Tackling vitamin A deficiency with biofortified sweetpotato in sub-Saharan Africa.

Orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) is a rich plant-based source of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. In sub-Saharan Africa, sweetpotato is known as a food security crop but most varieties grown are high dry matter white-fleshed types, lacking beta-carotene. In 1995, researchers recognized the potential of OFSP varieties to address widespread vitamin A deficiency in SSA using an integrated agriculture-nutrition approach. With their partners, they confronted conventional wisdom concerning food-based approaches and institutional barriers, to build the evidence base and breed 4

Conditioned taste aversion in lesser bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis.

The lesser bandicoot rat after ingesting a sublethal dose of 0.025% zinc phosphide, in preferred food millet (Pennisetum typhoides) grains, for 4 days, showed aversion for 5-6 days towards plain millet offered in choice with the less preferred sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) grains. The aversion response to nontoxic bait was stronger (aversion index greater than 0.7) for first 3-4 days in individual and for 1-2 days in paired rats. 100% or more shift in aversion index from pre-treatment to post-treatment periods indicated that the aversive and naive partners of the heterosexual and unisexual female

Food-based enteral formulas in pediatric clinical practice: an expert opinion.

INTRODUCTION: Standard enteral formulas are widely used in pediatric practice but may be associated with gastrointestinal intolerance, limited food diversity, and caregiver dissatisfaction. Growing interest in whole-food feeding has led to increased use of blenderized tube feeds and food-based enteral formulas (FBEFs), although definitions and implementation strategies remain heterogeneous. AREAS COVERED: This expert opinion review summarizes evidence and practice-based insights from an international, multidisciplinary panel of physicians and dieticians on the use of FBEF in pediatric clinica

The critical role of gut-brain signalling in eating behaviour and obesity.

The process of eating can be divided into three distinct phases of behaviour: food seeking, food consumption and non-prandial activities. Th … t-derived signals are peripherally and centrally integrated to shape hunger, satiation and satiety, food preferences, and food-related learning. Chronic exposure to high-fat, high-sugar diets disrupts these mechanisms, driving a maladaptive state characterized by hyperphagia, food choice biases and habitual overeating. We examine the mechanisms underlying this mal …

Fatty Acids and Stomach Contents Reveal Dietary Overlaps of Two Prospering Squid Species in the North Sea.

Worldwide, the distribution ranges of cephalopods are expanding due to climate change. In the North Sea, the broadtail shortfin squid Illex coindetii (Ommastrephidae) has recently established a successful breeding population and now coexists with the local veined squid Loligo forbesii (Loliginidae). Among other squids, both species are potential food competitors. To investigate the trophic preferences of either species, we analyzed the fatty acid (FA) composition of the mantle tissue and the digestive gland (DG) via gas chromatography (GC). According to the FA trophic marker concept, FA signat

The Effect of the Musca domestica Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus on Food Consumption in Its Adult Host, the Common House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) substantially enlarges the house fly's salivary glands and prevents or delays ovarian development in its adult host, but the effect that MdSGHV has on the house fly's food consumption is currently unknown. Using house flies from a laboratory-reared colony, we evaluated the effect of MdSGHV infection on food consumption over a 7-d period. Both treatment (virus-infected) and control (saline-injected) flies were provided with a choice of 8% sucrose solution and 4% powdered milk solution to determine food preferences. Quantities of each…

A comparison of food-based decision-making between restricting and binge-eating/purging subtypes of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: By definition, restricting (ANR) and binge-eating/purging (ANBP) subtypes of anorexia nervosa (AN) differ in some manifestations of maladaptive eating behavior. This study aimed to determine whether the groups differ in the choices they make about what to eat, and whether there are differences in valuation related to food choice, using an experimental paradigm. METHOD: Inpatients with ANR (n = 40) and ANBP (n = 46) participated in a Food Choice Task. During the task, participants rated 76 food images for healthiness and tastiness, and choice preferences. Groups were compared in per

Starvation resistance and effects of diet on energy reserves in a predatory ground beetle (Merizodus soledadinus; Carabidae) invading the Kerguelen Islands.

The relationship between nutritional requirements and the availability or quality of food is a prime parameter in determining the geographic … ried similarly among individuals supplied on the distinct diets. Other parameters may determine the food preferences observed, such as salt content in prey tissues, because M. soledadinus mainly feeds in hypersaline foreshore habitats, and may limit the consumption of osmotic conformers.

Does environmental friendliness equal healthiness? Swiss consumers' perception of protein products.

Food production and consumption have major impacts on the environment. At the same time, changes in human diets worldwide are increasingly leading to health problems. Both issues are highly influenced by consumers' everyday food choices and could be addressed by reducing consumption of meat and other animal products. To promote sustainable food consumption, we need to know how consumers perceive the environmental friendliness and healthiness of food products, on which criteria they base their evaluations of environmental friendliness and healthiness, and how their estimations relate to life cy

Preferences for Over-the-Counter and Prescription Hearing Aid Processing Across Listening Environments.

