This clinical investigation examined the effect of a single subgingival irrigation of chlorhexidine 0.2% or sanguinarine on gingivitis affecting orthodontically banded first molars in adolescent patients. The inadequacy of traditional methods in controlling plaque and gingivitis has led to an increasing interest in the chemical approach, especially using toothpastes and mouthrinses. Various agents have been tested by a variety of experimental designs. Further work in this field should include monitoring the effect of long-term use on the oral ecology and an appraisal of the experimental designs used in longitudinal studies of antiplaque and antigingivitis agents.

Patients with hemorrhagic disorders are a concern to the dental profession because of their propensity for severe and prolonged intraoral bleeding following therapy, especially subgingival debridement and surgical procedures. One of the most common and perhaps least recognized hereditary coagulation disorder is von Willebrand's disease, also referred to as pseudohemophilia, vascular hemophilia, angiohemophilia, and idiopathic prolonged bleeding time. A case report of a patient with von Willebrand's disease who presented complaining of acute gingival pain and bleeding is presented.

A protocol is presented for the clinical evaluation of agents used to control chronic gingivtis in man. Assessment is divided into three phases of increasing duration which are the initial screening of products over 1 month, the main gingivitis trial lasting at least 6 months and judging the effect of the product in preventing periodontitis which is extended for at least 3 years. The advances in data processing have made it possible to collect information separately on the three parameters of gingival inflammation.
