In vivo analysis of bone fluoride content via NMR.

In vivo free induction decay signals have been detected from the fluoride ion (F) content of human finger bones by a 27 MHz pulsed single-coil nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. The intensity of these dipolar-broadened NMR signals can be used to estimate the F content of the middle phalanx of the index finger. This NMR procedure is the first non-invasive method capable of monitoring bone F contents. The preliminary results we report were obtained from patients known by previous biopsies to have relatively high bone F concentrations in their pelvis. This new monitoring technique doe

Contribution to the physicochemical rationale for the caries reducing effect of fluoride.

The effect of fluoride on the stability of apatites containing Na+ and CO3(2)- ions is described qualitatively. Also the boundaries of the apatite stability field in the quasi-septary system CaO - P2O5 - H2O - Na2O - CO2 - NaF - MX are presented. At these boundaries brushite (or monetite), octocalciumphosphate, calcite and calcium fluoride can become stable solid phases. As a consequence, certain mechanisms for the caries reducing effect of fluoride gain probability over other proposed mechanisms. First, it is likely that endemic fluoride yields more fully mineralized enamel which in turn resu

Dental fluorosis as related to the concentration of fluoride in teeth and bone.

Rats (N = 58), given a diet low in fluoride, were stomach-fed solutions of NaF and (NH4)3AIF6 in amounts corresponding to 3.3, 8.3, and 16.5 microgram of fluoride per gram of body weight. After five weeks, the incisors were scored for fluorosis and samples of the incisors and mandibles were analyzed for fluoride. Less fluoride was deposited in teeth and bone from AIF6, than from NaF at all dosage levels. Less fluorosis also developed from AIF6, except at the lowest dosage level, which produced very little fluorosis in either group. Both incisor fluoride and fluorosis scores increased with incr

[Influence of internal fluoride uptake on the eruption of deciduous teeth].

The possibility of influencing the eruptive behavior of deciduous teeth through the intake of fluorine is analyzed by comparing the average dates of eruption determined for several thousand subjects living in regions in which the drinking water has low and optimum contents of fluorine.

[Treatment of osteoporosis with a delayed-action sodium fluoride preparation].

40 patients with various types of osteoporosis, aged 17 to 76 years, were treated for 12 months with a new NaF-drug (Ossiplex-Retard, film tbl. 25 mg NaF plus 200 mg vitamine C). Daily dosage was 50-100 mg. Clinical symptoms, X-ray-status of the axial skeleton, alkaline serum phosphatase and the consumption of analgetics were used for assessment. 2/3 of the patients with presenile and steroid induced osteoporosis responded well to treatment, while those with osteogenesis imperfecta, idiopathic osteoporosis and plasmocytosis did not show clinical or radiological improvement. In senile osteoporo

Fluoride-18 scintigraphy in avascular necrotic disorders of bone.

Fluoride-18 scintigraphy is a simple, safe method for evaluating perfusion to bone, and obviates objections to earlier techniques. The scintillation camera with positron detection represents a unique instrumentation system because of its tomographic effect, relative insensitivity to vascular radioactivity in the surrounding skeleton, and excellent spatial resolution despite low counting efficiency. In 75 patients with avascular disorders about the hip, knee, elbow, foot and hand, the impressions obtained from fluoride-18 scintigraphy were correlated with clinical findings and roentgenograms an

Distinct natures of beryllium fluoride-bound, aluminum fluoride-bound, and magnesium fluoride-bound stable analogues of an ADP-insensitive phosphoenzyme intermediate of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase: changes in catalytic and transport sites during phosphoenzyme hydrolysis.

The structural natures of stable analogues for the ADP-insensitive phosphoenzyme (E2P) of Ca(2+)-ATPase formed in sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles, i.e. the enzymes with bound beryllium fluoride (BeF.E2), bound aluminum fluoride (AlF.E2), and bound magnesium fluoride (MgF.E2), were explored and compared with those of actual E2P formed from P(i) without Ca(2+). Changes in trinitrophenyl-AMP fluorescence revealed that the catalytic site is strongly hydrophobic in BeF.E2 as in E2P but hydrophilic in MgF.E2 and AlF.E2; yet, the three cytoplasmic domains are compactly organized in these states. Fluoride and the brain: A systematic review of neurotoxicity and developmental risks.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in soil, rocks, and groundwater, and its controlled use in drinking water is a well-established public health measure to prevent dental caries. However, growing evidence indicates that excessive fluoride exposure, particularly during critical periods of neurodevelopment, may exert neurotoxic effects. This systematic review evaluates current evidence on fluoride-induced neurotoxicity from in vitro, in vivo, and epidemiological studies. The findings reveal that fluoride exposure can induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and
