Prioritizing gender equity and intersectionality in Canadian global health institutions and partnerships.

Despite governmental efforts to close the gender gap and global calls including Sustainable Development Goal 5 to promote gender equality, the sobering reality is that gender inequities continue to persist in Canadian global health institutions. Moreover, from health to the economy, security to social protection, COVID-19 has exposed and heightened pre-existing inequities, with women, especially marginalized women, being disproportionately impacted. Women, particularly women who face bias along multiple identity dimensions, continue to be at risk of being excluded or delegitimized as participa…

Deep Vein Thrombosis in Intravenous Drug Users: An Invisible Global Health Burden.

The prevalence of intravenous drug use has increased in the past decade and it represents an important risk factor for deep vein thrombosis. Intravenous drug use is a global problem, with the main culprit being heroin. Peer pressure and poverty in high-risk groups such as sex workers, females, and young adults raise the risk of intravenous drug use, which expresses itself in the form of venous thromboembolism eventually. Deep vein thrombosis typically manifests itself eight years after the initial intravenous drug administration, rendering it a silent killer. Aiming to review and summarize exi

Effect of global atmospheric aerosol emission change on PM2.5-related health impacts.

Background: Previous research has highlighted the importance of major atmospheric aerosols such as sulfate, through its precursor sulfur dioxide (SO2), black carbon (BC), and organic carbon (OC), and their effect on global climate regimes, specifically on their impact on particulate matter measuring ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Policy regulations have attempted to address the change in these major active aerosols and their impact on PM2.5, which would presumably have a cascading effect toward the change of health risks. Objective: This study aimed to determine how the change in the global emissions of an

UK health performance: findings of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010.

BACKGROUND: The UK has had universal free health care and public health programmes for more than six decades. Several policy initiatives and structural reforms of the health system have been undertaken. Health expenditure has increased substantially since 1990, albeit from relatively low levels compared with other countries. We used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 (GBD 2010) to examine the patterns of health loss in the UK, the leading preventable risks that explain some of these patterns, and how UK outcomes compare with a set of comparable count

Good epidemiology, good ethics: empirical and ethical dimensions of global public health.

This paper examines the following ethically and epidemiologically relevant challenges, as yet neglected in public health ethics: how to distribute resources and health risks and benefits, how to define evidentiary criteria that justify public health interventions, and how to define terms in which programme goals, successes, and failures will be assessed and monitored. We illuminate critical intersections of empirical and ethical dimensions of public health work, drawing upon three global public health interventions-inclusion of the Hepatitis B vaccine in the Universal Immunisation Programme, U

Increasing access to nonprescription medicines: a global public health challenge and opportunity.

As escalating health-care costs continue to be a focus of public discourse, the populace has become increasingly attentive to its own health and lifestyle choices. Nonprescription (over-the-counter, OTC) medicines represent an important option in this evolving environment and, through novel "Rx-to-OTC" switch efforts, could expand beyond their traditional role in symptomatic relief of common conditions such as minor pain, coughs, colds, heartburn, and allergy. This is certainly not a new concept. In fact, the self-care movement has roots reaching into the past century. Pharmaceutical companies

Global distribution, public health and clinical impact of the protozoan pathogen cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium spp. are coccidians, oocysts-forming apicomplexan protozoa, which complete their life cycle both in humans and animals, through zoonotic and anthroponotic transmission, causing cryptosporidiosis. The global burden of this disease is still underascertained, due to a conundrum transmission modality, only partially unveiled, and on a plethora of detection systems still inadequate or only partially applied for worldwide surveillance. In children, cryptosporidiosis encumber is even less recorded and often misidentified due to physiological reasons such as early-age unpaired immunolo

The 'lived-in experience' of global health: The grassroots wisdom we risk losing.

Global Health has accumulated unprecedented knowledge through frameworks, indicators, guidelines, datasets and increasingly powerful digital tools. Yet one valuable resource remains remarkably underused: the lived-in experience of people who have spent decades delivering grassroots health care. This experience is more than accumulated information; it is tacit wisdom shaped by repeated encounters with patients, communities, health systems, scarcity, failure, adaptation and unintended consequences. Such wisdom reveals what actually works, what fails, why programmes succeed or falter at the last …

Developing and Validating a Global Governance Framework for Health: A Delphi Consensus Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed major deficiencies in global health governance, including fragmented authority, inequitable resource distribution, and weak compliance mechanisms. Although the WHO Pandemic Agreement (2025) addresses several of these gaps, significant operational and institutional challenges remain. This study aims to develop and empirically validate a Global Governance for Health (GGFH) Framework that strengthens leadership, financing, equity, and legal accountability across global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: A three-round Delphi study was conducted. Thi…

Long-Term Care as a Global Challenge: The Role of the World Health Organization.

Long-term care is today one of the most pressing issues in public policy. Its relevance is increasing everywhere but mostly, due to population aging, in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the advances in the past decades regarding the implementation of long-term care systems in several countries, the COVID-19 pandemic showed their fragility and called to rethink long-term care around the world. Issues like quality, workforce shortages, and financial sustainability are key in countries with systems in place and for those who are embarked in the task of designing and establishing a long-t

Reclaiming the new era in global health: A proposal for an equity-centered paradigm.

Global health is facing unprecedented upheaval, with significant donor disruptions requiring a reconfiguration of the global health landscape. While recently proposed frameworks for the next phase of global health represent meaningful progress in grappling with this context, their central weakness is not technical but normative. In this Essay, we argue that if the new global health architecture is defined without meaningful interrogation of its central purpose, then the system will reproduce the very problems it aims to solve. On the other hand, explicitly centering health equity as the organi…

Environmental degradation as a recipe for emerging viral diseases: implications for global health.

The rise of new viral illnesses poses a substantial risk to global public health, as their incidence and impact have increased over the past few decades. This article thoroughly examines the complex connection between environmental degradation and the development of new viral diseases. Human activities, such as deforestation, urbanization, and industrial agriculture, have significantly altered ecosystems, increasing the likelihood of virus transmission from animals to humans. The alteration of natural environments brings wildlife species that serve as hosts for several viruses into closer prox

The gatekeepers of global health knowledge: A systematic review of diversity in editorial boards.

Editorial boards (EBs) can shape global health research by determining what is published, which methods are legitimised, and whose knowledge is prioritised. The persistent underrepresentation of scholars from minoritised backgrounds raises concerns about which researchers and types of knowledge may be systemically disregarded. This review consolidates all evidence on EB diversity, highlighting how power and representation are distributed in global health publishing. Five databases were searched from inception to 30 July 2025, with no language restrictions. Eligible studies included primary, pe…

[From the emergence of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to global health emergencies].

For a long time neglected, the mpox virus has caused two public health emergency declarations by the World Health Organization in just two years. Rapid detection and characterization of the viral strains involved are crucial for better control of the disease. Recent work on viral genome sequencing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has shown the emergence in 2023 of clade Ib, with sustained human-to-human transmission and rapid spread to several other non-endemic neighboring countries, as well as outside Africa. On the other hand, variants of clade Ia, which is predominant in the DR

Global Burden of Penile Cancer: A Review of Health Disparities for a Rare Disease.

We performed a narrative review evaluating the influence of race and socioeconomic status for penile cancer patients based on region. We found higher incidence in underdeveloped nations. Globally, HPV-associated tumors are more prevalent, particularly in areas with high HPV and HIV infection. Socioeconomic determinants exacerbated these disparities. Similarly, in the United States, disparities were notable among racial and ethnic groups, with black men having worse survival. Understanding sociodemographic differences may help mitigate disparities by improving access to care with targeted inter
