A real-time PCR approach to identify anthelmintic-resistant nematodes in sheep farms.

Resistance to fenbendazole, ivermectin, and moxidectin was explored by a fecal egg count reduction test in four meat sheep flocks in southwestern France where anthelmintic resistance was suspected. The FECR test results of the present study confirmed the presence of benzimidazole resistance in three out of the four farms and the presence of ivermectin resistance in one flock. In addition, a suspicion of moxidectin resistance was shown in this latter farm. Both conventional morphological and molecular identifications were performed on larval cultures before and after the treatment in the studie…

Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle at South Korean national breeding stock farms.

This is the first study to evaluate the serologic and molecular prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle at national breeding stock farms in South Korea. These government farms have well-organized biosecurity and management systems to prevent livestock diseases. Of the 736 cattle in this study, 77 tested positive for antibodies against C. burnetii antigens (10.5%, 95% CI: 8.3-12.7) and 11 were positive for a C. burnetti infection on PCR analysis (1.5%, 95% CI: 0.6-2.4). Since the 16S rRNA sequences of C. burnetii from all 11 PCR-positive samples were identical, three representative samples (C…

Ecological study on antimicrobial-resistant zoonotic bacteria transmitted by flies in cattle farms.

Flies were qualitatively and quantitatively monitored on both livestock animals and the surrounding environment to investigate their role as a potential carrier for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria of zoonotic importance in cattle farms. This was done by the use of visual observations and animal photography; meanwhile, in the surrounding environment, flies were collected using sticky cards and then microscopically identified. Representative fly samples were cultured for bacterial isolation, biochemical identification, and then tested against common 12 antibiotics. The total average of dipterou…

The relation between input-output transformation and gastrointestinal nematode infections on dairy farms.

Efficiency analysis is used for assessing links between technical efficiency (TE) of livestock farms and animal diseases. However, previous studies often do not make the link with the allocation of inputs and mainly present average effects that ignore the often huge differences among farms. In this paper, we studied the relationship between exposure to gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infections, the TE and the input allocation on dairy farms. Although the traditional cost allocative efficiency (CAE) indicator adequately measures how a given input allocation differs from the cost-minimising inpu…

Estimation of infection of internal parasites in horses from different type of farms.

Studies were carried out in year 2014 during the pasture period (from April to October) in Warmia and Mazury Region. Fecal samples were taken from cold- and warmblood horses from individual and agrotouristic farms with the different housing, feeding and pasture- care practices. Total of 512 horses were examined (320 mares, 170 geldings and 22 stallions). In the group of 185 horses from individual farms, 119 animals (64.3%) were infected with gastro-intestinal parasites. Among the 372 horses from agrotouristic farms 169 (51.7%) were infected with parasites. Most of the animals expelled the eggs…

First report of cattle farms with gastrointestinal nematodes resistant to levamisole in Mexico.

The objectives of the present study were: (1) to report the percentage of cattle farms with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) resistant to levamisole in Veracruz, Mexico, (2) to identify the genera of GINs involved in resistance, and (3) to identify factors associated with these resistances. The faecal egg count reduction test (McMaster technique) was used to detect the presence of resistant GINs. A questionnaire was given to owners to understand the history of anthelmintic use. The percentage of cattle farms with GINs resistant to levamisole was 36.4% (4/11). The percentage of faecal egg coun…

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus resistant to acaricides and ivermectin in cattle farms of Mexico.

Ticks and the diseases they transmit cause great economic losses to livestock in tropical countries. Non-chemical control alternatives include the use of resistant cattle breeds, biological control and vaccines. However, the most widely used method is the application of different chemical classes of acaricides and macrocyclic lactones. Populations of the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, resistant to organophosphates (OP), synthetic pyrethroids (SP), amitraz and fipronil have been reported in Mexico. Macrocyclic lactones are the most sold antiparasitic drug in the Mexican veter

Fifteen years later, anthelmintic resistances have dramatically spread over goat farms in Guadeloupe.

Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) were performed on 21 goat farms in Guadeloupe (FWI). Anthelmintic resistance (AR) to netobimin (benzimidazole) was found in all 15 herds in which it was tested. AR to ivermectin (avermectin) and levamisole (imidazothiazole) were also very largely spread (14 out of 17 farms and 7 out of 9 farms, respectively). AR to the final moxidectin (milbemycin) released was already present in 2 out of 9 farms in which it was tested. Haemonchus was the dominant genus of gastrointestinal nematodes and was more frequently found to be resistant to netobimin, ivermectin…

A telephone survey of internal parasite control practices on sheep farms in Spain.

A telephone survey of farmers was conducted to determine current internal parasite control practices on sheep farms in Spain; the farmers were interviewed by their veterinarians. Anthelmintic choice was largely on veterinary advice and dominated by benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones. Anthelmintic rotation was separated into: no rotation (42% of farms); annual rotation (36%); rotate within year (20%); and rotate every second year (2%). The mean annual number of treatments varied subtly by region; ewes and rams 1.6-2.1, replacement lambs 1.7-2.1. Anthelmintics are administered primarily dur…

Anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms: update of the situation in the American continent.

