Observed Mother- and Father-Child Interaction Differences in Families with Medically Assisted Reproduction-Conceived Twins and Singletons.

Increased medically assisted reproduction (MAR) use to treat infertility has resulted in a growing twin birth rate. Little is known about parent-child relationships for twin relative to singleton children in middle childhood. This study fills this gap by examining parent-child relationships in 57 families with eighty 6- to 12-year-old MAR twin and singleton children using observational data (warm and supportive communication, control, and hostility). Nested ANCOVAs indicate that while mothers exhibit similar interactional behaviors toward twins and singletons, fathers have less optimum behavio

Children of alcoholic parents: health, growth, mental development and psychopathology until school age. Results from a prospective longitudinal study of children from the general population.

Of 640 women who paid their first visit to the two maternal welfare centres in a new Stockholm suburb during one prospective year, 532 (85%) were interviewed with regard to 41 stress factors forming a "life stress score" (LSS). The interviews were supplemented with data from hospital, social welfare and police records concerning the expectant mother and the father. The 532 mothers were divided into three groups according to the degree of psychosocial stress (group 1 (n = 194) without psychosocial stress; group 2 (n = 171) with severe psychosocial stress; and group 3 (n = 167) in an intermediat

Families created by the new reproductive technologies: quality of parenting and social and emotional development of the children.

The creation of families by means of the new reproductive technologies has raised important questions about the psychological consequences for children, particularly where gamete donation has been used in the child's conception. Findings are presented of a study of family relationships and the social and emotional development of children in families created as a result of the 2 most widely used reproductive technologies, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor insemination (DI), in comparison with control groups of families with a naturally conceived child and adoptive families. The quality of

The Response of the Infant to the Father's Voice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: The formation of the family is interrupted following a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission, and fathers report experiencing delayed infant bonding due to unit barriers and separation. Fathers state comfort with early infant bonding through language, fearing physical contact with the sick newborn. During hospitalization, active engagement supports ongoing infant/parent vocalization and infant stabilization. PURPOSE: This prospective descriptive pilot study explored the infant's physiological response to the father's voice during a live reading activity. METHODS: After In

"It's because We are 'Loose Girls' That's why We had Children with MINUSTAH Soldiers": A Qualitative Analysis of Stigma Experienced by Peacekeeper-Fathered Children and Their Mothers in Haiti.

Sexual abuse and exploitation (SEA) perpetrated by UN peacekeepers while on mission is a violation of human rights and undermines the goal of upholding human rights in countries that host peacekeeping missions. In addition to survivors, children fathered by peacekeepers are also victims of SEA that need protection. Stigma poses negative life course consequences for SEA survivors and their peacekeeper-fathered children. However, there is a considerable lack of empirical research concerning the stigma experiences of SEA survivors and their children in post-colonial contexts. The present study ad

The influences of parental divorce and maternal-versus-paternal alcohol abuse on offspring lifetime suicide attempt.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Research indicates that parental divorce and parental alcohol abuse independently increase likelihood of offspring lifetime suicide attempt. However, when experienced together, only parental alcohol abuse significantly increased odds of suicide attempt. It is unclear to what extent differences in the effect of maternal versus paternal alcohol use exist on adult offspring lifetime suicide attempt risk. This study examined the influences of parental divorce and maternal-paternal histories of alcohol problems on adult offspring lifetime suicide attempt. DESIGN AND METHODS:

Minimum acceptable diet and its associated factors among children aged 6-23months in rural households of South Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Optimal nutrition throughout the first 1,000 days is critical for a child's development, but malnutrition remains a major issue in Ethiopia. The Minimum Acceptable Diet (MAD) is an important indication of nutritional quality in children aged 6-23 months, although its prevalence and determinants vary significantly across the country. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of MAD and its related characteristics in Southern Ethiopia's rural Gamo Zone, to guide targeted local interventions. METHODS: From July to September 2023, a community-based, cross-sectional stu

Construction of Fatherhood Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged and Predominantly Black Fathers: A Grounded Theory Study.

