EFSA prohibits titanium dioxide in food- should pharmaceuticals be next?

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a natural, inorganic compound widely used across various industries due to its multiple properties. Recently, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) raised safety concerns regarding the use of TiO2 in foods, specifically its potential for genotoxicity, accumulation in the body, and associated health risks when used as a food additive. As a result, its use in food has been banned in the food industry in the European Union (EU) since 2022. Furthermore, the safety of TiO2 is currently being evaluated as a pharmaceutical excipient, and its use is likely to be banned i

Non-destructive and ultra-sensitive detection of Listeria Monocytogenes in ready- to-eat foods based on hollow cauliflower-like PdAg/ZnO by surface modification engineering.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) constitutes a considerable public health and environmental hazard, necessitating an urgent development of non-destructive and ultra-sensitive detection methods. In this study, a hollow cauliflower-like PdAg/ZnO was successfully fabricated via surface modified engineering strategies. The unique hierarchical hollow cauliflower-like structure, featuring abundant surface active sites and rapid gas transport channels, enhances the sensitivity of gas sensors for detecting the LM metabolic biomarker 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (3H2B). Meanwhile, the uniform loading of bimetallic

Design of an innovative framework based hybrid catalyst for simultaneous and sensitive monitoring of food additive and preservative of vanillin and nitrite in direct samples.

As vanillin (VAN) and nitrite (NIT) contamination in the food chain poses substantial threats to environmental and public health, rapid and portable detection is essential. The present study presents the first electrochemical sensor report based on a hybrid composite of Ni-TPA-MOF and MoS2/Co3O4. The oxidation of VAN and NIT exhibited sharp peaks and less over-potential on Ni-TPA-MOF/MoS2/Co3O4/GCE than on control electrode surfaces. On modified composite electrode surfaces, pH and scan rate were investigated for VAN and NIT. Further, the oxidation current exhibited high linearity at VAN and N

Advanced nanosensors for integrated food quality, hazard, and environmental monitoring.

Food spoilage is a major global challenge with ethical, social, economic, and environmental implications and is intrinsically linked to food safety. Food products are highly vulnerable to deterioration throughout their food value chain due to loss of freshness after chemical or biological hazards related to traceability features. Moreover, the conventional quality control strategies and analytical methodologies are reliant on extensive sample pretreatment, labor-tedious, low-throughput, costly, and operator-dependent. This comprehensive review aims to examine how nanotechnology (NanoT) advance

Detoxification of tuna from mercury through l-cysteine: a speciation-based study.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in tuna, especially as methylmercury (MeHg), remains a persistent food safety concern. This study assessed the effectiveness of l-cysteine in reducing total Hg (tHg) and MeHg in canned tuna and fresh fillets. Samples were treated with a 1.2% (w/w) cysteine solution and analysed by ICP-MS for tHg and frontal chromatography ICP-MS for MeHg. Untreated canned tuna contained 0.066-0.225 mg kg-1 tHg, whereas fresh fillets reached 1.036 mg kg-1. Cysteine treatment significantly reduced Hg levels, with mean removal of 48% in canned tuna and 64% in fillets. MeHg decreased pro

Mycotoxins in meat products.

Mycotoxin presence in meat products is principally due to the development of toxigenic moulds during ripening, which concretely affect the dry-cured ones. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is the most prevalent mycotoxin in dry-cured hams and fermented sausages. Apart from collecting information on the main toxigenic moulds in dry-cured meat products, the objective of this review is to compile data about the mycotoxin prevalence and the tools for their mitigation. Although no very extensive studies have been performed on the mycotoxin occurrence in such products, much research has been conducted over the las

Evaluating palm olein oil for Salmonella control in low-aw, high-fat food processing environments.

Over the past five decades, at least 18 major Salmonella outbreaks have been associated with chocolate products. Contamination of chocolate may occur at various stages, from raw material handling to processing and packaging. Due to its high fat content and low water activity, chocolate provides a protective environment for Salmonella at elevated temperatures, posing considerable health risks. Although strict hygiene protocols are implemented in dry production environments, effective cleaning, especially of chocolate transfer pipelines, remains a significant challenge. This study investigated t

Emerging nanomaterial-based sensors for foodborne pathogen and toxin detection.

