Developmental Ethanol Exposure Causes Reduced Feeding and Reveals a Critical Role for Neuropeptide F in Survival.

Food intake is necessary for survival, and natural reward circuitry has evolved to help ensure that animals ingest sufficient food to maintain development, growth, and survival. Drugs of abuse, including alcohol, co-opt the natural reward circuitry in the brain, and this is a major factor in the reinforcement of drug behaviors leading to addiction. At the junction of these two aspects of reward are alterations in feeding behavior due to alcohol consumption. In particular, developmental alcohol exposure (DAE) results in a collection of physical and neurobehavioral disorders collectively referre…

Maternal, infant, and household factors are associated with breast-feeding trajectories during infants' first 6 months of life in Matlab, Bangladesh.

Women's breast-feeding patterns are complex, and existing definitions of breast-feeding behavior do not capture this complexity adequately. We used results from a prior qualitative study to define trajectories for feeding during the first half of infancy, and then examined household-, maternal-, and infant-level determinants of these trajectories using logistic regression analysis. The 1472 women in the study cohort lived in rural Bangladesh and were participants in the Maternal and Infant Nutrition Intervention in Matlab trial. The 3 infant feeding trajectories included women who fed only bre…

Jejunal morphology and blood metabolites in tail biting, victim and control pigs.

Tail biting has several identified feeding-related risk factors. Tail biters are often said to be lighter and thinner than other pigs in the … eased jejunal villus height and blood AA levels, possibly because of depressed absorption capacity, feeding behavior or environmental stress associated with tail biting. Victim pigs had lower concentrations of AA and Pi in plasma, possibly as a consequence of being bitten.

Associations of toddler mechanical/distress feeding problems with psychopathology symptoms five years later.

BACKGROUND: Feeding problems are common in early childhood, and some evidence suggests that feeding problems may be associated with psychopathology. Few prospective studies have explored whether toddler feeding problems predict later psychopathology. METHODS: Mothers of 1,136 children from the Upstate KIDS cohort study provided data when children were 2.5 and 8 years of age. Food refusal (picky eating) and mechanical/distress feeding problems and developmental delays were assessed at 2.5 years. Child eating behaviors (enjoyment of food, food fussiness, and emotional under and overeating) and

Effects of Irregular Feeding on the Daily Fluctuations in mRNA Expression of the Neurosecretory Protein GL and Neurosecretory Protein GM Genes in the Mouse Hypothalamus.

Circadian desynchrony induced by a long period of irregular feeding leads to metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes mellitus. The recently identified neurosecretory protein GL (NPGL) and neurosecretory protein GM (NPGM) are hypothalamic small proteins that stimulate food intake and fat accumulation in several animals. To clarify the mechanisms that evoke feeding behavior and induce energy metabolism at the appropriate times in accordance with a circadian rhythm, diurnal fluctuations in Npgl and Npgm mRNA expression were investigated in mice. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that…

Functional morphology of the mouthparts of lady beetle Coccinella transversoguttata (Coccinellidae, Coleoptera), with reference to their feeding mechanism.

The lady beetle Coccinella transversoguttata is an important biocontrol agent of aphids. As the main the feeding apparatus, mouthparts play essential roles in feeding process, and the morphological variation of mouthparts is correlated with variation in food source and feeding behavior. To better understand the feeding behavior of C. transversoguttata, we studied the functional morphology of mouthparts, with special attention to the fine morphology of each part of mouthpart and various kinds of sensilla. The mouthpart of C. transversoguttata is typical mandibulate type that composed of labrum,…

Shift of circadian feeding pattern by high-fat diets is coincident with reward deficits in obese mice.

Recent studies provide evidence that high-fat diets (HF) trigger both i) a deficit of reward responses linked to a decrease of mesolimbic dopaminergic activity, and ii) a disorganization of circadian feeding behavior that switch from a structured meal-based schedule to a continuous snacking, even during periods normally devoted to rest. This feeding pattern has been shown to be a cause of HF-induced overweight and obesity. Our hypothesis deals with the eventual link between the rewarding properties of food and the circadian distribution of meals. We have investigated the effect of circadian fe…

Nucleus of the solitary tract regulation of cue-induced appetitive behaviors via midbrain dopamine neurons.

Internal states including stress and satiety, affect cue-induced feeding behaviors, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), a key hindbrain hub that integrates interoceptive and viscerosensory signals and projects to reward processing nuclei, is anatomically well-positioned to modulate cue-induced feeding behaviors in response to internal state changes. Using behavioral paradigms combined with chemogenetics and fibre photometry, this study investigated the hypothesis that NTS mediates the effects of stress and satiety on cue-induc…

Sequential Activation of Lateral Hypothalamic Neuronal Populations during Feeding and Their Assembly by Gamma Oscillations.

