OBJECTIVES: This paper describes treatments completed under dental general anesthesia (DGA) for a cohort of adults with disabilities. This patient cohort was followed up a number of years later to determine outcomes and identify factors that predict further use of DGA.
METHODS: A retrospective patient record review and cross-sectional survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 64 patients who had previously received dental treatment under general anesthesia. Patient record review extracted data on patient demographics and treatment provided under DGA. Cross-sectional survey a number of

BACKGROUND: The advent of Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) does influence the overall oral health care of children. The children undergoing HAART have shown an increase in caries activity owing to sugars in medicines to make them more palatable.
AIM: The aim of the study was to assess and compare the Oral Health of Children Living with HIV/AIDS (CLHAs) and Adolescents Living with HIV/AIDS (ALHAs) undergoing HAART and those who are HAART-naïve.
METHODS: This study was carried out at different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) across Kerala, India. The study group consisted o

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Severe hemodynamic fluctuations during dental treatment can trigger highly undesirable physical reactions. A study was made to determine whether the administration of propofol and sevoflurane contributes to the stabilization of hemodynamic parameters during dental treatment in pediatric patients versus the use of local anesthesia alone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty pediatric patients needing dental treatment were assigned to either general anesthesia with local anesthesia (study group [SG]) or local anesthesia alone (control group [CG]). Two percent sevoflurane in oxygen (

BACKGROUND: Athletes with disabilities may be at an even greater risk of orofacial trauma than their counterparts, and the risk may vary depending on the type of sports. This study aimed to assess the incidence of sports-related dental injuries and oral health status among Malaysian para-athletes.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted to assess self-reported dental injuries and knowledge of their management. An intraoral examination was performed using the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index following the World Health Organization guidelines.
RESULTS: A total of 61 para-a

AIMS: Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) linked to the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become increasingly frequent. To perform a bibliometric and critical review of the general panorama of publications on oral mucosal lesions (OML) associated with ICIs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Systematized searches were performed in four databases. The included studies were organized and bibliometric and clinical data were extracted and analyzed using VantagePoint and Microsoft Excel. Most of the 35 included studies were reports or case series (n = 33/94.2%). The American authors stood out (n

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe a disability-simulating learning unit (DSLU) to raise dental students' awareness of the special needs of patients with disabilities as well as to measure the effect of the DSLU on ableism.
METHODS: A DSLU among final-year undergraduate dental students (n = 33), was developed and evaluated. The students were randomly divided into two groups (Group I, n = 17; Group II, n = 16). Group II only received conventional teaching (control group), whereas Group I was additionally exposed to the DSLU (intervention group). In the DSLU, typical physical restrictions

INTRODUCTION: There has been a global increase in patients with special needs. Undergraduate dental curricula need to adjust to meet the needs of these patients. This study aimed to identify how confident final year dental students felt about treating patients with special needs upon graduation and evaluate the influence that the curriculum had on their preparedness based on competencies outlined by the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH).
METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to final year dental students at two different Universities in Scotland and in Spain

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of disparity in access to dental care and tooth loss between US adults with and without disabilities at the state level.
METHODS: This secondary analysis included data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a cross-sectional state-run annual telephone survey of noninstitutionalized US adults aged 18 years or older. The primary predictor, having any disability, was defined as reported difficulty in hearing, vision, cognition, mobility, self-care, or independent living. The two dental outcomes used were

AIMS: Periprosthetic infections are a severe complication, causing enormous morbidity. The role of oral diseases in the development of such infections has been discussed controversially, showing a large discrepancy between prevalence of oral foci and infections of endoprostheses (EP). This narrative review aimed in explaining and discussing two hypotheses for the occurrence of oral disease-associated EP infections.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The hypotheses include two mechanisms. (1) In case of an acute exacerbation during the early healingperiod after EP surgery (first 3 months). (2) Coincidental

BACKGROUND: Factitious disorder imposed on self (FDIS), also known as Munchausen's syndrome, is a psychological disorder characterized by falsification of physical or psychological symptoms without an obvious external incentive. Oral presentations of FDIS are infrequently reported, and diagnosis might be challenging because affected patients often have impressive skills in fabricating symptoms and deceiving healthcare professionals.
AIM: To describe the diagnostic dilemma and management challenges in a female patient who presented with tooth ache and oral ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Primary oral mucosal melanoma (OMM) represents an extremely rare and aggressive tumor that arises from malignant transformation and clonal expansion of melanocytes in the oral cavity. The prognosis of patients affected by OMM is quite unfavorable, with survival rates lower than those described for patients with cutaneous melanoma.
CASE REPORT: Here, we report a case of OMM in a 59-year-old Caucasian woman, who was referred for evaluation of a large asymptomatic pigmented lesion on the left side of the hard palate under the removable total denture. Incisional biopsy was performed,

INTRODUCTION: Probiotics are living microorganisms that act on the host-microbiome interface to restore the microbiota's physiological homeostasis. Numerous probiotics have been marketed with inhibitory activity against Streptococcus mutans and consequently with a potential anti-caries effect, mainly of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, whose main disadvantage is their limited ability to settle in the oral cavity.
METHODS: This narrative review describes the main Streptococcus spp. with probiotic anti-Streptococcus mutans activity, whose substantivity is greater than that of Lacto

INTRODUCTION: Down syndrome (DS), an easily recognized congenital disease, is associated with a high prevalence of dental anomalies. Therefore, special dental care is required.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report described the minimally invasive prosthetic rehabilitation of a 31-year-old female patient with DS. Prompt diagnosis, consultation with physicians and family, and accurate medical history were needed, and relevant dental, medical, mental, and behavioral factors were considered. A minimally invasive treatment plan was decided after clinical examination, orthopantomography (OPG), and s

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is distinguished by cognitive disability, a concave profile, and systemic complications. Oral diseases have been reported to be common in DS patients.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between DS and periodontal diseases.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched six bibliographic databases up to January 2023 and used additional search methods to identify published studies on gingivitis or periodontitis in people with and without DS. Meta-analysis, risk of bias, sensibility analysis, publication bias, and evidence grading were all carried out.

AIMS: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a mutation in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. It is characterized by profound and severe motor disability. Patients with RTT grind their teeth, causing damage to their permanent teeth. This article aims to describe the case of an 8-year-old child with RTT and the methods of botulinum toxin-based treatment for teeth grinding.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to monitor the effects of treatment. The masseter and temporal muscles, responsible for the elevation of the mandible, were in
