Slow to warm up: the role of habituation in social fear.

Neural habituation allows familiar information to be ignored in favor of salient or novel stimuli. In contrast, failure to rapidly habituate likely reflects deficits in the ability to learn that an environment is predictable, familiar and safe. Differences in habituation rate may underlie individual differences in the tendency to approach or avoid novelty; however, many questions remain unanswered. Given the importance of adaptive social functioning, here we tested whether habituation differences to social stimuli are associated with differences in social fearfulness, a trait that ranges from

Symbolic online exposure for spider fear: habituation of fear, disgust and physiological arousal and predictors of symptom improvement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This research compared the effects of real versus hyper-real images on anxiety, disgust, and physiological arousal during internet-delivered exposure in high spider-fearfuls. Hyper-real images were digitally altered to highlight fearful aspects. A further aim was to examine self-reported and behavioural therapeutic outcomes and exposure-related predictors of these outcomes. METHODS: Twenty-eight females were randomised to real (n = 14) or hyper-real (n = 14) treatment groups and nine participants were subsequently allocated to a wait-list control group. Treatment gr

Psychological Distress and Physiological Reactivity During In Vivo Exposure in People With Aviophobia.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure is regarded to be a crucial component of therapies for phobias. According to emotional processing theory, the success of exposure therapy is predicted by activation of subjective and physiological fear responses and their within-session habituation and between-session adaptation. This study tested this prediction for aviophobia. METHODS: Seventy-nine participants following a highly standardized treatment program for aviophobia provided self-reported and physiological (heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia and pre-ejection period) measurements of fear activation, within

Habituation, sensitization, and emotional valence modulation of pain responses.

The Emotional Controls of Nociception (ECON) paradigm involves the presentation of emotionally-charged pictures during which painful stimuli are delivered. Across several ECON studies, unpleasant pictures enhanced pain and nociception, whereas pleasant pictures inhibited pain and nociception. However, at this time it is unknown whether emotional valence (unpleasant, neutral, pleasant) influences the habituation or sensitization of pain responses that occurs within a testing session. Indeed, ECON assumes that emotional valence modulation of pain is consistent throughout testing; otherwise the i

Patients with painful bladder syndrome have altered response to thermal stimuli and catastrophic reaction to painful experiences.

AIMS: To compare cutaneous sensory thresholds, habituation to somatic stimuli, and tendency towards catastrophic reaction to painful stimuli in patients with Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) to controls without PBS. METHOD: Thermal and vibratory sensory thresholds were established in 11 PBS patients and 10 controls at C5, T1, T12, and S3 dermatomes. Supra-threshold thermal stimuli were then applied at T12 and S3 for 60 sec while patients periodically rated the intensity of stimuli using a visual analog scale. A Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) questionnaire was also completed by all participant

The peeping response of pigeons (Columba livia) to isolation from conspecifics and exposure to a novel environment.

The present study examined the acute behavioral responses of pigeons to separation from conspecifics and exposure to an unfamiliar environment (UE). The effects of (1) repeated exposure to the UE; (2) visual isolation from surroundings, or saline injections; and (3) diazepam treatment (i.p., 0.25, 0.75, 2.5 or 7.5mg/kg) before the trial were also examined. UE exposure evoked intense ballistic head movements (peeping), gradually replaced with angular head movements (AHM), both associated with immobility of the trunk and legs. These behaviors failed to habituate after three trials (7-day intertr

Increased behavioral and histological variability arising from changes in cerebrovascular anatomy of the Mongolian gerbil.

The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) has been used extensively as a model of forebrain ischemia. Its unique susceptibility to ischemia was suggested to be due to an incomplete circle of Willis. The relative ease to which ischemia can be induced combined with highly reproducible delayed CA1 cell death following a 5 min occlusion made the model popular in neuroprotection studies. Presently, this assumption was tested that complete forebrain ischemia occurs in all gerbils because increased variability was noticed in neuronal injury and behavioral outcome using this model in the last sever

The effect of betahistine on vestibular habituation: comparison of rotatory and sway habituation training.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of histaminergic agonists and antagonists on the acquisition of vestibular habituation. The experimental animals, pigeons, were subjected to unilateral rotatory and sway habituation training sessions. The habituation of postural reflexes and post-rotatory head nystagmus was assessed. Vestibular habituation in the control group was achieved by adopting the kinetic reflex posture after approximately 9 training sessions, and after 10 and 14 training sessions, respectively for 50% reduction of the total number of beats (TNB) and the duration of pos

Cutaneous afferents mediating the cutaneous silent period in the upper limbs: evidences for a role of low-threshold sensory fibres.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the contribution of the low-threshold afferents to the production of the cutaneous silent period (CSP) in the upper limbs. METHODS: The CSP was studied in 10 healthy adults and 4 patients with Friedreich's ataxia. The following neurophysiological aspects were studied: (a) relationship between sensory threshold (ST), sensory action potential (SAP) amplitude and CSP parameters; (b) habituation and recovery cycle of the CSP at different stimulus intensities (2xST and 8xST); (c) pattern of responses in distal and proximal muscles at different stimulus intensities (2xST and

The effect of caffeine in animal models of learning and memory.

