Public parks in the city of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil, and the risk of parasitosis transmission by freshwater gastropods.

Urban parks are not only important for the wellbeing of the human population, but are also widely considered to be potentially important sites for the conservation of biodiversity. However, they may offer risk parasitic infections, such as schistosomiasis and fascioliasis, which are both transmitted by freshwater snails. The present study investigated the occurrence of freshwater gastropods in urban parks of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, and their possible infection by helminths of medical-veterinary importance. Gastropods were collected from six parks (2021 - 2022) and examined for th

World of Crayfish™: a web platform towards real-time global mapping of freshwater crayfish and their pathogens.

Freshwater crayfish are amongst the largest macroinvertebrates and play a keystone role in the ecosystems they occupy. Understanding the global distribution of these animals is often hindered due to a paucity of distributional data. Additionally, non-native crayfish introductions are becoming more frequent, which can cause severe environmental and economic impacts. Management decisions related to crayfish and their habitats require accurate, up-to-date distribution data and mapping tools. Such data are currently patchily distributed with limited accessibility and are rarely up-to-date. To addr

Hydropower Plants as Dispersal Barriers in Freshwater Species Distribution Models: Using Restrictions through Asymmetrical Dispersal Predictors.

Hydropower plants represent one of the greatest threats for freshwater fish by fragmenting the habitat and avoiding the species dispersal. This type of dispersal barrier is often disregarded when predicting freshwater species distribution due to the complexity in inserting the species dispersal routes, and thus the barriers, into the models. Here, we evaluate the impact of including hydroelectric dams into species distribution models through asymmetrical dispersal predictors on the predicted geographic distribution of freshwater fish species. For this, we used asymmetrical dispersal (i.e., AEM

The structural analysis of secretion in the freshwater mite Limnesia maculata (Acariformes, Limnesiidae) supports the idea of a new form of arthropod silk.

The structural characteristics of silk secretion of the freshwater mite Limnesia maculata (O.F. Müller) (Acariformes, Limnesiidae) are described and analyzed for the first time based on light, atomic force and electron-microscopical approaches. The common dermal glands (14 pairs scattered over the body) produce silk mostly during the warm summer season. The process of silk secretion lasts from several hours to several days. The silk may appear like barely recognized clouds of a fine whitish substance. An individual silk thread is an indefinitely long uniform unbranched and non-stretchable tube

TET-Yeasate: An engineered yeast whole-cell lysate-based approach for high performance tetracycline degradation.

The widespread of tetracycline (TC) residues in anthropogenic and natural environments pose an immediate threat to public health. Herein, we established the TET-Yeasate, an approach based on whole-cell lysate of engineered yeast, to mitigate the TC contamination in environment. The TET-Yeasate is defined as the biological matrix of whole cell lysate from engineered yeast that containing TC-degradative components (Tet(X), NADPH, Mg2+) and protective macromolecules. The TET-Yeasate was able to efficiently eliminate TC residues in tap water (98.8%), lake water (77.6%), livestock sewage (87.3%) an

Transcriptomic responses of saline-adapted Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to rearing in both saline and freshwater.

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is an important species for global aquaculture. Recently, a single genetic line of Nile tilapia was developed using estimated breeding values (EBVs) for body weight under moderately saline water that showed significant improvement in growth performance. To explore the molecular mechanisms underlying this enhanced growth capacity, RNA-Seq was used to profile differences in gene expression in the liver and pituitary gland of high- and low-growth performance families of male Nile tilapia progeny, reared in either saline or freshwater environments. Comparis

A faunistic survey of snails and their infection with digenean trematode cercariae in Bandar-e Anzali at the littoral of the Caspian Sea.

Trematodes are known as a diverse group of endogenous parasites, which snails as their intermediate hosts can dramatically affect parasite transmission dynamics. Snails play a key role in life cycles of digenean trematode. However, there has not been much faunistic surveys in terms of snails' distribution in Iran. The current study was aimed to identify snail's fauna and their current geographic distribution in four regions of Guilan province, Iran. Several species of snails (land and freshwater snails) were obtained from 4 different areas (2018-2019), and then samples were separately transfer

Challenges and Opportunities Presented by Current Techniques for Detecting Schistosome Infections in Intermediate Host Snails: A Scoping Review.

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), causes morbidity and mortality in over 250 million people globally. And 700 million people are at risk of contracting it. It is caused by a parasite of the genus Schistosoma. Freshwater snails of the family Planorbidae are of public health significance as they are intermediate hosts of these highly infective flukes. Accurate diagnostic techniques to detect schistosome infections in intermediate host snails (IHS) and environmental surveillance are needed to institute measures for the interruption of transmission and eventual elimination. We c

Putative intranuclear coccidium in Mauremys leprosa (Schweigger) from Morocco.

