Activity of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in gastric mucosa was examined in 12 control subjects and 48 patients with various degree of chronic gastritis. To assess the significance of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) using an electronic longitudinal scan we examined 75 patients. 32 patients suffering from malignant diseases of the stomach (2 early cancers, 22 gastric carcinoma, 4 cancers of the cardia, 2 gastric lymphoma, 2 infiltration from outside). 31 of the 32 patients who had malignant gastric diseases were correctly diagnosed by means of EUS. Often misdiagnosed as malignancy due to atypical presentation and non-specific findings, it typically affects immunocompromised individuals or those with mucosal damage from surgery or trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement is associated with considerable complications. We added laparoscopic monitoring to improve outcome.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients who had laparoscopy-assisted PEG (LAP-PEG) were reviewed. A 5 mm supraumbilical trocar and two 5 mm working ports were required for LAP-PEG. A needle was placed percutaneously into the stomach under laparoscopic and gastroscopic control. A wire was placed through the needle, encircled with a snare, and the PEG completed. The anterior wall of the stomach was then anchored to the abdominal wall.