This grounded theory study examines how socioeconomically disadvantaged and predominantly Black fathers construct fatherhood identity amid systemic adversity. Drawing on 11 focus groups with 40 fathers enrolled in a U.S. Midwestern fatherhood program, the study explores the multidimensional nature of fatherhood and the ways in which structural, interpersonal, and identity-based factors shape paternal engagement. Using iterative coding and comparative analysis, findings reveal three central themes: (a) evolving dimensions of engaged fatherhood that transcend biological ties and traditional patr

Familial rectal pain: a familial autonomic disorder as a cause of paroxysmal attacks in the newborn baby.

A 2-day-old baby exhibited impressive paroxysmal attacks consisting of bradycardia, bronchospasm and vasomotor fits (Harlequin type) related to a rare, dominantly inherited form of dysautonomy called "familial rectal pain". These events were recurrently triggered by emotion, diaper changes or wiping of the perineal areas or eating. Sometimes they occurred spontaneously. Carbamazepine had an excellent effect on the fainting. At four years of age, the child had normal psychomotor development with only minimal symptoms, and very rare paroxysmal attacks. The father of the child has minimal symptom

Postpartum psychiatric disorders.

This review summarises the psychiatry of the puerperium, in the light of publications during the past 5 years. A wide variety of disorders are seen. Recognition of disorders of the mother-infant relationship is important, because these have pernicious long-term effects but generally respond to treatment. Psychoses complicate about one in 1000 deliveries. The most common is related to manic depression, in which neuroleptic drugs should be used with caution. Post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessions of child harm, and a range of anxiety disorders all require specific psychological treatments. P

[The invisible children--when mother or father have schizophrenia].

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness with a profound negative influence on social functioning. How does a schizophrenic disorder in parents influence their rearing of their children? MATERIAL AND METHOD: An extensive literature search in Medline and PsycInfo. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: For children with other available carers, an acute psychosis in one parent may lead to a crisis reaction. Here relatively simple interventions can be helpful. In the case of severe and longstanding illness in a parent, the child may get a heavy burden. The illness may seriously interfere with

The Laboratory Parenting Assessment Battery: development and preliminary validation of an observational parenting rating system.

Investigations of contributors to and consequences of the parent-child relationship require accurate assessment of the nature and quality of parenting. The present study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the Laboratory Parenting Assessment Battery (Lab-PAB), an observational rating system that assesses parenting behaviors during the early childhood years. Dyadic parent-child interaction was assessed observationally in a community sample of 154 families (154 mothers, 154 fathers, 154 biological children 3-6 years old). Parenting behaviors were rated with a comprehensive c

Quality of life in mothers and fathers of children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) has a high survival rate, but treatment is lengthy with risk of severe side-effects, which may also impact parents' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We present data on 526 parents of 310 children treated for ALL according to the NOPHO ALL2008-protocol, in Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Parents were asked to complete the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) at least 6 months after end of treatment and data were compared with Norwegian reference data. Parental background factors were collected via a study-specific questionnaire. Participating parents scored

Mutation Detection in Activin A Receptor, Type I (ACVR1) Gene in Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva in An Iranian Family.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP, MIM 135100) is a rare genetic disease that is often inherited sporadically in an autosomal dominant pattern. The disease manifests in early life with malformed great toes and, its episodic and progressive bone formation in skeletal muscle after trauma is led to extra-articular ankylosis. In this study, a 17 year-old affected girl born to a father with chemical injury due to exposure to Mustard gas during the Iran-Iraq war, and her first degree relatives were examined to find the genetic cause of the disease. The mutation c.617G>A in the Activin A rec

Paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors: A meta-analysis.

Although there is a consensus that maternal depression is strongly related to child externalizing behaviors, research on the association between paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors is mixed. Some research shows that paternal depressive symptoms are positively associated with symptoms of externalizing behaviors, including oppositional-defiant behavior, conduct problems, and overall externalizing behavior, while other studies failed to find an association, or demonstrated a weak or negative association. Given that the most recent meta-analysis on paternal depression and child e