Although intranuclear coccidiosis was first identified in chelonians less than 30 years ago, it is now considered an important emerging disease. Symptoms include anorexia, weakness and weight loss, potentially leading to death of the infected animal. The use of molecular tools has led to improved diagnosis and has also led to an increase in known host species. Here we report a putative intranuclear coccidium in Mauremys leprosa (Schweigger), from Morocco, based on 18S rDNA sequence analysis. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of this parasite from a freshwater terrapin spe

On the causes of geographically heterogeneous parallel evolution in sticklebacks.

The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an important model system for the study of parallel evolution in the wild, having repeatedly colonized and adapted to freshwater from the sea throughout the northern hemisphere. Previous studies identified numerous genomic regions showing consistent genetic differentiation between freshwater and marine ecotypes but these had typically limited geographic sampling and mostly focused on the Eastern Pacific region. We analysed population genomic data from global samples of the three-spined stickleback marine and freshwater ecotypes to detect

Biological and anthropogenic predictors of metal concentration in the Eurasian otter, a sentinel of freshwater ecosystems.

Toxic metals have been linked to a range of adverse health effects in freshwater organisms. However, for higher vertebrates, there is little understanding of the large-scale drivers of exposure. We quantified toxic metal/semi-metal concentrations in a sentinel freshwater top predator, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), across England and Wales, and determined how this varied with key natural and anthropogenic factors. We related liver concentrations in 278 otters that died between 2006 and 2017 to habitat biogeochemistry, proximity to point source contamination and to biological characteristics

Description of a new species of freshwater crab of the genus rcithelphusa Pati & Sudha Devi, 2015 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) from the Western Ghats, Kerala, India.

A new species of the hitherto monotypic gecarcinucid freshwater crab genus, Arcithelphusa Pati Sudha Devi, 2015, is described from the Western Ghats, in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. Arcithelphusa tumpikkai sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from the only congener, A. cochleariformis Pati Sudha Devi, 2015, mainly by its relatively broader carapace, the presence of a short flagellum on the exopod of the third maxilliped, and the relatively less stout male first gonopod, with a sharply bent and relatively long terminal segment. The diagnosis for Arcithelphusa is emended to include the

Leptospira infections in freshwater fish in Morogoro Tanzania: a hidden public health threat.

Leptospirosis caused by spirochete bacterium of genus Leptospira affects humans and animals worldwide. Rodents are major reservoirs of leptospires whereas wetland and aquatic migratory birds also carry and transmit leptospires. Leptospirosis studies in fish are lacking in African countries despite favourable environment and abundant reservoirs, which can spread leptospires into aquatic habitats and infect fish. The objectives of this study were to determine presence of Leptospira in fish; the prevalent Leptospira serovars and whether are related to serovars reported in animals; and to ascertai

Dysenteric syndrome due to Balantidium coli: a case report.

A 28-year-old man was hospitalized for a dysenteric syndrome that had developed during the previous days. Physical examination revealed abdominal pains, fever, vomiting and more than ten liquid stools per day. Fresh stool examination showed numerous mobile ciliated trophozoites of Balantidium coli. The patient reported having been on a hike the previous weekend during which he had drunk water through a hydration pouch bladder. Complete resolution was observed after intravenous rehydration and ten days of oral treatment with metronidazole (Flagyl®). Balantidium coli is the largest ciliate proto

Mass flux calculations show strong allochthonous support of freshwater zooplankton production is unlikely.

Many studies have concluded terrestrial carbon inputs contribute 20-70% of the carbon supporting zooplankton and fish production in lakes. Conversely, it is also known that terrestrial carbon inputs are of very low nutritional quality and phytoplankton are strongly preferentially utilized by zooplankton. Because of its low quality, substantial terrestrial support of zooplankton production in lakes is only conceivable when terrigenous organic matter inputs are much larger than algal production. We conducted a quantitative analysis of terrestrial carbon mass influx and algal primary production e

Critical review of actually available chemical compounds for prevention and management of cyanobacterial blooms.

Cyanobacteria proliferation is among the most threatening consequences of freshwater pollution. Health risks from human and other-organism exposure to cyanobacteria have led to an effort to find practical methods for cyanobacterial water-bloom reduction. Hence, methods and techniques have been developed in order to reduce the amount of phosphorus or to decrease the abundance of nuisance phytoplankton species directly in the water bodies (in-lake measures). Although these "acute" methods do not solve the problem of catchment area eutrophication, they are cheaper, easier to manage, and for some

Coexistence of diploid, triploid and tetraploid crucian carp (Carassius auratus) in natural waters.

BACKGROUND: Crucian carp (abbreviated CC) belongs to the genus of Carassius within the family of Cyprinidae. It has been one of the most important freshwater species for Chinese aquaculture and is especially abundant in the Dongting water system of Hunan province. CC used to be considered as all diploid forms. However, coexistence of diploid (abbreviated 2nCC), triploid (abbreviated 3nCC) and tetraploid crucian carp (abbreviated 4nCC) population of the Dongting water system was first found by our recently researches. RESULTS: We examined the ploidy level and compared biological characteristic
