Neural processing of dynamic emotional facial expressions in psychopaths.

Facial expressions play a critical role in social interactions by eliciting rapid responses in the observer. Failure to perceive and experience a normal range and depth of emotion seriously impact interpersonal communication and relationships. As has been demonstrated across a number of domains, abnormal emotion processing in individuals with psychopathy plays a key role in their lack of empathy. However, the neuroimaging literature is unclear as to whether deficits are specific to particular emotions such as fear and perhaps sadness. Moreover, findings are inconsistent across studies. In the

EEG abnormalities in psychopath and non-psychopath violent offenders.

UNLABELLED: Previous EEG studies attempted to examine violent behavior as homogeneous construct. Up to date, there is no other research studying Low-Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) technique in psychopath offenders. OBJECTIVE: To find electrophysiological differences specifically related to the psychopathy construct and independent of the violent behavior. The current investigation compares the QEEG and the current source density measures of violent psychopath offenders to a non-psychopath violent group. METHODS: The resting EEG activity and LORETA for the EEG spectral f

AP-2-mediated regulation of human NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) gene expression.

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is a flavoprotein that catalyzes two-electron reduction and detoxification of quinones. We have shown previously that twenty-four base pairs of the human Antioxidant Response Element (hARE) mediate basal and xenobiotic-induced expression of the NQO1 gene [Li and Jaiswal, J Biol Chem 267: 15097-15104, 1992]. In the present report, we have characterized a second cis-element, AP-2, at nucleotide position -157 of the human NQO1 gene promotor that regulates basal and cAMP-induced transcription of the NQO1 gene. The NQO1 gene AP-2 mediated expression of the ch

California serogroup viruses in New York State: the role of subtypes in human infections.

The roles of various subtypes of the California serogroup viruses as infectious agents and as neuropathogens were evaluated by using the plaque reduction neutralization test. Sera from 394 patients with central nervous system (CNS) infections during 1971-1982 and from 501 persons without CNS manifestations were studied. Jamestown Canyon (JC) and La Crosse (LAC) viruses were found to have been common infectious agents in New York State for at least 16 years. JC virus was the prevalent indicated agent in patients with antibody to California serogroup viruses in screening tests (62 of 93 cases),

Hepatitis E in Wildlife: Emerging Threats to Human Health.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant public health concern and a leading cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. In recent years, HEV … ified in several other game species, most consistently in red deer, roe deer, and, in some regions, hares and wild rabbits, highlighting food safety risks associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked game meat. In regions such as the Balkans, where hunting activities and handling of wild game are widespread, these practices may further increase …

ATYPICAL CHLAMYDIACEAE IN WILD POPULATIONS OF HAWKS ( BUTEO SPP.) IN CALIFORNIA.

Chlamydiaceae bacteria infect many vertebrate hosts, and previous reports based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and serologic assa … it was most similar (98.6%) to C. psittaci M56, a genotype that is typically found in muskrats and hares. Culture and full genome sequence analysis of Chlamydia spp. isolated from diseased hawks will be necessary to classify this organism and to better understand its epizootiology and potential health impact on wild Buteo populations in California.

The anterior process of the malleus in extant Lagomorpha (Mammalia).

The anterior anchoring of the malleus of 30 extant species of Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares, pikas) has been studied on the basis of histological serial sections and µCT-scans. It is shown that former studies of Oryctolagus, Lepus, and Ochotona are incomplete, because the rostral part of the processus anterior of the malleus is always lacking due to damage of this extremely delicate structure. Our study shows that in perinatal stages of Leporidae the praearticulare develops a prominent processus internus that fits into a groove at the ventral side of the tegmen tympani; this "tongue and groove"-a…

Arboviruses pathogenic for domestic and wild animals.

