OBJECTIVE: To elucidate whether exposure to some environmental factors, i.e. cigarette smoking and iodine deficiency influence the risk of thyroiditis.
METHODS: We identified a cohort of 874, 507 parous women with self-reported information on smoking during pregnancy registered in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry from September 1983 through December 1997. Hospital diagnoses of thyroiditis (n = 286) and hypothyroidism (n = 690) following entry into the cohort were identified by record-linkage with the national Inpatient Registry. The hazard ratio (HR) of smokers compared to non-smokers and t

BACKGROUND: The course and variations of thyroid arteries must be understood by surgeons to prevent bleeding during operative procedures of the thyroid gland. There is limited scientific literature regarding the radiological anatomy of thyroid arteries in this geographical area, the Garhwal region of Sub-Himalayan belt, which is considered to be the endemic belt of goiter. Computed tomography angiography provides a three-dimensional orientation of the vascular and surgical anatomy of the entire cervical region.
AIM: To estimate the proportion of variation in origin of thyroid arteries using C

Resorcinol administered at high doses to rodents can disrupt thyroid hormone synthesis and can produce goitrogenic effects. These effects were not seen in a 2-year bioassay at doses of up to 520 mg/kg/day. There are species-specific differences in synthesis, binding, and transport of thyroid hormone that complicate interpretation of goitrogenesis in rodents. Clinical case reports from patients undergoing resorcinol therapy for dermatological indications reveal thyroid side effects when copious amounts of resorcinol-containing ointments are applied to integrity-compromised skin for months to ye

Knowledge of the effect of differences in iodine intake levels on public health in areas with no endemic goiter is limited. Groups at risk when iodine intake is relatively low are pregnant and lactating women and their newborns. A prospective randomized study was performed to evaluate the effect of iodine supplementation in an area where the median daily iodine excretion in urine is around 50 micrograms. Fifty-four normal pregnant women were randomized to be controls or to receive 200 micrograms iodine/day from weeks 17-18 of pregnancy until 12 months after delivery. In the control group, seru

Together with A. Costa of Turin, we have found adequate iodine in the food along the Northern slopes of the Alpine range in Valais, Switzerland, which has been known as a goitrous zone from time immemorial. In various statistical reports it has been pointed out that ostensibly the morbidity of goiter only regresses after the iodine added to the cooking salt is increased from 5 mg to 10 mg per kg. We see a regression of juvenile goiter only, because after puberty, 50 per cent of the Swiss population over the age of 50 have already developed goiter. We have found a goiter in rabbits and other ex

OBJECTIVE: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is often accompanied by underlying thyroid pathology and 1 to 36% of these thyroid pathologies are malignant. How the identification of these lesions affects patient management is unclear. We present a single-center experience with the prevalence of concomitant thyroid cancer in patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for pHPT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Two hundred-two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism included study. Demographic data, clinical findings, and final histopathological diagnosis were record

The influence of inadequate iodine intake on maternal and neonatal thyroid status in Saki, a locality known to have environmental iodine deficiency and located within the goitre belt of Southwestern Nigeria was investigated. One hundred and five (105) subjects and ninety (90) controls from Ibadan were recruited into the study. All subjects were apparently healthy with at least thirty-seven (37) completed weeks of gestation. Each subject was assessed for goitre and blood sample obtained by venepuncture for thyroid function tests before onset of labour. Spot urine samples were also obtained from

The iodine concentration was determined in 89 thyroid tissue samples of post-mortem examination material of thyroid healthy persons in dependency to the age. Before the 22nd week little iodine is stored in the fetal thyroid gland (median and range: 24 micrograms/g wet weight [0 to 27 micrograms/g]). From the 23rd week on the concentration is significantly higher (p = 0.004). There is a further increase of iodine concentration in the first 6 months of life, with a median concentration of 171 micrograms/g (75 to 808 micrograms/g). With a median of 599 micrograms/g (464 to 699 micrograms/g) the i

Thyroid function and exposure to dietary goitrogenic factors (iodine deficiency and thiocyanate overload) were studied at birth and from birth to 7 years in 200 neonates and 347 children living in the severe endemic goitre area of Ubangi, Northern Zaire. Serum T4 was at the lower limit of normal at birth (104 +/- 4 nmol/l) and stayed at that level during the first year of life (123 +/- 9) (NS), but decreased to 75 +/- 8 (P less than 0.001) at 2-4 years and to 62 +/- 6 (P less than 0.001) at 5-7 years of age. Mean serum FT4 decreased from 10.4 +/- 0.9 pmol/l during the first year to 8.2 +/- 1.0

BACKGROUND: Congenital hypothyroidism and endemic iodine deficiency are the most common cause of mental retardation. However in both cases retardation is of nonpreventable nature.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether epidemiological study in school-aged children or neonatal screening of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) was useful to assess iodine status and monitor the preventive measures of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).
SUBJECTS: To study the epidemiology, 1046 school children, aged 8 to 12 years from 23 primary schools in rural and urban areas from three cities in

With the understanding that various drugs, industrial chemicals, and chemicals of environmental importance can increase thyroid hormone hepatic metabolism and excretion, it is important to consider whether compensation by the thyroid gland for this increased excretion can lead to stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and possibly secondary hyperplastic or neoplastic changes in the thyroid. The compounds discussed in this review all affect thyroid function by increasing biliary excretion of thyroid hormone metabolites. Numerous studies have been performed to elucidate the effec

Thyroid angiosarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy, which occurs more frequently in the alpine region, likely associated with iodine deficiency and endemic goiter. This is an aggressive neoplasm that usually harbors a poor prognosis. We report the case of a 49-year-old Portuguese female patient presenting with a large nodule in the anterior neck region, with rapid growth and associated dysphonia. The neck ultrasound showed a hypoechogenic and heterogeneous thyroid nodule, with a larger axis of 44 mm. The fine needle aspiration cytology was not conclusive, and a biopsy of the lesion was perfo

INTRODUCTION: Primary thyroid tuberculosis (TB) is rare even in countries where TB disease is endemic, with the prevalence ranging from 0.1 to 1.15%. Primary thyroid lymphoma is uncommon, and the majority of lymphomas arising in the thyroid gland are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of B-cell origin, of which about 25% is extranodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma (MALToma).
CASE PRESENTATION: An 86-year- old Turkish female patient with thyroid nodules and cervical lymphadenopathies presented with large multinodular goiter and compressive symptoms. Total thyroidectomy and central lymph node dissection w

Groundwater is a vital source of fresh water for human consumption, cooking, and irrigation. In populations with endemic goiter, high nitrate concentrations have been reported in groundwater, raising concerns about its impact on thyroid function. This study evaluated the effects of chronic exposure to groundwater on Xenopus laevis larvae throughout the entire metamorphic process, focusing on thyroid function. Larvae were divided into three groups: control (C, drinking water), groundwater-exposed (G), and positive control (PC, drinking water plus potassium perchlorate). Metamorphic progression,

Severe iodine deficiency in pregnancy can result in cretinism. There is growing concern that less severe iodine deficiency may also affect fetal growth and development. A handful of prior small New Zealand studies focussed on pregnant women living in Dunedin. This study utilised biochemical, clinical and dietary indices to assess iodine status of 170 women living throughout New Zealand. The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of the women was 38 μg/L, well below the 150 μg/L cut-off value that indicates adequate iodine status; 7% of women had goitre. Not surprisingly, iodine intake was a
