Identification of NTRK3 fusions in plaque-like CD34-positive dermal fibroma.

AIMS: Plaque-like CD34-positive dermal fibroma (PDF), previously termed medallion-like dermal dendrocyte hamartoma, is a rare CD34-positive superficial spindle cell fibroblastic tumour that may closely mimic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Recent studies have identified recurrent kinase gene fusions in a subset of congenital and paediatric CD34-positive plaque-like superficial spindle cell tumours with overlapping clinicopathologic features, highlighting an emerging molecular framework for this group. However, the molecular spectrum of lesions meeting classic histopathologic criteria for PDF …

Rabbit Fibroma Virus infection in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Mexico.

Rabbit Fibroma is a Leporipoxviral disease and is considered the third most common cutaneous neoplasm in pet rabbits. Two domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were submitted to the veterinary clinic due to the presence of a nodule on the lip. Histologically, epithelial cells of the epidermis and hair follicles showed mild to moderate ballooning degeneration, spongiosis, and several eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The dermis was expanded by atypical spindle cells that also showed eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The tissues were evaluated by using transmission…

Multiple Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma: A Sign of Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumour Syndrome.

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour (HPT-JT) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disease. It is caused by a gene mutation of the tumour suppressor gene CDC73 that encodes for parafibromin. This syndrome predisposes to a triad occurrence of multiple maxillary or mandibular cemento-ossifying fibroma, parathyroid adenoma or carcinoma, and renal and uterine tumours. In this study, we report a case of HPT-JT occurring in a 30-year-old male patient.

Gingival Fibroma: An Emerging Distinct Gingival Lesion with Well-Defined Histopathology.

Gingival growths, barring a few are mostly reactive and seldom exhibit significant true neoplastic potential. The common etiology is local irritation from dental plaque/calculus, trauma as well as medication-related overgrowth. Such lesions are easily distinguishable and categorized into diagnoses such as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, etc. We present a previously undescribed, but commonly encountered, reactive gingival growth with unique histologic features and suggest the diagnostic term "gingival fibroma." An IRB approved retrospective review of the University of Florida …

Skull Base Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma: Clinical Characteristics, Treatment, and Prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis and management for juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) of the skull base are challenging, and clinical data are limited. METHODS: A retrospective review of JPOF was performed, and the clinical characteristics, treatment strategy, and prognosis were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 23 patients pathologically confirmed with JPOF, most with JPOF located in the skull base area (19/23, 82.6%). Of those tumors, 43.5% presented with dura matter breakthrough. Most of the chief complaints were headache (n = 8, 34.8%) and visual impairment (n = 5, 21.7%). Most of the t…

Pediatric fibroma in maxillary sinus following nasal trauma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fibroma is a benign tumor of the connective tissue and is classified among the fibrous and fibrous histiocytic lesions. In the pediatric age group, both the differential diagnosis and surgery of maxillary swellings are difficult. CASE REPORTS: A 26-month old girl applied with swelling and malformation in the nose. She complained of swelling in the right cheek, nasal obstruction and dyspnea during the night time. Her family stated that she had a head trauma 45 days before the application. We observed a rigid mass in the lateral side of the right nasal region consistent with sever…

Desmoplastic fibroma associated with tuberous sclerosis: case report and literature review.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that affects the skin, brain, kidneys, and other organ systems. It may exhibit a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) of the jaw is a rare benign myofibroblastic neoplasm. Less than 10 cases of DF associated with TSC have been published previously. We report a new case of a maxillary DF in a 12-year-old girl with TSC. The presentation, diagnostic process, and management of this case are discussed, and the literature is reviewed for the additional cases of DF associated with TSC; 7 previous…

Pathological fracture of non-ossifying fibroma associated with neurofibromatosis type 1.

We report the management of a pathological fracture through a proximal tibial non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) in a 13-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The fracture was minimally displaced, and the lesion had clinical features of a NOF, and therefore biopsy was not required. Operative fixation has been the preferred method of treatment for pathological fractures through NOF associated with NF1. Multiple NOFs associated with NF1 are rare but can coalesce resulting in large lesions with an increased risk of pathological fracture. In cases which permit, non-operative treatment with c…

Trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma with aneurysmal bone cyst: a rare presentation.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm that is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age of onset, clinical presentation, and potential behavior. It mainly occurs in juveniles and has a slight male predilection and more aggressive behavior than a common ossifying fibroma. There are 2 distinct histopathological variants of this lesion: (1) psammomatoid pattern and (2) trabecular pattern. An aneurysmal bone cyst may occur in association with other bone lesions, such as fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and giant cell lesion. The cli…

Juvenile aggressive cemento-ossifying fibroma of the sinonasal tract: case report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a rare nonodontogenic tumor of the periodontal membrane that arises from the mesodermal germ layer. Clinically, these lesions are usually asymptomatic, slowly growing, and well circumscribed. However, they have demonstrated an aggressive course of development in a very small number of cases, particularly in younger patients. Surgical management via wide local excision is necessary because COF is notorious for recurrence, particularly lesions in the paranasal sinuses. We describe a case of juvenile aggressive COF of the sinonasal tract in a 12-year-old boy. Th…

Familial hyperparathyroidism associated with jaw fibroma: case report and literature review.

A 53-year-old female suffering from renal stones and hypercalcaemia was diagnosed as having primary hyperparathyroidism caused by hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands. She underwent total parathyroidectomy and implantation of parathyroid tissue. After one year, she underwent surgery for a jaw tumour. The pathological findings indicated it to be a cementifying fibroma. Jackson et al. (1990) reported the familial association of hyperparathyroidism with jaw tumours, and they suggested that this condition represents a new clinical syndrome. We believe that our case belongs to this syndrome.
