"Occipital Tunnel" Sign on FDG PET for Differentiating Dementias.

PET using FDG is a critical tool for evaluation of dementias, with characteristic patterns of hypometabolism suggesting specific diagnoses. Hypometabolism in the occipital region is recognized as an important finding associated with dementia with Lewy bodies and posterior cortical atrophy. We describe here the novel "occipital tunnel" sign, which results from relative sparing of FDG uptake in the medial occipital (primary visual) cortex compared with more severe loss in the surrounding lateral occipital (visual association) cortex. This sign is useful for recognizing the occipital findings of

Clinical utility of FDG-PET in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Huntington's disease.

AIM: To evaluate the incremental value of FDG-PET over clinical tests in: (i) diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS); (ii) picking early signs of neurodegeneration in patients with a genetic risk of Huntington's disease (HD); and detecting metabolic changes related to cognitive impairment in (iii) ALS and (iv) HD patients. METHODS: Four comprehensive literature searches were conducted using the PICO model to extract evidence from relevant studies. An expert panel then voted using the Delphi method on these four diagnostic scenarios. RESULTS: The availability of evidence was good fo

Andersson's lesion in ankylosing spondylitis diagnosed by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a form of arthritis that affects the spine, the sacroiliac joints and sometimes the hips and shoulders. Andersson lesion (AL), was first described by Andersson in 1937 as a destructive vertebral body and discovertebral portion of the spine in AS. In this case, we report a 50 years old man with medical history of AS diagnosed AL by fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT).

[PET-CT imaging features of primary ureteric lymphoma:
A case report and literature review].

To review the dual-time-point 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/X-ray computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging for a patient with primary ureteric lymphoma (PUL), and explore the potential of FDG PET-CT on diagnosis, staging and evaluation of treatment in patients with PUL.
Methods: Complete clinical and imaging data of one patient with PUL was reported. The relevant literatures from 1997 to 2016 were reviewed, and the imaging features of uriteric lymphoma were analyzed.
Results: The patient presented with microhematuria, a soft-density mass with moderate enhancement in t

Renal Intravascular Large B-cell Lymphoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

We herein report the case of a 52-year-old woman who consulted us because of a 2-month history of a fever, anorexia and weight loss. A physical examination was unremarkable. The blood count showed mild anemia and lymphopenia, and lactate dehydrogenase was elevated. Creatinine clearance was normal and proteinuria was undetectable. CT showed enlarged kidneys. A bone marrow biopsy was normal. PET-CT showed an intense uptake of 18fluorodeoxyglucose in both kidneys. A kidney biopsy provided the diagnosis of intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL). Kidney-limited IVLBCL without an impairment in

Remitting Seronegative Symmetrical Synovitis With Pitting Edema: Appearance on FDG PET/CT.

Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is a rare condition in the elderly and can appear as a first presentation of various types of rheumatic and malignant diseases. We presented a 62-year-old man with the diagnosis of RS3PE based on the clinical sign and laboratory data. Because of the possibility of associated malignancies in RS3PE, FDG PET/CT was performed to exclude occult tumors. The images showed multiple, symmetrically, diffusely increased F-FDG uptake in the soft tissue around joints and bones in the shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.

Use of imaging techniques in large vessel vasculitis and related conditions.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu's arteritis (TA) are large vessel vasculitis (LVV) primarily affecting the aorta and its major branches, mainly differentiated by the onset age (>50 years GCA and <40 years TA). In addition, temporal artery involvement and polymyalgia rheumatica are typical features of GCA, but not TA. Imaging techniques are required to secure the diagnosis of large-vessel vasculitides, and to monitor the disease course. Both morphological and metabolic imaging are involved. Morphological imaging is represented mainly by computerized tomography (CT), CT angiography, magn

Value of positron emission tomography scan in stage III cutaneous melanoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to review the collective experience and utility of FDG-PET scans (FDG-PET) in the detection of systemic metastases in patients with stage III melanoma. METHODS: A systematic search for relevant studies published between 1990 and 2012 was performed. We included English language studies that evaluated melanoma patients with stage III disease, with at least 10 patients per study, and collected statistical data to assess FDG-PET utility in the detection of distant metastases. The SIGN tool was used to evaluate methodological quality and a meta-analysis was

Increased 18F-FDG uptake by a retroperitoneal mature cystic teratoma in an infant.

A teratoma is a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor composed of well-differentiated derivations from at least 2 of the 3 germ layers. Mature cystic teratomas are known to have low metabolic activity and do not exhibit increased FDG uptake on PET. We report a case of mature cystic teratoma of the retroperitoneum showing increased FDG uptake in the solid portion. Pathologically, the solid portion was composed of abundant central nervous tissue. Increased FDG uptake in a teratoma may be not only due to an immature or malignant component but also to the presence of central nervous tissue.

Effect of basal ganglia calcification on its glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: The functional significance of basal ganglia calcification (BGC) in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (IH) is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of BGC on glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function in IH. METHODS: (18) F-FDG and (99m) Tc-TRODAT-1 nuclear imaging were performed in 35 IH patients with (n = 26) and without (n = 9) BGC. Controls were subjects without hypoparathyroidism or BGC (nine for (18) F-FDG and 12 for (99m) Tc-TRODAT-1). Relationship of the glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function was assessed with the neuropsychological and biochemical abnormalities.

Lymphomatous involvement of epididymis: detection and response assessment with (18)F-FDG PET/CT.

Lymphomatous involvement of epididymis, primary or secondary to extensive extranodal disease, is a rare entity. We describe a case of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma where staging F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated unsuspected lymphomatous involvement of epididymis and restaging FDG PET/CT showed complete response after chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of identifying the vulnerable plaque and predicting plague rupture and thrombus using by positron emission tomography/computed tomography angiography (PET/CTA). METHODS: Twenty-eight male New Zealand white rabbits were fed with hyper-lipid diet for 2 weeks before the balloon injury of the abdominal aorta. Then these rabbit were intermittently fed with hyper-lipid diet for 14 weeks, in order to trigger pharmaceutic the plague rupture and thrombus. PET/CTA scans of abdominal aorta were performed before and after the drug triggering, FDG uptake (standardi