In the present investigation we studied the effect of caffeine on memory task inhibitory avoidance and habituation to a new environment. Caffeine impaired retention scores in mice submitted to inhibitory avoidance and habituation when administered 30 min before training at the doses of 10-30 mg/kg. These effects cannot be explained by state-dependency since the administration of caffeine 30 min before the test session did not reverse the effect of pre-training caffeine administration, but can more probably be explained by an impairment in the acquisition or by interference with attentional pro

Emotion Regulation in Functional Neurological Disorder: A Multimethod Comparison of Intra- and Interpersonal Strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are frequently reported in individuals with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), yet most evidence derives from self-report data, and little is known about intra- and interpersonal ER preference and success under controlled conditions. METHODS: In a preregistered multimethod investigation, a web-based questionnaire assessed habitual ER difficulties and interpersonal ER in 109 individuals with FND and 88 healthy controls (HC). A laboratory component, conducted in a subsample of the questionnaire participants (33 individuals with FND and 33 HC)

Stress responses and habituation across biological systems: The role of trait and state resilience.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is assumed to shape how individuals respond and adapt to stress, potentially through mechanisms such as habituation to repeated exposure. However, few studies have tested links between self-reported resilience and biological stress regulation in a multisystem framework. Here, we tested whether resilience predicts stress reactivity and habituation across endocrine, autonomic, and subjective domains, and cumulative HPA-axis output. METHODS: Healthy adults (N = 120) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) twice, one week apart. Stress reactivity and habituation were

The common neural parasite Pseudoloma neurophilia is associated with altered startle response habituation in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio): Implications for the zebrafish as a model organism.

The zebrafish's potential as a model for human neurobehavioral research appears nearly limitless despite its relatively recent emergence as an experimental organism. Since the zebrafish has only been part of the research community for a handful of decades, pathogens from its commercial origins continue to plague laboratory stocks. One such pathogen is Pseudoloma neurophilia, a common microparasite in zebrafish laboratories world-wide that generally produces subclinical infections. Given its high prevalence, its predilection for the host's brain and spinal cord, and the delicate nature of neuro

The dynamics of pain: evidence for simultaneous site-specific habituation and site-nonspecific sensitization in thermal pain.

UNLABELLED: Repeated exposure to noxious stimuli changes their painfulness, due to multiple adaptive processes in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Somewhat paradoxically, repeated stimulation can produce an increase (sensitization) or a decrease (habituation) in pain. Adaptation processes may also be body-site-specific or operate across body sites, and considering this distinction may help explain the conditions under which habituation versus sensitization occurs. To dissociate the effects of site-specific and site-nonspecific adaptation processes, we examined reported pain in 100 p

Latent inhibition in an insect: the role of aminergic signaling.

Latent inhibition (LI) is a decrement in learning performance that results from the nonreinforced pre-exposure of the to-be-conditioned stimulus, in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In vertebrates, LI development involves dopamine and serotonin; in invertebrates there is yet no information. We studied differential olfactory conditioning of the proboscis extension response in the honeybee Apis mellifera, and we compared LI in individuals treated with antagonists of biogenic amines (dopamine, octopamine, and serotonin). An antagonist of octopamine receptors and two antagonists of serotonin re

The effect of practice on a sustained attention task in cocaine abusers.

Habituation enables the organism to attend selectively to novel stimuli by diminishing no-longer necessary responses to repeated stimuli. Because the prefrontal cortex (PFC) has a core role in monitoring attention and behavioral control especially under novelty, neural habituation responses may be modified in drug addiction, a psychopathology that entails PFC abnormalities in both structure and function. Sixteen cocaine abusers and 12 gender-, race-, education-, and intelligence-matched healthy control subjects performed an incentive sustained attention task twice, under novelty and after prac

Behavioural responses of dairy cattle to the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, in an open field environment.

Individual cows (25 in each of four herds) were monitored 8-10 times weekly for 12 weeks (stable fly season) on a southern California dairy, with 100 observations per cow. The numbers of biting stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) on the front legs and the frequencies of four fly-repelling behaviours per 2-min observation period [head throws, front leg stamps, skin twitches (panniculus reflex) and tail flicks] were recorded. Fly numbers varied, peaking at 3.0-3.5 flies per leg in week 9 (late May). Weekly herd mean frequencies of fly-repelling behaviours were highly depen

Pharmacology of WEB 1881-FU, a central cholinergic agent, which enhances cognition and cerebral metabolism.

The pharmacological effects of the novel compound WEB 1881 FU (4-amino-methyl-1-benzyl-pyrrolidine-2-one-fumarate) were investigated. The tests performed indicate that the compound has cytoprotective as well as metabolism and cognition enhancing and central cholinomimetic properties. The nootropic effects in all tests were more pronounced than those of piracetam, while the central cholinomimetic effects were generally weaker than those of directly acting cholinomimetic agents. However, the typical peripheral cholinergic side effects were not observed. From the results we believe that the stimu

Validation, reproducibility and safety of trans dermal electrical stimulation in chronic pain patients and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Surrogate pain models have been extensively tested in Normal Human Volunteers (NHV). There are few studies that examined pain models in chronic pain patients. Patients are likely to have altered pain mechanisms. It is of interest to test patient pain responses to selective pain stimuli under controlled laboratory conditions. METHODS: The Institutional Ethic Committee approved the study. 16 patients with chronic neuropathic radiculopathy and 16 healthy volunteers were enrolled to the study after obtaining informed consent. During electrical stimulation (150 minutes for volunteers a