The present paper reviews the frequency of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms in different countries of the American continent and describes some aspects that might influence the trend in sheep farms. The situation of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms has been explored mainly in south of the continent (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) where sheep farming is an important industry. In those three countries, as well as in Paraguay, the first comprehensive surveys of anthelmintic resistance were performed among countries in the continent, which showed evidence of high frequency of sheep far…

Rates and determinants of antimicrobial use, including extra-label, on Ontario sheep farms.

Few antimicrobials are licensed for use in sheep in Canada, and the range of indications is narrow. Treatment in an "extra-label" manner may be ineffective. In addition, potentially harmful drug residues in food-animal products and antimicrobial resistance in bacteria may be associated with extra-label drug use (ELDU). No data had been documented on drug use, specifically antimicrobial use (AMU), in Ontario sheep, although it was thought that much use was extra-label. This study investigated AMU and ELDU on 49 lamb-producing Ontario sheep farms. Data were prospectively collected over 12 months…

Tetracycline resistance genes persist at aquaculture farms in the absence of selection pressure.

The prophylactic and therapeutic use of tetracyclines in aquaculture has been shown to contribute to the spread of tetracycline resistance in the environment. In this work, the prevalence of four different tetracycline-resistance genes, tetA, tetC, tetH, and tetM, in sediments from four aquaculture farms and their surroundings in the Baltic Sea was monitored by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The presence of three additional tetracycline-resistance genes (tetE, tetG, and tetW) was studied qualitatively by standard PCR, and the amount of bioavailable tetracyclines and total amoun…

Antimicrobial resistance in generic fecal Escherichia coli from 29 beef farms in Ontario.

The occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in generic Escherichia coli can serve as an indicator of the pool of resistance genes potentially available for transfer to pathogenic organisms. This study was conducted on 29 volunteer beef farms in Ontario to describe the prevalence and patterns of antimicrobial resistance in E. coli, and to describe changes in the prevalence of resistance during the feedlot stage of production. From the pooled fecal samples on 28 of the 29 farms, 31% of isolates from feedlots (n = 993) and 12% of isolates from cow-calf farms (n = 807) were resistant to one or more…

Chlamydial infections in duck farms associated with human cases of psittacosis in France.

Five severe cases of psittacosis in individuals associated with duck farms were notified in France between January and March 2006. Diagnostic examination included serology and/or molecular detection by PCR from respiratory samples. As a consequence, we investigated all duck flocks (n=11) that were housed in the three farms where human infections occurred. While serology by complement fixation test was negative for all samples, cloacal and/or tracheal chlamydial excretion was detected by PCR in all three units. Notably, one duck flock was tested strongly positive in 2 of the 3 affected farms, a…

[Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in cows, clinical and lab review at four farms].

After several reports to the GD (Dutch Animal Health Service) from practitioners in The Netherlands concerning serious Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in dairy herds during summer and autumn 2003, the GD has carried out a pilot-study to determine the most responsible agent. This pilot was thought to be important because of the painfulness of the illness and problems like, (for the farmer) an intensive and difficult therapy. Also the report of a Chlamydophilae infection causing IBK in a dairy herd in the UK prompted to this study. The most frequently isolated infectious agent in ou

Airborne microflora in Quebec dairy farms: lack of effect of bacterial hay preservatives.

Pediococcus pentosaceus is a lactic-acid producing bacterium inoculated in hay to prevent hay deterioration. This study sought to verify the effect of this treatment on the barn microenvironment. Air samples were obtained from 19 barns using bacterial hay treatment and from 18 control barns with six-stage Andersen samplers and all-glass impingers. Appropriate culture media were used for the recovery and identification of microorganisms. Endotoxins were measured with chromogenic Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay. Median values (respectively for treated and untreated hay barns) were: 5.28 x 10(5)

Prevalence of antibodies to different Leptospira interrogans serovars in pigs on large farms.

A seroepidemiological survey was carried out in the province of Badajoz (south-western Spain) in order to determine the presence and spread of Leptospira interrogans. The 521 sera tested were drawn from breeding sows on 28 large farms (15 with fewer than 60 and 13 with over 60 breeders). Immunological testing was performed using the Martin-Pettit micro-agglutination technique. Pigs with titres equal to or greater than 1:100 were considered positive. Haemolysed and/or contaminated test sera were reprocessed following filter-paper treatment. A total of 10.56% of pigs tested proved positive, 39.2…

Concurrent infections of Giardia and Cryptosporidium on two Ohio farms with calf diarrhea.

Giardia and Cryptosporidium infections were diagnosed by immunofluorescence assay on two Ohio dairy farms with calf diarrhea problems. On the first farm, all nine diarrheic calves sampled once in June had Giardia cysts in their feces. On the second farm, all five diarrheic calves examined at the beginning of the diarrhea outbreak in March had Giardia infection. When resampled, the overall infection rate of normal and diarrheic calves was 82.4% in April, and 40.0% in August after the diarrhea subsided. Positive calves ranged from 11 to 164 days of age, and 22.2% of them were as young as 1 to 3 …

Causes of mortality in impala (Aepyceros melampus) on 20 game farms in Zimbabwe.

The most common cause of death in impala (Aepyceros melampus) herds on 20 game farms in Zimbabwe was stress or physical injury during capture. Acute fascioliasis due to Fasciola gigantica was identified as the main disease problem associated with smaller game farms and where impala had been recently introduced. Losses associated with ticks and tick-borne diseases were rare. Impala in Zimbabwe are maintained in a healthy condition on game farms where they are given supplementary feed during the dry winter.
