Dynamics of functional and effective connectivity within human cortical motor control networks.

OBJECTIVE: Praxis, the performance of complex motor gestures, is crucial to the development of motor and social/communicative capacities. Praxis relies on a network consisting of inferior parietal and premotor regions, particularly on the left, and is thought to require transformation of spatio-temporal representations (parietal) into movement sequences (premotor). METHOD: We examined praxis network dynamics by measuring EEG effective connectivity while healthy subjects performed a praxis task. RESULTS: Propagation from parietal to frontal regions was not statistically greater on the left th…

Action intentions modulate visual processing during action perception.

The current debate on mechanisms of action understanding and recognition has re-opened the question of how perceptual and motor systems are linked. It has been proposed that the human motor system has a role in action perception; however, there is still no direct evidence that actions can modulate early neural processes associated with perception of meaningful actions. Here we show that plans for action modulate the perceptual processing of observed actions within 200 ms of stimulus onset. We examined event-related potentials to images of hand gestures presented while participants planned eith…

A virtual trajectory model predicts differences in vocal fold kinematics in individuals with vocal hyperfunction.

A simple, one degree of freedom virtual trajectory model of vocal fold kinematics was developed to investigate whether kinematic features of vocal fold movement confirm increased muscle stiffness. Model simulations verified that increases in stiffness were associated with changes in kinematic parameters, suggesting that increases in gesture rate would affect kinematic features to a lesser degree in vocal hyperfunction patients given the increased levels of muscle tension they typically employ to phonate. This hypothesis was tested experimentally in individuals with muscle tension dysphonia (MT

Error types in ideomotor apraxia: a qualitative analysis.

Seventeen brain-damaged subjects with dominant hemisphere pathology and 24 matched control subjects were asked to perform simple familiar gestures under four conditions: (1) verbal command (pantomime), (2) imitation, (3) with the actual object, and (4) verbal command a second time. The subjects subsequently watched a video of an actor performing simple movements and decided whether or not these were performed accurately. The gestural production task was videoed and analyzed for error type. Error type remained consistent over the four task conditions, although subgroups of patients made differe…

SurfaceXR: Fusing Smartwatch IMUs and Egocentric Hand Pose for Seamless Surface Interactions.

Mid-air gestures in Extended Reality (XR) often lead to fatigue, discomfort and imprecision, limiting their suitability for extended use. Surface-based interactions offer a compelling alternative, providing improved accuracy, speed, and comfort. However, current egocentric vision-based methods struggle with reliable surface inputs due to challenges in hand tracking and surface plane estimation from oblique and occluded viewing angles. To this extent, we introduce SurfaceXR, a novel sensor fusion approach that combines headset based hand tracking with micro-vibration data sampled from commodity…

Body-templated printing of a large-area and imperceptible organic sensing interface for skin motion recognition.

Skin motions provide rich information about our gestures, bodily status, and environmental interactions. However, large-area detection, sensing resolution, and imperceptibility have been a trilemma for current technologies to truthfully record skin motions. Here, we report a body-templated printing strategy to create a conformal sensing interface for large-area and subtle skin motion detection. Using a mild airflow to guide the deposition of an organic semiconducting ink, a sensing path is directly created to conform with skin topologies at the microscale and adapt with irregular human surface…

Dysarthria and orofacial apraxia in corticobasal degeneration.

The authors evaluated dysarthria and orofacial apraxia (OFA) in 10 patients with a clinical diagnosis of corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Ni … of the tongue and the lips were impaired in all patients. OFA, evaluated with simple and sequential gestures, was present in nine patients. Sequential gestures were more frequently impaired. The score of OFA was not correlated to the severity of dysarthria, suggesting independent underlying mechanisms. Thus, when specifically assessed, dysarthria and OFA a …

Pantomime agnosia.

Visual agnosia is impaired visual recognition not explained by defective visual acuity, visual fields, attention, or general mental ability. Two nonapraxic patients with lesions in the left occipital lobe could imitate pantomimes they could not recognise. Although both patients had a hemianopia, sparing of gesture imitation shows that no visual defect accounts for their inability to recognise pantomimes. Both patients were amnestic and alexic but had no general impairment of cognitive ability to account for a pantomime-recognition disorder. These patients seem to have agnosia for pantomime. Fr

Timing of tongue body movements in V1-C-V2 sequences with respect to segment boundaries in German.

Understanding and modeling the timing of speech gestures are central to theories of speech motor control and to applications, such as articulatory speech synthesis. In this study, realizations of Vowel1-Consonant-Vowel2 (V1-C-V2) sequences were recorded with electromagnetic articulography to analyze the onset and offset times of tongue body movements between the vowels V1 and V2 relative to the acoustic interval of the consonant C. For this, the consonants /ʔ,m,f,p,pf/, which do not require specific tongue movements, and the vowels /a,i,u/ were considered. The relative onset time of the V1-V2 …

Functional neuroanatomy of language without speech: An ALE meta-analysis of sign language.

Sign language (SL) conveys linguistic information using gestures instead of sounds. Here, we apply a meta-analytic estimation approach to neuroimaging studies (N = 23; subjects = 316) and ask whether SL comprehension in deaf signers relies on the same primarily left-hemispheric cortical network implicated in spoken and written language (SWL) comprehension in hearing speakers. We show that: (a) SL recruits bilateral fronto-temporo-occipital regions with strong left-lateralization in the posterior inferior frontal gyrus known as Broca's area, mirroring functional asymmetries observed for SWL. (b…

Timing deficits in apraxia of speech.

This paper deals with a particular aspect of speech motor control in patients suffering from apraxia of speech. Three experiments are reported concerning the phase relations between individual speech gestures. These include the timing of laryngeal, velar and labial movements relative to lingual gestures. A total of 8 patients and 12 normal controls were examined using speech material which was designed according to appropriate phonetic paradigms. Evaluation was performed on the basis of speech signal parameters referring to the kinematics of inter-articulatory phasing. Deviations of the patien…

Structure of nods in conversation.

Head nods are a commonly observed gesture in daily conversations and has attracted the interest of many researchers in human, social, and computer sciences since early studies. However, there has been little research focusing on the structure of nod movement, which sometimes involve repetition of upward and downward movements. In this study, we shed light on this structure of nods which has been previously overlooked. Prior to the analysis, we propose systematic conceptualization of nod movement. First, we define a cycle as a consecutive upward and downward movement as the basic unit of analys