Neural circuits supporting innate behaviors, such as feeding, exploration, and social interaction, intermingle in the lateral hypothalamus (LH). Although previous studies have shown that individual LH neurons change their firing relative to the baseline during one or more behaviors, the firing rate dynamics of LH populations within behavioral episodes and the coordination of behavior-related LH populations remain largely unknown. Here, using unsupervised graph-based clustering of LH neurons firing rate dynamics in freely behaving male mice, we identified distinct populations of cells whose act

Neuronal Regulation of Feeding and Energy Metabolism: A Focus on the Hypothalamus and Brainstem.

In the face of constantly changing environments, the central nervous system (CNS) rapidly and accurately calculates the body's needs, regulates feeding behavior, and maintains energy homeostasis. The arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) plays a key role in this process, serving as a critical brain region for detecting nutrition-related hormones and regulating appetite and energy homeostasis. Agouti-related protein (AgRP)/neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons in the ARC are core elements that interact with other brain regions through a complex appetite-regulating network to comprehensively control …

Roles for the gut microbiota in regulating neuronal feeding circuits.

The gut microbiota has the capacity to affect host appetite via intestinal satiety pathways, as well as complex feeding behaviors. In this Review, we highlight recent evidence that the gut microbiota can modulate food preference across model organisms. We discuss effects of the gut microbiota on the vagus nerve and brain regions including the hypothalamus, mesolimbic system, and prefrontal cortex, which play key roles in regulating feeding behavior. Crosstalk between commensal bacteria and the central and peripheral nervous systems is associated with alterations in signaling of neurotransmitte…

A comparison of re-presentation and modified chin prompt to treat different topographies of liquid expulsion.

Treatment of one behavior in the chain of consumption might be associated with the emergence of other problematic behaviors. For example, some children with feeding disorders expel liquid. Moreover, the form in which children expel liquid might vary and influence whether a treatment to reduce liquid expulsion will result in clinically meaningful outcomes. In the current investigation, we first identified topographies of liquid expulsion (e.g., forceful, run out) for each child. We then compared and evaluated the effects of 2 procedures, a modified chin prompt and re-presentation, on the liquid

Sucking patterns in fullterm infants between birth and 10 weeks of age.

OBJECTIVE: Coordinating sucking, swallowing and breathing to achieve effective sucking is a complex process and even though sucking is essential for nutrition, little is known about sucking patterns after birth. Our objective was to study sucking patterns in healthy fullterm infants and to describe the age-specific variations. METHOD: We studied the sucking patterns of 30 healthy, fullterm infants longitudinally from 2 or 3 days after birth to 10 weeks of age. During this time we recorded five to seven feeding episodes that we assessed off-line with the Neonatal Oral-Motor Assessment Scale (N

Oral feeding challenges of infants of diabetic mothers.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of diabetes before or during pregnancy can increase perinatal mortality and morbidities. It is well known an infant of a diabetic mother (IDM) may experience complications such as macrosomia, hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, cardiac anomalies, and other abnormalities of organogenesis. Medical providers including physicians, nurses, and speech therapists have experienced challenges with helping IDMs orally feed. Challenges with oral feeding can lead to prolonged hospital stays and placement of supplemental feeding devices. The etiology of an IDM's oral feedin

Efficacy of statistical process control procedures to identify deviations in continuously measured physiologic and behavioral variables in beef steers experimentally challenged with Mannheimia haemolytica.

The objective of this experiment was to determine if statistical process control (SPC) procedures coupled with the remote continuous collection of feeding behavior patterns, accelerometer-based behaviors, and rumen temperature can accurately differentiate between animals experimentally inoculated with Mannheimia haemolytica (MH) or PBS. Thirty-six crossbred steers (BW = 352 ± 23 kg) seronegative for MH were randomly assigned to bronchoselective endoscopic inoculation with MH (n = 18) or PBS (n = 18). Electronic feed bunks were used to measure DMI and feeding behavior traits, accelerometer-base…

Relationship between body temperature and behavior of nonpregnant early-lactation dairy cows.

Animal behavior and management factors that influence behavior affect physiology and lactation performance. Circadian rhythms of core body temperature are a primary output of the master clock; however, core body temperature in early-lactation dairy cows showed poor fit to 24-h rhythms. We hypothesized that eating behavior was related to daily body temperature oscillations. The objectives of this study were to determine if oscillations in daily behaviors, specifically feeding behavior, were related to body temperature. The behavior of 11 Holstein cows (34 ± 14 d in milk; mean ± standard deviati…

Development of ruminating behavior in Holstein calves between birth and 30 days of age.

Ruminating behavior accompanies the development of the rumen and the intake of solid feed in calves. However, few studies have reported on the emergence and development of rumination. In this study, we observed ruminating behavior changes of 56 Holstein calves (body weight at birth = 40.1 ± 3.96 kg; mean ± standard deviation) from birth to 30 d of age under the feeding management of suckling calves that were only fed pelleted concentrate feed and milk. All calves were housed in individual pens equipped with infrared cameras. We explored feed intake within 30 d of age, body weight on 61 d of ag