PURPOSE: This study compared listener preferences for nonspeech environmental sounds processed by over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids (HAs) and premium-level prescription (PRSC) HAs among young adults with typical hearing sensitivity. METHOD: Seventeen participants completed a within-subject, double-blind, round-robin comparison of recordings obtained from the processed outputs of four receiver-in-canal HAs: two U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved OTC devices and two premium-level PRSC devices. Sound environments included conversational speech in complex noise, everyday nonspeech envir

β-Asarone modulate adipokines and attenuates high fat diet-induced metabolic abnormalities in Wistar rats.

Here we investigated the effect of β-asarone on food preference and its therapeutic potential against high fat diet (HFD) induced obesity in rats. In food preference study, free access to HFD was given only for 4h in addition to standard laboratory chow in rats and the preferential intake between chow and HFD was measured. For obesity induction, HFD was administered for 12 weeks and the HFD fed rats were treated with β-asarone in the last 4 weeks, starting from 9th week onwards. Food intake, body weight was measured biweekly. Glucose tolerance and the levels of glucose, lipids, free fatty acid

Access to gluten-free foods for people with coeliac disease in New Zealand.

AIM: A strict gluten-free (GF) diet is the current mainstay of treatment for coeliac disease (CD). A limited range of GF foods are available on prescription for those with CD. GF foods purchased in shops are typically more expensive than gluten-containing equivalents. This study sought to understand how New Zealanders with CD obtain GF products and the changes associated with this. METHOD: Coeliac New Zealand members were asked to complete an anonymous electronic survey in June 2023. RESULTS: Although 24% of the 522 respondents had accessed GF foods on prescription in the past, only 2% curre

Behavioural strategies in the regulation of food choice.

The maintenance of nutrient and energy balance in the body depends on both metabolic and behavioural mechanisms, and is integrated by the brain. The regulatory system was developed by natural selection and not by mechanical engineers. Thus, rather than having unitary mechanisms regulating intake of each nutrient, evolution has incorporated and used a multitude of behavioural traits and metabolic adaptations. The criterion for inclusion was that each one conferred a persisting advantage in the prevailing environment. Behavioural strategies in food choice include: innate preference for sweetness

An integrated approach to analyze equitable access to food stores under disasters from human mobility patterns.

Limited access to food stores is often linked to higher health risks and lower community resilience. Socially vulnerable populations experience persistent disparities in equitable food store access. However, little research has been done to examine how people's access to food stores is affected by natural disasters. Previous studies mainly focus on examining potential access using the travel distance to the nearest food store, which often falls short of capturing the actual access of people. Therefore, to fill this gap, this paper incorporates human mobility patterns into the measure of actual

Rats do not eat alone in public: Food-deprived rats socialize rather than competing for baits.

Limited resources result in competition among social animals. Nevertheless, social animals also have innate preferences for cooperative behavior. In the present study, 12 dyads of food-deprived rats were tested in four successive trials, and then re-tested as eight triads of food-deprived rats that were unfamiliar to each other. We found that the food-deprived dyads or triads of rats did not compete for the food available to them at regular spatially-marked locations that they had previously learnt. Rather, these rats traveled together to collect the baits. One rat, or two rats in some triads,

Manifestation of hemispheric laterality in chewing side preference and handedness.

Introduction: Humans manifest a behavioral inclination towards more utility of one side of the body, in relation with the dominant hemisphere of the brain. The current investigation assessed handedness together with chewing preference which have not been evaluated in various food textures before. Methods: Nineteen young and healthy volunteers chewed hard (walnut) and soft (cake) foods, during surface electromyography recording from masseter muscles. The side of the first and all chews in the two food types were determined and compared with the side of the dominant hand. Results: Results indica

Plant-based diets among young women in Scotland: 'Unless it's affordable, convenient, healthy, and familiar, it's a no'.

Moving towards more plant-based diets is a win-win for both human and planetary health. However, for successful adoption, such diets must be realistic and convenient. This study explored the factors influencing food choices among young women in Scotland and examined how they interpret and use plant-based and convenience food in their daily lives. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 women aged 18-24 and generated six themes using reflexive thematic analysis within a critical realist framework. We found meat consumption to be socially and culturally embedded, reinforced by family, pe

Determinants of vegetable food choice in families with limited food budgets in England: a focus group study to inform vegetable promotion programmes.

Vegetable consumption in many countries is less than recommended and even lower in low-income households. This study explored the determinants of current vegetable food choice in households with limited food budgets to inform the implementation of a national vegetable promotion programme. Five focus groups and one individual interview were conducted with twenty-nine parents who self-identified as 'shopping on a budget' in an area of multiple deprivation in the southeast of England. Transcripts of audio recordings were coded in NVivo and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Four main the

Phytoestrogen intake and other dietary risk factors for low motile sperm count and poor sperm morphology.

BACKGROUND: Few potentially modifiable risk factors of male infertility have been identified, and while different diets and food groups have been associated with male infertility, evidence linking dietary factors including phytoestrogens and semen quality is limited and contradictory. OBJECTIVES: To study the associations between phytoestrogen intake and other dietary factors and semen quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-referent study was undertaken of the male partners, of couples attempting conception with unprotected intercourse for 12 months or more without success, recruited from 14
