The reconstruction of segmental bone defects after surgical treatment of infected delayed unions as well as nonunions, places the highest demands on the surgical technical implementation. After treating the fracture-related infection, guaranteeing biomechanical stability is crucial for the success of the treatment. The presented case describes the successful treatment of an infected delayed union after an open metadiaphyseal comminuted fracture of the proximal femur using a modified Masquelet technique. A solid allogeneic bone graft in combination with autologous cancellous bone were inserted

A three-year-old female spayed Lurcher was referred for the treatment of a highly comminuted distal tibial articular fracture. Resection of the area of comminution with a transverse osteotomy of the tibial diaphysis and talar ridges was performed, followed by modified pantarsal arthrodesis and a calcaneotibial screw. The treatment resulted in 7 cm of tibial shortening, equating to a 28% reduction in the total tibial length. Radiographic union of the arthrodesis was successful. Fair use of the pelvic limb was documented long-term. Combined acute limb shortening and modified pantarsal arthrodesi

BACKGROUND: Closed reduction and locked intramedullary nailing has become a common surgical method in the treatment of femoral shaft fractures. Overlap and rotation displacements can usually be corrected through the use of an orthopedic traction table. However, lateral displacement and angulation persist.
METHODS: In this paper, we describe a joystick that can be used in the closed reduction of a fracture. It can correct lateral displacement and angulation, and has the advantage of multi-direction reduction. The device described in this paper includes two parallel horizontal joysticks, one ve

Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss and skeletal fragility and is likely to occur in postmenopausal women. Distal radius fracture is a type of fragility fractures associated with osteoporosis. Bone mineral density (BMD) refers to the amount of mineral in bone tissue and is an indicator of osteoporosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of distal radius comminution and the BMD of the healthy contralateral forearm and femur in postmenopausal women. Of 165 women who sustained low-energy trauma from falls on flat ground, forearm and femoral neck BMDs were

BACKGROUND: Trapezium fractures are rare carpal injuries, and comminuted intra-articular patterns with severe bone loss are exceptionally uncommon and challenging, with no established consensus; patient-specific 3D printing may offer a reconstructive option.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 51-year-old man who sustained a transfixing nail-gun injury, resulting in severe right wrist pain and limited thumb motion. Imaging showed a comminuted trapezium fracture with severe bone loss. The patient underwent stage I debridement, antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer placement, and external fixation, f

A seven-month-old male Pomeranian presented with left forelimb lameness after a fall. Radiographic assessment confirmed proximal radial head and ulnar comminuted fracture. The initial surgical intervention involved the use of hybrid external skeletal fixation (ESF) to stabilize the radial head, concomitant with the application of a composite of bone morphogenetic protein type 2 (BMP-2)-loaded hydroxyapatite and gelatin microparticles at the fracture site. Although successful radial head healing was achieved, the ESF pinholes caused a defect in the proximal ulnar diaphysis. Subsequently, the ES

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinus fractures are relatively rare. Their surgical management significantly differs depending on whether the posterior wall is invaded and the clinical features vary. A bicoronal incision or endoscopic approach can be used. However, the minimally invasive approach has been attracting attention, leading us to introduce a simple and effective surgical method using multiple-threaded Kirschner wires.
METHODS: All patients had isolated anterior wall fractures without nasofrontal duct impairment. The depth from the skin to the posterior wall was measured using computed tomograp

BACKGROUND: Blunt trauma to the anterior of the neck may compromise the vital structures like major blood vessels, trachea, larynx, pharynx, thyroid, spine, esophagus, and the cricoid. Laryngeal trauma is rare and accounts for 1% of all neck blunt traumas. Cricoid trauma is also very rare and accounts for half of the laryngeal traumas, and the diagnosis is frequently missed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old man, with blunt neck trauma after being hardly hit by a crane lifting hook, was referred to the Shahid Beheshti Hospital. The patient complained of dysphonia (hoarseness) and dyspnea. The

Background Distal radial fractures (DRFs) are a prevalent form of skeletal injuries that hinder a person from performing daily living activities. Although several treatment modalities have been established to manage DRF, an optimal intervention has not been identified for comminuted fractures. The use of locking compression plates (LCPs) is gaining popularity for fractures that cannot be anatomically reduced because they offer better stability and early recovery. Thus, this study aims to investigate the surgical outcome of comminuted intra-articular DRFs treated with LCPs. Methodology We perfo

PURPOSE: Although the pronator quadratus (PQ) preservation approach for volar plating of distal radius fracture has been commonly used recently, its superiority to the conventional PQ dissection approach, especially for comminuted intra-articular distal radius fractures, has not been well established. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of PQ preservation for comminuted intra-articular fractures and to evaluate the healed PQ during hardware removal surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2014 to March 2019, 86 patients who underwent both volar plating for AO Foundation/O

BACKGROUND: Free bone fragments were difficult to be fixed in many comminuted midshaft clavicle fractures, and the absence of cortical alignment in comminuted fractures had direct influence on the stability of fixation. This survey was performed to assess the efficacy of doubled-suture Nice knot augmented plate fixation in the treatment of comminuted midshaft clavicle fractures.
METHODS: Between 2013 and 2018, all patients with comminuted midshaft clavicle fractures treated with doubled-suture Nice knot augmented plate fixation were retrospectively reviewed and included in this research. Demo

Introduction: This case report describes the reconstruction of a severe comminuted fracture and bone defect in the lateral half of the clavicle using a novel titanium prosthesis. This unique prosthesis has been specifically designed and three dimensionally printed for the clavicle, as opposed to the Oklahoma cemented composite prosthesis used in common practice. The aims of this study were to: (1) describe the prosthesis, its stress analysis, and its surgical fixation and (2) to demonstrate the results of the 2-year follow-up of the patient with the lateral clavicle prosthesis. Patient's Main

INTRODUCTION: Obesity continues to be a problem in the United States with greater than 35% of the adult population affected. Obesity influences fracture care as it affects impact forces, alters cellular pathways of healing, and is often associated with higher complication rates. Distal radius fractures are among the most common fracture patterns in the adult population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of BMI on the degree of intra-articular fracture comminution, operative time, and return to the OR in obese patients who underwent operation for distal radius fractures.

UNLABELLED: The talus is the second most common fractured tarsal bone. While their incidence may be low, talus fractures are severe injuries that can lead to long-term disability and pain. Displaced talar body fractures are typically treated through an open approach with the aim of obtaining anatomic reduction and stable fixation. There are several case reports in the literature demonstrating successful management of talus fractures arthroscopically. An arthroscopic approach minimizes soft tissue trauma, which can help decrease postoperative wound complications and infections. In this article,