The objective of this chapter is to provide an updated and concise systematic review on taxonomy, history, arthropod vectors, vertebrate hosts, animal disease, and geographic distribution of all arboviruses known to date to cause disease in homeotherm (endotherm) vertebrates, except those affecting exclusively man. Fifty arboviruses pathogenic for animals have been documented worldwide, belonging to seven families: Togaviridae (mosquito-borne Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan equine encephalilitis viruses; Sindbis, Middelburg, Getah, and Semliki Forest viruses), Flaviviridae (mosquito-borne yel

Exploratory heart rate variability patterns across sleep stages following a 7-day multicomponent mantra-based cognitive intervention: A pilot randomized pre-post controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-contemplative practices could potentially affect autonomic function, but existing research has focused on waking measures of heart rate variability (HRV). It remains unclear whether changes associated with brief interventions differ across sleep stages. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether differences in HRV according to sleep stage would differ in a group undergoing a 7-day, multicomponent, Hare Krishna mantra-based cognitive therapy (HMBCT) intervention compared to a group engaging in their normal routine activities. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy males aged 18-30 years were

Source-based morphometry analyses yield associations between large-scale structural brain networks and psychopathic traits in incarcerated adolescents.

Studies commonly report that youth with elevated psychopathic traits exhibit deficits within limbic and paralimbic regions, including reduced gray matter volume (GMV) in the amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and temporal pole. However, studies have also reported additional structural abnormalities in regions extending beyond limbic and paralimbic regions among youth with elevated psychopathic traits, including the middle frontal gyrus (MFG), inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), precuneus, inferior parietal lobule (IPL), and fusiform gyrus. This suggests youth with elevated psychopathic traits may

Decision Making, Emotion Recognition and Childhood Traumatic Experiences in Murder Convicts Imprisoned with Aggravated Life Sentence: A Prison Study.

INTRODUCTION: Decision-making and emotion recognition are two fundamental themes in social cognition. Disorders in these areas can lead to interpersonal, psychosocial, and legal problems for the individual and society. The likelihood of consequent aggression and crime makes them foci of forensic psychiatry over time. In this study, two developmental disorders that have a clear relationship with crime, that are antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), and psychopathy are investigated for their relationship with these social cognitive deficits. METHODS: The present study involved 23 male prison

Patients' experiences of day surgery and recovery: A meta-ethnography.

AIM: To explore and synthesise findings from qualitative studies on adult patients' experiences of day surgery and the processes of recovery. BACKGROUND: There has been a shift in the practice of elective surgery, from inpatient to ambulatory treatment. Accordingly, more patients are undergoing day surgery and expected to care for themselves at home. To our knowledge, an updated metasynthesis on patients' experiences of day surgery across diverse contexts and continents is lacking. DESIGN: Meta-ethnography. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL were systematically searched for qualitative res

Assessment of psychopathy among justice-involved adult males with low versus average intelligence: Differential links to violent offending.

Psychopathic personality is a multidimensional construct (De Brito et al., 2021) and the dimensions have differential associations with general and violent offending. Impairment in cognitive functioning, particularly intelligence (IQ), is another construct linked to both general and violent offending. However, the evidence is mixed on whether the combination of elevated psychopathy and low IQ increases the risk for violent offending (Hampton et al., 2014; Heilbrun, 1982; Walsh et al., 2004). Also, before this interaction can be firmly established, assessment of whether psychopathic traits are

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder - Parent (PSCD-P): Convergent Validity, Incremental Validity, and Reactions to Unfamiliar Peer Confederates.

Youth who experience psychopathy display multiple impairments across interpersonal (grandiose-manipulative [GM]), affective (callous-unemotional [CU]), lifestyle (daring-impulsive [DI]), and potentially antisocial and behavioral features. Recently, it has been acknowledged that the inclusion of psychopathic features can offer valuable information in relation to the etiology of Conduct Disorder (CD). Yet, prior work largely focuses on the affective component of psychopathy, namely CU. This focus creates uncertainty in the literature on the incremental value of a multicomponent approach to under
