Pregnant albino rats were placed on a complete liquid diet (Ensure) containing either 9% ethanol or an isocaloric amount of sucrose between the third and twentieth day of gestation. The pups born to these rats were sacrificed either day 11 or day 14 postnatum and morphometrical, histological and biochemical analyses were done on their cerebellums and cerebrums. Pups that were exposed to ethanol in utero had significantly smaller body weights, cerebrums and cerebellums than pair-fed controls. The cerebellar mass was reduced by 10% and the cerebral weight by 3% in the pups exposed to alcohol whe

Gestation represents a critical developmental window of fetal vulnerability to xenobiotic-induced disruptions of biological homeostasis. While xenobiotic transfer is primarily studied through maternal-fetal comparisons at delivery, its spatiotemporal distribution across gestation stages, particularly the transport mechanisms in early pregnancy, remains poorly understood. In this study, we reveal spatiotemporal heterogeneity of hydrophobic toxicants (including persistent organic pollutants such as medium-chain chlorinated paraffins [MCCPs] and hexabromocyclododecane) and endogenous metabolites

The prenatal period is a critical window for cardiovascular development in offspring. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that maternal nutritional imbalances during pregnancy-encompassing undernutrition, overnutrition, and specific nutrient deficiencies-elicit adverse adaptations in fetal vascular systems, thereby predisposing offspring to cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the impact of macronutrient (e.g., high-sugar, high-fat diets) and micronutrient (e.g., vitamin D, folate) imbalances, as well as exposures to alcohol and caffeine, on o

BACKGROUND: Fetal congenital heart defects (CHD) are related to fetal growth restriction, pregnancy complications and placental abnormalities. We hypothesize that abnormal placental development in fetal CHD is not solely associated to the altered fetal circulation, but is also related to abnormalities in developmental pathways.
OBJECTIVES: To assess placenta and umbilical cord histology in pregnancies with fetal CHD and relate this to cardiac development and fetal oxygenation and flow.
STUDY DESIGN: Placental tissue from pregnancies with fetal CHD (n = 111) and healthy controls (n = 80) was

Maternal-fetal microchimerism is a fascinating phenomenon in which maternal cells migrate to the tissues of the offspring during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. These cells primarily consist of leukocytes and stem cells. Remarkably, these maternal cells possess functional potential in the offspring and play a significant role in shaping their immune system development. T lymphocytes, a cell population mainly found in various tissues of the offspring, have been identified as the major cell type derived from maternal microchimerism. These T lymphocytes not only exert effector functions but als

One of the most recognizable cases of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is X-linked diseases. Diagnosis of fetal sex is essential for couples who are known to be at risk of some X-linked disorders. The objective of this study was to discriminate between female (XX) and male (XY) embryos by detecting sex chromosomes-specific sequences in spent culture medium and comparing these results to PGD/CGH array results. It may open new window for the development of a non-invasive PGD method. 120 Embryo's spent media from Day 3 and Day 5 embryos were collected. Modified phenol-chloroform solution wa

We also discuss how maternal diet and stress influences fetal development and metabolism and how fetal growth restriction can result in susceptibility to developing chronic disease later in life. Finally, we speculate how interventions targeting placental function may offer unprecedented opportunities to prevent cardiomet …

Studies suggest that gestational exposure to lead (Pb) is related to spontaneous abortions, preterm birth, lower infant birth weight and length, and neurological dysfunctions. However, the evidence about its effects during pregnancy exposure on fetal and child development is still poor. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to verify the association between prenatal exposure to Pb and the occurrence of neurobehavioral deficits, miscarriages, and child mortality. Observational studies with pregnant women exposed to Pb during pregnancy were included, without gender or ethnicity restriction

OBJECTIVES: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) may alter brain development permanently, resulting in lifelong structural and functional changes. However, in studies addressing this research question, FGR singletons have been compared primarily to matched appropriately grown singletons, a design which is inherently biased by differences in genetic and maternal factors. To overcome these limitations, we conducted a within-pair comparison of neonatal structural cerebral ultrasound measurements in monochorionic twin pairs with selective FGR (sFGR).
METHODS: Structural cerebral measurements on neonata

AIM: Frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) has gained popularity as an assistive reproductive technology despite its increased risk of large-for-gestational-age offspring. This study aimed to analyze the effect of FET on fetal development, particularly the growth rate and estimated fetal weight (EFW) throughout pregnancy.
METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective study that examined 97 patients with FET conception and 477 patients with natural conception (NC) who underwent labor and delivery at our clinic between December 2015 and June 2019. Crown-rump length (CRL) in the first trimester…

Vaccines have been developed at "warp speed" to combat the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Although they are considered the best approach for preventing mortality, when assessing the safety of these vaccines, pregnant women have not been included in clinical trials. Thus, vaccine safety for this demographic, as well as for the developing fetus and neonate, remains to be determined. A global effort has been underway to encourage pregnant women to get vaccinated despite the uncertain risk posed to them and their offspring. Given this, post-hoc data collection, potentially

BACKGROUND: Impaired in utero fetal growth trajectory may have long term health consequences of the newborns and increase risk of adulthood metabolic diseases. Prenatal exposure to air pollution has been linked to fetal development restriction; however, the impact of exposure to ambient air pollutants on the entire course of intrauterine fetal development has not been comprehensively investigated.
METHODS: During 2015-2018, two cohorts of mother-infant dyads (N = 678 and 227) were recruited in Shanghai China, from which three categories of data were systematically collected: (1) daily exposur…
