Genomic characterization of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from gills of Labeo rohita: Insight into resistome, virulence and pathogenicity.

Antibiotic resistance in aquaculture settings is an emerging issue that threatens animal and human health. In this work, a multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strain (RG3) was isolated from the gill of Labeo rohita obtained from a retail fish market in Punjab, India. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed resistance to various antibiotic groups, with intermediate susceptibility to imipenem. Whole-genome sequencing produced a 3.70 Mb draft genome with 3,814 genes and 39 resistance determinants. Genome analysis identified a chromosomally encoded multidrug resistance phenotype, incl

Olivine and dissolved alkalinity trigger different bacterial community shifts in water and oyster gills: insights from a mesocosm experiment.

Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) is a proposed marine carbon dioxide removal strategy that increases seawater buffering capacity and CO2 uptake through the addition of alkaline substances. While OAE shows promise as a climate mitigation tool, its ecological implications remain poorly understood, particularly regarding microbial communities. This paper provides a risk assessment of two different OAE strategies: alkalization with olivine and alkalization with addition of dissolved sodium hydroxide (NaOH). With a mesocosm experiment designed to simulate coastal OAE application, European flat oy

Adverse Effects of Glyphosate and Microcystin-LR on Fish Health: Evidence from Structural and Functional Impairments in Zebrafish Gills.

Glyphosate (GLY) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) frequently co-occur in natural water bodies. In this study, a subacute exposure test was conducted on zebrafish treated with 3.5 mg/L GLY and 35 μg/L MC-LR, individually and in combination, for 21 d to determine their effects on the gills of zebrafish and their potential mechanisms. The hematoxylin and eosin staining and scanning electron microscopy examination results showed that GLY and MC-LR exposure caused structural damage to gills. Biochemical analysis revealed Na+-K+-ATPase activity decreased, and the levels of reactive oxygen species, 8-hydro…

Integrative Taxonomy of Tereancistrum spp. (Monopisthocotyla: Dactylogyridae) Parasites of the Gills of Freshwater Fishes from the Caatinga Domain, Brazil.

Tereancistrum is a common genus of Neotropical monopisthocotylans; however, information on its diversity and phylogeny remains limited. In this study, we describe four new species of Tereancistrum parasitizing the gills of Prochilodus brevis (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) from a weir in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Tereancistrum spiralocirrum n. sp. and Tereancistrum scleritelongatum n. sp. are characterized by a dextro-ventral vaginal pore and a Y-shaped dorsal bar. Notably, Tereancistrum spiralocirrum n. sp. is the first species in the genus to possess a male copulatory organ (MCO) with mu…

Two new dactylogyrid species (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) parasitising the gills of Garra gotyla (Cyprinidae) in India: morphological and molecular characterization.

Garra gotyla is a benthopelagic freshwater cyprinid fish native to Asia, valued for both food and ornamental purposes; nevertheless, its parasitic diseases are poorly understood. The present study investigated the presence and ecological indices (prevalence and intensity) of monogenean parasites infecting G. gotyla in Mizoram, northeast India. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the phylogenetic relationships among three closely related dactylogyrid genera: Dactylogyrus, Dogielius, and Dactylogyroides. Monogeneans were initially identified based on the comparative morphology of their scler

Monitoring Bioaccumulation (in Gills and Muscle Tissues), Hematology, and Genotoxic Alteration in Ctenopharyngodon idella Exposed to Selected Heavy Metals.

Health and environmental problems arising from metals present in the aquatic ecosystem are very well known. The present study investigated toxicological effects of LC15 of metals such as copper, chromium, and lead for 24, 48, 72, and 96 h on hematological indices, RBC nucleus and cell morphology, and gill and muscle tissues of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Experimental dose concentrations of copper were 1.5, 1.4, 1.2, and 1 mgL-1. Similarly, dose concentrations of chromium were 25.5, 22.5, 20, and 18 mgL-1 while those of lead were 250, 235, 225, and 216 mgL-1, respectively. Maximum dec

Novel histopathological and molecular effects of natural compound pellitorine on larval midgut epithelium and anal gills of Aedes aegypti.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is a vector for transmitting dengue fever and yellow fever. In this study, we assessed the histopathological and molecular effects of pellitorine, an isobutylamide alkaloid, on the third instar of Ae. aegypti larvae. At 5 mg/l concentration of pellitorine, the whole body of the treated larvae became dark in color, particularly damaged thorax and abdominal regions. Pellitorine was targeted mainly on midgut epithelium and anal gills, indicating variably dramatic degenerative responses of the midgut through a sequential epithelial disorganization. The ant…

Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in the gills of two euryhaline crabs, Callinectes sapidus and Carcinus maenas, by heavy metals.

Two subcellular fractions of gill tissue, cytoplasm and basolateral membranes, from two species of euryhaline decapod crustaceans, Callinect … nd subsequently transferred to 10 per thousand. The presence of a metal-resistant CA isoform in the gills of C. maenas suggests that this species would not be restricted from its normal estuarine environment by heavy metal pollution.

Histological changes in relation to accumulation and elimination of inorganic and methyl mercury in gills of Labeo rohita Hamilton.

L. rohita was exposed to identical concentrations of inorganic and methyl mercury (HgCl2 and CH3HgCl) and the gills were studied for mercury bioaccumulation and histological changes. In methyl mercury exposed group the mercury level in the gills continuously increased til the end of the exposure period whereas the level started decreasing from the day 30 onwards in the other group even though the exposure was continued for 60 days. Histological changes were similar in inorganic and methyl mercury treated fish except the higher intensity observed in the latter treatment. Under depuration for 15…

Microplastic ingestion and phthalate esters bioaccumulation in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares): tissue-specific distribution across gills, stomach, and muscles.

This study investigates the contamination of phthalate esters (PAEs) and microplastics (MPs) in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) collected from the southern coast of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Results revealed significantly higher PAE concentrations in red muscle tissue (2595-72,734 ng/g ww), with DiNP, DnBP, and DEHP as the dominant compounds, compared to lower levels in white muscle (271.98-811.49 ng/g ww). Specifically, the stomach (92 particles) contained a higher number of MP particles compared to the gill (56 particles). Fibrous rayon dominated in the gills, likely due to water filtration, whi…

Presence of Adult Cardicola forsteri (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae) in the Gills of Southern Bluefin Tuna: Implications for Diagnosis and Pathology.

Blood flukes cause serious health issues for farmed bluefin tuna worldwide. Their infection severity has been assessed by counting adult flukes in heart flushes. However, Cardicola orientalis adults reside in blood vessels in the gills. The aim of this study was to assess species composition, prevalence and intensity of adult blood fluke infection in gill blood vessels of ranched Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii. Based on molecular analysis, out of 41 adult blood flukes found in the gills of the tuna, 32 flukes were confirmed to be C. forsteri, while only 1 fluke was C. orientalis. Ther…
