Fate of the nasal capsular cartilages in prenatal and perinatal tamarins (Saguinus geoffroyi) and extent of secondary pneumatization of maxillary and frontal sinuses.

Development of the nasal capsule cartilages was studied in seven Geoffroy's tamarins (Saguinus geoffroyi), including one fetus, five neonates and one infant. Four additional postnatal specimens of the genus were studied (one 5-month-old and three adults) to determine the magnitude of postnatal expansion of the paranasal sinuses. Alcian blue histochemistry and osteopontin immunohistochemistry were employed in selected subadult specimens to characterize cartilage matrix. The fetal S. geoffroyi possesses a continuous nasal capsule, including a zona anularis; the primordial maxillary sinuses are s

A new species of Skrjabingylus Petrov, 1927 (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) from the frontal sinuses of the hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura (Mustelidae).

Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. is described based on specimens from the frontal sinuses of a hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura, collected from the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. differs from the other 5 species in the genus in having pointed spicule tips that lack a rounded or lobed formation and by lacking a prominent distal projection at the tail tip. Morphometric comparisons show that S. santaceciliae n. sp. is much smaller than the only other valid species from Mephitis, Skrjabingylus chitwoodorum Hill, 1939. Likewise, morphometric compari

A Large Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses Involving the Anterior Frontal Fossa: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

The Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that arises mainly from the pleura. The sinonasal tract is generally not affected by SFT, and less than 100 cases have been reported in the English literature to date. We report an extremely rare SFT of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses extending into the anterior frontal fossa through the floor of the anterior skull base. To our knowledge, this case is the fourth SFT of the sinonasal tract involving the anterior frontal fossa in the world. Meanwhile, the tumor, measuring 13 × 6 cm in images, is the largest SFT of the sinonas

Automatic segmentation and classification of frontal sinuses for sex determination from CBCT scans using a two-stage anatomy-guided attention network.

Sex determination is essential for identifying unidentified individuals, particularly in forensic contexts. Traditional methods for sex determination involve manual measurements of skeletal features on CBCT scans. However, these manual measurements are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and error-prone. The purpose of this study was to automatically and accurately determine sex on a CBCT scan using a two-stage anatomy-guided attention network (SDetNet). SDetNet consisted of a 2D frontal sinus segmentation network (FSNet) and a 3D anatomy-guided attention network (SDNet). FSNet segmented frontal

Development and validation of a new formula for sex estimation based on multislice computed tomographic measurements of maxillary and frontal sinuses among Brazilian adults.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of the measurements of the maxillary sinus (MS) and frontal sinus (FS) in sex estimation among Brazilian adults using multislice computed tomography (MCT) and to develop and cross-validate a new formula for sex estimation. METHODS: The present cross-sectional research was conducted in two phases: (1) development of a formula on the basis of the measurements of both the sinuses (50 males and 50 females); and (2) validation study (20 males and 20 females). The linear measurements (height, width and diameter) were assessed using the RadiAnt DICOM software. A

Prediction of the clinical outcome of acute frontal sinusitis with ventilation measurement of the nasofrontal duct after trephination: a long-term follow-up study.

Acute frontal sinusitis has become an increasing clinical problem in the region that is served by the hospital represented by the authors of this study. The standard surgical treatment protocol after the failure of conservative therapy has been to perform trephination of the involved frontal sinus. More sophisticated procedures have been used in patients with prolonged or recurrent disease. The authors have developed a simple ventilation test of the nasofrontal duct that can be used to determine which patients require further surgery. In a long-term follow-up study of 85 patients, this ventila…

Contribution of Morphology of Frontal Sinuses (Linear and Volumetric Measurements) to Gender Identification Based on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images (CBCT): A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Human identification is considered as an important step in the reconstruction of biological profiles, especially of unknown individuals. Frontal sinuses (FS) have been regarded as an ideal anatomical structure for individualisation because few pathological conditions can potentially alter their shape. AIM: The aim of this review was to evaluate scientific evidence published since January 2010 and determine whether the dimensions and volume of FS might be useful parameters for gender determination and human identification, based only on cone beam computed tomography images (CBCT).

Forensic Identification of Decomposed Human Body through Comparison between Ante-Mortem and Post-Mortem CT Images of Frontal Sinuses: Case Report.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to report on a case of positive human identification of a decomposed body after the comparison of ante-mortem (AM) and port-mortem (PM) computed tomography images of frontal sinus. CASE REPORT: An unknown, highly decomposed human body, aged between 30 and 40 years, was found in a forest region in Brazil. The dental autopsy revealed several teeth missing AM and the presence of removable partial prostheses. The search for AM data resulted in a sequence of 20 axial images of the paranasal sinuses obtained by Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT). PM reproducti

'Canalization' of the frontal sinus: a functional approach for the management of post-traumatic sinusitis with lateral bony septa. Report of two cases and long-term follow-up.

The patency of the naso-frontal duct is a key issue in the surgical management of chronic frontal sinusitis. Most of the current operative techniques only provide access to the paramedian portions of the frontal sinus. A canalization approach that allows a functional frontal sinus to be maintained while providing good access to the most lateral areas of the sinus is described herein. Two cases of severe post-traumatic frontal sinusitis, operated on successfully by canalization method based on the conservation of the frontal sinus and the maintenance of the patency of the naso-frontal duct, usi…

GADNN: a revolutionary hybrid deep learning neural network for age and sex determination utilizing cone beam computed tomography images of maxillary and frontal sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: The determination of identity factors such as age and sex has gained significance in both criminal and civil cases. Paranasal sinuses like frontal and maxillary sinuses, are resistant to trauma and can aid profiling. We developed a deep learning (DL) model optimized by an evolutionary algorithm (genetic algorithm/GA) to determine sex and age using paranasal sinus parameters based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: Two hundred and forty CBCT images (including 129 females and 111 males, aged 18-52) were included in this study. CBCT images were captured using the New

Biocement--a new material. Results of its experimental use for osseous repair of skull cap defects with lesions of the dura mater and liquorrhea, reconstruction of the anterior wall of the frontal sinuses and fixation of alloimplants.

A newly developed material, which we call biocement, consisting of bisphenol-a-glycidyl methacrylate ("epoxide methacrylate') as organic matrix and Bioceramic Battelle, Bioglass Hench and/or pentacalcium hydroxide triphosphate ("tri-calcium phosphate') powder as filling particles is presented. In an extension of previous experiments, various types of this biocement, containing different admixtures of particulate matter, were employed to test their usefulness in head surgery, in particular maxillo-facial reconstruction, on dogs and a rhesus monkey. Encouraging results were obtained with regard
