PURPOSE: The ideal treatment of non-united and neglected fracture neck femur in the young adult still remains unclear and is characterized by many biological and biomechanical challenges.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with non-united or neglected fracture neck femur aged between 19 and 50 years were treated by a novel subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy and were followed up for a mean of 26.7 months. Patients were assessed by radiological parameters, the Harris Hip Score, Oxford Knee Score, and Askin Bryan Criteria to categorize the overall outcome of the patients at 24 months. Other outcome meas

Although the menopause has been associated with increased bone loss at several skeletal sites, it has not previously been noted in the hip, yet estrogen therapy has been reported to reduce the incidence of hip fractures. We investigated the effect of age and menopause on bone loss in the proximal femur by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck, Ward's triangle, and trochanter by dual-photon absorptiometry in 263 normal women aged 20-84. Multiple regression analyses revealed a significant decrease in BMD of the femoral neck and Ward's triangle with age in both pre- and postmen

CASE: Pediatric femoral neck fractures are rare injuries usually associated with high-energy trauma. We present a grossly displaced femoral neck fracture in a 7-year-old girl due to a high violence road traffic accident, in which the femoral neck had buttonholed medially into the adductors. The management and clinical and radiological outcomes are discussed with relevant literature.
CONCLUSION: This case is reported for its atypical presentation, in which the metaphysis of the proximal femur completely separated from the capital epiphysis and the greater trochanteric apophysis leaving the pos

THAin the dysplastic hip is a technically demanding procedure that requires careful preoperative planning. The common deformities associated with the dysplastic femur include hypoplasia, excessive neck anteversion, a valgus neck-shaft angle, metaphyseal-diaphyseal mismatch, and a posteriorly displaced greater trochanter. In selected cases, osteotomy of the femur may be performed to correct anteversion and/or avoid excessive leg lengthening and stretch of the sciatic nerve. All of these issues mandate careful preoperative planning. With the advent of modern surgical techniques and implants, the

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have described osteonecrosis of the femoral head after intramedullary nailing of the femur through the piriformis fossa in children. Other reports have raised concerns about the development of femoral neck narrowing and valgus deformity of the proximal part of the femur after intramedullary nailing through the tip of the greater trochanter. We evaluated the radiographic changes in the proximal part of the femur following intramedullary nailing through the lateral trochanteric area at a minimum of two years postoperatively in twenty-five affected extremities. The mean

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the biomechanical characteristics of retinaculum in the treatment of femoral neck fractures.
METHODS: The CT data of a 75-year-old female volunteer was processed by software to construct an intact femur model and femoral neck fracture model fixed with three cannulated screws, which were divided into models with retinaculum or not. The Von-Mises stress distribution and displacement were compared to analyze the stability differences between the different models to study the mechanical characteristics of the retinaculum in the treatment of femoral neck fractures.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the application of computer-aided design and 3D printing technology for percutaneous fixation of femoral neck fractures using cannulated compression screws.
METHODS: Using computed tomography data, an individualized proximal femur model was created with a 3D printer. The reduction of the femoral neck fracture and the placement of the cannulated compression screws were simulated on a computer. A 3D printing guide plate was designed to match the proximal femur. After demonstrating the feasibility of the 3D model before the surgical procedure,

BACKGROUND: Abaloparatide treatment for 12 months led to significant and rapid increases in bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine, total hip, and femoral neck compared with placebo in the phase 3 ATOM study (NCT03512262) in men with osteoporosis.
METHODOLOGY: Acetabular BMD and femur strength were analyzed in separate analyses using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from men in the abaloparatide and placebo groups. First, acetabular BMD was calculated in the DeLee and Charnley zones. Second, DXA scans were processed through 3D-Shaper software to generate three-dimensional

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is caused by disruption of the blood supply to the proximal femur. The alterations in the blood supply may occur following a traumatic event or result from a non-traumatic cause. Femoral neck fracture and hip dislocation and associated surgical procedures, corticosteroid therapy, and alcohol abuse frequently lead to AVN development. Type of fracture (displaced or undisplaced) and time between injury and surgery are the most critical factors in assessing the risk of developing AVN. Diagnosis of AVN can be established based on patients' complaints, me

UNLABELLED: People living with HIV (PLWH) have increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. We assessed the proximal femur of PLWH and age-matched seronegative controls using quantitative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Results suggest that the trabecular compartment is compromised at fracture-prone regions in the proximal femur of PLWH.

Although increasing evidence suggests that abnormal femur geometry in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may contribute to intra-articular damage and the development of hip osteoarthritis, a comprehensive 3D description of femoral abnormalities in DDH remains incomplete. Statistical shape modeling (SSM) was used to quantify three-dimensional (3D) geometric variation among femurs in female patients with DDH and control subjects. SSM correspondence points (n = 8,192) were placed on each femur using a gradient descent energy function to derive mean DDH and control femoral shapes and princip

PURPOSE: To provide a quantitative guide to tunnel placement concurrently through the femur and acetabulum during a ligamentum teres reconstruction, minimizing the risk of injury to the obturator neurovascular bundle.
METHODS: Nine human cadaveric pelvises, complete with femurs (mean age, 59.6 years; age range, 47-65 years), were studied. Before dissection, a 3-dimensional coordinate-measuring device was used to record the neutral orientation of the femur in the acetabulum. The specimens were then dissected free of all extra-articular soft tissue, except for the ligamentum teres and the obtur

Our study surveyed age-related bone mineral density (BMD), bone loss rate, and prevalence of osteoporosis in women at multiple research centers in China. Survey results were used to establish a BMD reference database for the diagnosis of osteoporosis in Chinese women nationwide. We used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry bone densitometers to measure BMD at posteroanterior (PA) lumbar spine (L1-L4; n=8142) and proximal femur (n=7290) in female subjects of age 20-89 yr from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, and Jiaxing. A cubic regression-fitting model was used to describe the chang

INTRODUCTION: The understanding of the stresses and strains and their dependence on loading direction caused by an axial deformity is very important for understanding the mechanism of femural neck fractures. The hypothesis of this study is that lower limb malalignment is correlated with a substantial stress variation on the upper end of the femur. The purpose of this biomechanical trial using the finite element method is to determine the effect of the loading direction on the proximal femur regarding the malalignment of the lower limb, and also enlighten the relation between the lower limb ali

Atypical femur fractures secondary to bisphosphonate use are often complicated by nonunion, which often results in progressive varus collapse, femoral head and neck bone loss, and eventual implant failure. We present a technique that uses orthogonal, dual plating of the proximal femur in addition to biologic augmentation for the management of these challenging fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological fractures of the femoral neck caused by necrosis of the femoral head are extremely rare. Here, we report a rare case of bilateral femoral head osteonecrosis extending to the femoral neck, with bilateral pathological fractures of the femoral neck occurring within a short period of time.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old male with a 25-year history of daily consumption of 750 ml of liquor, presented with right hip pain after labor for 1 month. He subsequently sustained a right femoral neck fracture without trauma and underwent a right total hip arthroplasty. Two months later
