Medical Debt, Credit Card Debt, and Other Financial Debt Among Veterans Who Receive Homeless Assistance in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system is dedicated to preventing veteran homelessness, but there is limited research on the specific sources of financial debt among homeless veterans. We investigated the proportion of veterans seeking VA homeless services reporting any debt and specific types of outstanding debt, associations between homelessness experiences and debt, and whether these associations vary by sex. Using VA administrative data, we cross-sectionally evaluated various types of outstanding debt among 118 594 homeless and at-risk veterans in the VA healthcare sy

Prevalence and correlates of emotional, physical, sexual, and financial abuse and potential neglect in the United States: the National Elder Mistreatment Study.

OBJECTIVES: We estimated prevalence and assessed correlates of emotional, physical, sexual, and financial mistreatment and potential neglect (defined as an identified need for assistance that no one was actively addressing) of adults aged 60 years or older in a randomly selected national sample. METHODS: We compiled a representative sample by random digit dialing across geographic strata. We used computer-assisted telephone interviewing to standardize collection of demographic, risk factor, and mistreatment data. We subjected prevalence estimates and mistreatment correlates to logistic regres

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, anonymous online survey of adults with confirmed or suspected spinal CSF leak. Survey domains included diagnostic timelines, clinician encounters, referral pathways, structural barriers, and socioeconomic and emo

Rheumatoid Arthritis Exploratory Survey: Voices of Three Key Stakeholders (Patients, Caregivers, and Health Care Professionals).

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disorder that is associated with reduced quality of life, physical and emotional distress, and financial strain on caregivers and health care systems. Although RA has been thoroughly researched, the psychological effects and lived experiences of patients and caregivers remain underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the perspectives of patients with RA, caregivers, and health care professionals (HCPs) involved in RA management. DESIGN: Online cross-sectional exploratory survey. METHODS: The survey was conducted from Decem

Cancer diagnosed during pregnancy: a qualitative study of women's psychosocial experiences during treatment and survivorship.

This study examined the lived experiences of women diagnosed during pregnancy, focusing on emotional, psychological and practical challenges from diagnosis through survivorship. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using interview data from 20 women in the UK diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy. Participants were recruited via Mummy'

Co-Design of Strategies to Support the Implementation of a Paediatric Risk-Reduction Pathway for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia.

OBJECTIVES: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) affects 1 in 311 people. Left untreated, it elevates LDL-cholesterol from early life and drives premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Despite paediatric guidelines for early lipid-lowering, detection and management in Australia remain suboptimal. Shared-care models across general practice, paediatrics, and FH-specialist services are promising but under-implemented. We co-developed implementation strategies to support a paediatric FH risk-reduction pathway. METHODS: Two qualitative focus-group workshops with clinical, policy and advoc

Financing assistive technology-Policy options on the path towards universal health coverage.

Supporting functional ability in everyday life is essential for advancing toward universal health coverage (UHC). However, of the estimated 2.5 billion people in need of assistive technology (AT) globally, the vast majority do not have access. The main reason for this is financial barriers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to identify financing policy options for increasing access to affordable AT. The UHC concept, more specifically the three coverage dimensions-population, interventions (products and services), and costs, is used to descriptively analyze gaps

Supplemental Security Income for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults With Disabilities and the Role of the Pediatrician: Policy Statement.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program remains an important source of financial support for low-income families of children, adolescents, and young adults with disabilities. In most states, SSI eligibility also qualifies children for the state Medicaid program, providing access to health care services. The Social Security Administration (SSA), which administers the SSI program, considers a child disabled under SSI if there is a medically determinable physical or mental impairment or combination of impairments that results in marked and severe functional limitations. The impairment(s) m…

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychosocial Health of Persons With Spinal Cord Injury: Investigation of Experiences and Needed Resources.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by increased rates of depression and social isolation. However, we do not yet understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the psychosocial health of people with spinal cord injury (PwSCI), a population that is already at risk of experiencing mental health conditions. OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to (1) examine the impact of the pandemic on the psychosocial health of PwSCI and (2) investigate the experiences of PwSCI and resources they reported needing during the peak of the pandemic. Financial incentives for quitting smoking in pregnancy: Are they cost-effective?

AIMS: To evaluate whether adding financial incentives to usual care is cost-effective in encouraging pregnant women to quit tobacco smoking, compared with usual care alone. DESIGN: Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) and cost-utility analysis (CUA) from a health-care provider's perspective, embedded in the Smoking Cessation in Pregnancy Incentives Trial (CPIT III). Long-term analyses were conducted from the same perspective, using an existing Markov model over a life-time horizon. SETTING: Seven maternity smoking cessation sites in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom.

Strategies in primary healthcare to implement early identification of risky alcohol consumption: why do they work or not? A qualitative evaluation of the ODHIN study.

BACKGROUND: Screening and brief interventions (SBI) in primary healthcare are cost-effective in risky drinkers, yet they are not offered to all eligible patients. This qualitative study aimed to provide more insight into the factors and mechanisms of why, how, for whom and under what circumstances implementation strategies work or do not work in increasing SBI. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted between February and July 2014 with 40 GPs and 28 nurses in Catalonia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. Perceived Utility of Combining Atypical Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics With Psychosocial Interventions: An Exploratory Survey of Mid-Career Psychiatrists in Japan.

AIMS: Although combining long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) with psychosocial treatments for schizophrenia is important, psychiatrists' attitudes toward this approach remain underexplored. We investigated Japanese psychiatrists' perceptions of combining atypical LAIs with psychosocial interventions. METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional web-based survey was administered to 1038 mid-career Japanese psychiatrists, of whom 69 provided complete responses. Participants' general attitude toward recommending atypical LAIs was dichotomized as positive or negative/neutral, and they rated on
