Stress Among Young Farmers and Ranchers: A Pilot Study.

Agriculture has been identified as a stressful industry and there is evidence that chronic stress may contribute to the development or progression of mental health disorders, specifically anxiety and depression. Young adult farmers and ranchers may be at increased risk of mental health disorders when compared to more experienced counterparts due to additional stressors. The objectives of this study were to identify the occupational stressors of young adult farmers and ranchers in the Midwest and estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression among this population. An online survey consistin…

The demographic and adaptive history of central African hunter-gatherers and farmers.

Central Africa, a forested region that supports an exceptionally high biodiversity, hosts the world's largest group of hunter-gatherers, who live in close proximity with groups that have adopted agriculture over the past 5000 years. Our understanding of the prehistory of these populations has been dramatically hampered by the almost total absence of fossil remains in this region, a limitation that has recently been circumvented by population genomics approaches. Different studies have estimated that ancestors of rainforest hunter-gatherers and Bantu-speaking farmers separated more than 60 000 …

Social amoeba farmers carry defensive symbionts to protect and privatize their crops.

Agricultural crops are investments that can be exploited by others. Farmer clones of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum carry bacteria to seed out new food populations but they also carry other non-food bacteria such as Burkholderia spp. Here we demonstrate that these farmer-carried Burkholderia inhibit the growth of non-farmer D. discoideum clones that could exploit the farmers' crops. Using supernatants, we show that inhibition is due to molecules secreted by Burkholderia. When farmer and non-farmer amoebae are mixed together at various frequencies and allowed to complete the social …

Antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus strains acquired by pig farmers from pigs.

Carriage of animal-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clonal complex 398 (CC398) is common among pig farmers. This study was conducted (i) to investigate whether pig farmers are colonized with pig-specific S. aureus genotypes other than CC398 and (ii) to survey antimicrobial resistance of S. aureus isolates from pigs and pig farmers. Forty-eight S. aureus isolates from pig farmers and veterinarians and 130 isolates from pigs collected in Western Switzerland were genotyped by spa typing and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Antimicrobial resistance profil…
