Effect of treatment with omega-3 fatty acids on C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor-alfa in hemodialysis patients.

C-reactive protein (CRP), a strong independent risk marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-α), a known pro-inflammatory cytokine, are elevated and have damaging effects in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Omega-3 fatty acids play an important modulatory role in inflammatory responses. The aim of this study is to review the alterations in serum levels of TNF-α, CRP and other parameters caused by omega-3 supplementation in dialysis patients. The clinical trial was performed in 37 patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis in hemodialy

Biological mechanism of antidepressant effect of omega-3 fatty acids: how does fish oil act as a 'mind-body interface'?

The unsatisfactory results of monoamine-based antidepressant therapy and the high occurrence of somatic symptoms and physical illness in patients with depression imply that the serotonin hypothesis is insufficient to approach the aetiology of depression. Depressive disorders with somatic presentation are the most common form of depression. Somatization, the bodily symptoms without organic explanation, is similar to cytokine-induced sickness behaviour. Based on recent evidence, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs, or n-3 fatty acids) are enlightening a promising path to discover the

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) as an anti-inflammatory: an alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for discogenic pain.

BACKGROUND: The use of NSAID medications is a well-established effective therapy for both acute and chronic nonspecific neck and back pain. Extreme complications, including gastric ulcers, bleeding, myocardial infarction, and even deaths, are associated with their use. An alternative treatment with fewer side effects that also reduces the inflammatory response and thereby reduces pain is believed to be omega-3 EFAs found in fish oil. We report our experience in a neurosurgical practice using fish oil supplements for pain relief. METHODS: From March to June 2004, 250 patients who had been seen

Fatty acid composition in major depression: decreased omega 3 fractions in cholesteryl esters and increased C20: 4 omega 6/C20:5 omega 3 ratio in cholesteryl esters and phospholipids.

Recently, there were some reports that major depression may be accompanied by alterations in serum total cholesterol, cholesterol ester and omega 3 essential fatty acid levels and by an increased C20: 4 omega 6/C20: 5 omega 3, i.e., arachidonic acid/eicosapentaenoic, ratio. The present study aimed to examine fatty acid composition of serum cholesteryl esters and phospholipids in 36 major depressed, 14 minor depressed and 24 normal subjects. Individual saturated (e.g., C14:0; C16:0, C18:0) and unsaturated (e.g., C18:1, C18:2, C20:4) fatty acids in phospholipid and cholesteryl ester fractions we

Omega-3 fatty acids mitigate methamphetamine-induced pulmonary oxidative stress, antioxidant depletion, neutrophilic inflammation, caspase-3 apoptosis, and bioenergetic dysfunction in male Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) is a widely misused psychostimulant whose pulmonary toxicity is poorly characterised. Omega-3 fatty acids (Omega-3 FAs) are nutritional lipids with established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, yet their capacity to protect against METH-induced lung injury has not been studied. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of chronic METH exposure on pulmonary oxidative stress, antioxidant defences, inflammation, apoptosis, and energy metabolism, and to evaluate whether omega-3 FA supplementation attenuates selected markers of METH-induced pulmonary inj

Effect of Omega-3 fatty acids, fibrates and PCSK9 inhibitors on atherosclerotic plaque burden, composition and stability: Insights from imaging.

Atherosclerotic plaque burden, composition, and stability are key determinants of acute cardiovascular events. Serial coronary imaging, including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA), enables mechanistic assessment of pharmacotherapeutic effects on plaque in vivo. This review synthesizes imaging evidence from three drug classes: omega-3 fatty acids, distinguishing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) monotherapy as icosapent ethyl (IPE) from EPA/DHA combinations; fibrates; and PCSK9 inhibitors. EPA monotherapy has been

Valorization of fish oil byproduct methyl esters for omega‑3 polyunsaturated fatty acids production via immobilized CALB lipase‑catalyzed hydrolysis.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) offer therapeutic benefits, including triglyceride reduction and management of cardiovascular and neurological disorders. This study investigates the use of fish oil processing by‑products, which consist mainly of fatty acid methyl and ethyl esters, as novel substrates for n‑3 PUFAs production. To overcome the low efficiency of conventional chemical methods and the vulnerability of free lipase to alcohol toxicity and poor reusability, we developed a stable immobilized lipase system. The target enzyme (CALB) was immobilized onto macroporous resin

Investigating omega-3 fatty acids' neuroprotective effects in repetitive subconcussive neural injury: Study protocol for a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

Soccer (football) is the most popular sport globally, with 265 million players across all ages and sexes. Repetitive subconcussive head impacts due to heading of the soccer ball can pose threats to healthy brain development and aging. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), may have neuroprotective effects, but it remains unclear what aspects of neural health benefit from DHA+EPA when faced with subconcussive head impacts. In a randomized placebo-controlled trial, 208 soccer players will complete baseline measures including demographics, bloo

Allicin and Omega-3 fatty acids attenuates acetaminophen mediated renal toxicity and modulates oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis in rats.

Acetaminophen (APAP), a widely used medication known for its pain-relieving and fever-reducing effects, can cause kidney failure if taken in excess. To investigate the potential protective effects of allicin (ALC) and/or omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) against acetaminophen-induced kidney damage, a study was conducted using 49 rats divided into seven groups. The control group was given saline, while the other groups received ALC, O3FA, APAP, ALC + APAP, O3FA + APAP, or ALC + O3FA + APAP. After administering APAP, the rats showed decreased levels of total protein and albumin in their blood, along wi
