PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and pathologic features of a case of epibulbar proliferative fasciitis and to compare it with other focal or diffuse myxoid lesions.
METHODS: A clinical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical analysis was performed. The clinical history, photographic documentation, history, and referred slides were reanalyzed. Additional immunohistochemical stains were performed at our institution.
RESULTS: A 68-year-old woman developed over a week a brightly vascularized and focally hemorrhagic placoid lesion on the temporal side of the OS. She had had earlier augmentati…

Immune suppression is a recognized risk factor for necrotizing fasciitis. In patients with hematological malignancies, a profoundly immunocompromised group, the predominant causative organisms are Gram negative. Clinical presentation and outcomes in these patients are similar to the immunocompetent. The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis score is not reliable for risk stratification of the disease.

BACKGROUND: The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score has been verified as a useful diagnostic tool for detecting necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Its application, however, is mainly for NF types I and II. The practical relevance of the LRINEC score for Vibro vulnificus-related skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) was hardly ever investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of the LRINEC scoring system and to identify NF-predicting factors in patients with V. vulnificus-caused SSTI.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, enrolling 125 con…

Pulmonary tumors in young individuals may differ in their causes from older individuals, with a more broad and potentially benign process in the differential diagnosis. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are well described in the literature, and here, we describe a rare previously unreported case of nodular fasciitis of the bronchial tree, initially mimicking a typical IMT, and which spontaneously regressed, avoiding the need for potentially life-altering surgery for the patient. This case highlights the importance of careful evaluation of pseudotumors of the lung and specialist multid…

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcus causes a variety of human infections, including the life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis, which may be ignored by the patient. From hours to days, the infection may progress from an apparently benign skin lesion, usually mistaken for a spider or insect bite, to a highly lethal disease. We present a case of 57-year-old male with skin lesions on swelling left upper limb.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The culture of secretion from epidermis and blood were positive for Group A Streptococcus (GAS), type β hemolytic streptococcus. Intensive anti-infection therapy was appl…

A 36-year-old man with ulcerative colitis presented with bloody stools at the beginning of October 2020. His condition had been stable witho … dilated and the vein walls and their surrounding areas strongly contrasted, suggestive of localized fasciitis. No abnormalities were found on biopsy of his right gastrocnemius muscle on the 5th day after admission. Two days after the muscle biopsy, the patient began experiencing swelling and pain in his left lower leg. The high intensity lesions in his righ …

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection that habitually originates from the fascial sheaths, expands at a volant pace, leads to extensive necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues, and eventually ends up in a life-threatening condition with notably elevated amputation and mortality rates. Factors that induce interruption of skin integrity, such as trauma or intravenous drug use, are the most common inciting events. Specific clinical signs heralding its presence are usually absent in the early stages, often resulting in misdiagnosis. Early recognition, prompt and aggressive surgical debride…

Photobacterium damsela is a gram-negative bacterium that is known to cause infection, most commonly in marine animals and rarely in humans. Photobacterium damsela typically results in skin and soft tissue infections in humans and has been associated with necrotizing fasciitis in several case reports. After an initially benign presentation, P damsela necrotizing fasciitis often progresses rapidly to multiorgan failure and death. Here, we present a fatal case of P damsela necrotizing fasciitis after a minor cut while scaling a fish with a discussion of current literature and treatment strategies…

Necrotizing Fasciitis is a rare life-threatening infection , usually polymicrobial, that frequently affects the extremities in as many as two thirds of the cases. It typically involves primarily the muscular fascia, and then spreads through muscular and subcutaneous tissues. The early diagnosis may be challenging , and appears to be crucial in the management of this condition. We report a case of a 45-year-old man, former drug abuser, diabetic, HCV +, who developed a necrotizing fasciitis of the hand following a minor trauma. Early diagnosis based on clinical, laboratory (LRINEC score) and ra…

Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant infection of the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues characterized by progressive soft tissue necrosis and high mortality. It rarely occurs in the head and neck area. The clinical picture includes non-specific but typical local and systemic symptoms. The treatment is a complex, multidisciplinary task which includes radical surgical exploration, debridement and drainage, empirically started and then targeted intravenous antibiotics and supportive therapy. Authors report a case of necrotizing fasciitis localized on the right side of the face which …
