We conducted a cross-sectional study of zoonotic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum in humans in Western Province, Papua New Guinea, confirmed by internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Overall hookworm prevalence was 54.9%; A. ceylanicum hookworms were present in 3.3% of specimens. One Health approaches are needed for hookworm control in Papua New Guinea.

Anthrax disease is an anthropozoonosis caused by a Gram-positive bacterium, Bacillus anthracis. Our objective was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features of the 2014 epidemic in Koubia prefecture. This retrospective study examined all of the anthrax cases reported in Fafaya, Koubia Prefecture. In March and April 2014, there were 39 cases of human anthrax reported, for an incidence of 1.135%. Infections due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially gram-negative bacteria, are a common cause of child mortality in Papua New Guinea. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria include the enteric gram-negative bacilli, especially Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Enterobacter, and Haemophilus influenzae type b, a major respiratory tract pathogen and cause of meningitis. Beta-adrenoceptor-mediated relaxation of guinea-pig taenia caecum was investigated by studying the effects of BRL37344, CGP12177 and norepinephrine. These drugs caused graded relaxation of the guinea-pig taenia caecum. The concentration-response curves for these drugs were unaffected by propranolol, atenolol, butoxamine, prazosin, yohimbine and phentolamine. The village-based surveillance system for guinea worm disease (dracunculiasis), which has been established in all endemic villages in Ghana, was used to carry out a retrospective study of long-term disability due to the disease. METHODS: Propranolol, 0.1 mg/day, was used systemically by gavage in eight albino guinea pigs. Normal saline was given to another group of seven guinea pigs.

Reported is a case of aseptic knee effusion associated with the presence of a calcified guinea worm, Dracunculus medinensis, in close proximity to the joint. The patient, a native of Nigeria, presented with chronic right knee pain and swelling. He did well with symptomatic treatment including non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, rest, ice, and elevation of the leg. Dracunculiasis is prevalent in parts of Asia and Africa, but has been described only rarely in the United States.

The clinical, microbiologic, and cytologic features of the guinea pig model of keratoconjunctivitis with enterobacteria, Salmonella typhimurium were elucidated. Guinea pig eyes were instilled with S. typhimurium and the eyes were studied by biomicroscopy, culture, cytology, pathology, and electron microscopy.