Public awareness regarding the risks associated with foodborne pathogens and toxic microbial metabolites has led to a heightened demand for improved food safety and quality. The primary food safety concerns emphasize contamination during transit, improper food handling practices, inadequate cleanliness, food spoilage during storage, insufficient nutrients, and other factors that contribute to subpar food quality. Consumption of such compromised food can result in the transmission of foodborne illnesses due to toxins released by microorganisms. Conventional methods fail to address such challeng

Farm-to-consumer quantitative microbial risk assessment model for Listeria monocytogenes on fresh-cut cantaloupe.

Cantaloupe contamination with the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes (LM) may occur along the supply chain. We developed a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model for LM on cantaloupe along the fresh-cut supply chain and evaluated potential risk reduction strategies. The developed model starts at harvest and includes conditions during transportation from field to intermediate facility (packinghouse or cooling facility), handling at the intermediate facility, transportation to the fresh-cut facility, storage preprocessing at the fresh-cut facility, processing and handling at

Effects of cold atmospheric plasma on patulin degradation, polyphenol oxidase inactivation and other physicochemical properties of fresh-cut apple slices during storage.

Mycotoxin elimination is one of the significant concerns in the food industry. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a novel non-thermal method with high potential in this regard. This study aimed to evaluate the dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) cold plasma effect on fresh-cut apple slices contaminated with patulin. The contaminated slices were subjected to a 17-23 kV range of DBD for 2.5-10 min and stored for 14 days in the refrigerator. This treatment eliminated the patulin and total viable count (TVC) by 23 kV power and 2.5- and 8.5-min exposure. The polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity also decr

Food recalls associated with foodborne disease outbreaks, United States, 2006-2016.

About 800 foodborne disease outbreaks are reported in the United States annually. Few are associated with food recalls. We compared 226 outbreaks associated with food recalls with those not associated with recalls during 2006-2016. Recall-associated outbreaks had, on average, more illnesses per outbreak and higher proportions of hospitalisations and deaths than non-recall-associated outbreaks. The top confirmed aetiology for recall-associated outbreaks was Salmonella. Pasteurised and unpasteurised dairy products, beef and molluscs were the most frequently implicated foods. The most common path

Effect of sterilisation and storage conditions on the migration of bisphenol A from tinplate cans of the Lebanese market.

The use of bisphenol A (BPA) in lacquer coating of food cans has been restricted by different authorities in many countries, such as in Europe. However, such regulation does not exist in many other countries including Lebanon. Due to the lack of data on the quality of Lebanese can production; this study investigates the migration of BPA from two types of tinplate cans manufactured in Lebanon, before and after sterilisation. Cans were analysed under different storage conditions (time and temperature) and filled with an aqueous simulant. The determination of BPA was carried out using UPLC with f

Seek and destroy process: Listeria monocytogenes process controls in the ready-to-eat meat and poultry industry.

The majority of human listeriosis cases appear to be caused by consumption of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods contaminated at the time of consumption with high levels of Listeria monocytogenes. Although strategies to prevent growth of L. monocytogenes in RTE products are critical for reducing the incidence of human listeriosis, control of postprocessing environmental contamination of RTE meat and poultry products is an essential component of a comprehensive L. monocytogenes intervention and control program. Complete elimination of postprocessing L. monocytogenes contamination is challenging because t

Residues of carcinogenic animal drugs in food: difficulties in evaluation of human safety.

The indisputable need to intensify animal production in order to provide an adequate food supply for the world population involves the use of substances that are highly potent pharmacologically and toxicologically. The history of regulatory action with regard to such additives is similar to that for other substances: first, no regulation; next, an over-reaction; and now decisions based on judicious evaluation of scientific facts. One factor that differentiates the chemicals used in animal production from other food additives is that both the parent compounds and their metabolites appear in edi
