The defense mechanisms of Taeniidae against host immune reaction were reviewed. The parasites may defend themselves from the host's immune attack by: (1)producing specific biochemicals as barriers against the damage caused by immune reactions, (2) changing surface antigens and secreting some active substances that interfere and deconstruct host's immune system and other hazards, (3) self-disguising through synthesizing homologies to host's substances in structure or function in order to avoid the immune surveillance of the host.

Currently, hazard characterization of skin sensitizers is based on data obtained from studies examining single chemicals. Many consumer products, however, contain mixtures of sensitizers that might interact in such a way that the response induced by a substance is higher than predicted in the hazard assessment. To assess interaction of skin sensitizers in a mixture, a dose-response modeling approach is applied. With this approach, it is possible to assess whether or not responses from mixtures of sensitizers can be predicted from the dose-response information obtained from individual chemicals

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health issue in sexual and gender minority people assigned male at birth (SGM-AMAB), with rates at or above those of cisgender women. However, there is little research on how IPV exposure may impact alcohol and drug use (DU) in this population, impeding holistic intervention development. This study investigated whether experiences of IPV lead to higher rates of substance use over time among SGM-AMAB.
METHODS: Data from the RADAR cohort study of Chicago-based SGM-AMAB (n=1,239) were used. Cross-lagged generalized estimating equati

Key characteristics (KCs) are properties of chemicals that are associated with different types of human health hazards. KCs are used for systematic reviews in support of hazard identification. Transcriptomic data are a rich source of mechanistic data and are frequently interpreted through "enriched" pathways/gene sets. Such analyses may be challenging to interpret in regulatory science because of redundancy among pathways, complex data analyses, and unclear relevance to hazard identification. We hypothesized that by cross-mapping pathways/gene sets and KCs, the interpretability of transcriptom

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiologic research shows many environmental chemicals exhibit endocrine disrupting effects on the female reproductive system. Few studies have examined exposure at reproductive organs. Our aim was to perform a preliminary untargeted metabolomic characterization of menstrual blood, a novel biofluid, to identify environmental toxins present in the endometrium and evaluate the suitability of this sample type for exposome research.
METHODS: Whole blood menstrual samples were collected from four women using a menstrual cup. Samples were analyzed for small molecules that incl

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) models are commonly used for risk assessment of emerging contaminants. The objective of this study was to use a toxicity rank order (TRO) as an integrating parameter to improve the toxicity prediction by QSAR models. TRO for each contaminant was calculated from collected toxicity data including acute toxicity concentration and no observed effect concentration. TRO values associated with toxicity mechanisms were used to classify pollutants into three modes of action consisting of narcosis, transition and reactivity. The selection principle of

Of 218 million working children worldwide, many are suspected to be exposed to hazardous chemicals. This review aims to synthesize reported evidence over the last two decades on chemical exposure and adverse health consequences in children labourers in low- and middle-income Countries (LMIC). Included studies investigated health outcomes related to chemical exposures among child labourers aged 5-18 in LMIC. Twenty-three papers were selected for review, focusing on pesticides (n = 5), solvents (n = 3), metals (n = 13) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (n = 2). Adverse health effects iden

BACKGROUND: The concept of chemical agents having properties that confer potential hazard called key characteristics (KCs) was first developed to identify carcinogenic hazards. Identification of KCs of cardiovascular (CV) toxicants could facilitate the systematic assessment of CV hazards and understanding of assay and data gaps associated with current approaches.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a consensus-based synthesis of scientific evidence on the KCs of chemical and nonchemical agents known to cause CV toxicity along with methods to measure them.
METHODS: An expert working group was co

While the etiology of non-familial Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear, there is evidence that increased levels of tissue iron may be a contributing factor. Moreover, exposure to some environmental toxicants is considered an additional risk factor. Therefore, brain-targeted iron chelators are of interest as antidotes for poisoning with dopaminergic toxicants, and as potential treatment of PD. We, therefore, designed a series of small molecules with high affinity for ferric iron and containing structural elements to allow their transport to the brain via the neutral amino acid transporter,

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the gradual loss of articular cartilage and decrease in subchondral space. One of the risk factors Exposure to cadmium (Cd) through tobacco smoke has been identified as a major OA risk factor. There are no reports addressing the role of Cd in OA progression at the molecular level. Our findings revealed that Cd can promote the activation of metalloproteinases (MMP1, MMP3, MMP9 y MMP13), affecting the expression of COL2A1 and ACAN, and decreasing the presence of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans through an inflammatory response related to IL-1β y a IL-6, as well as oxid

Tests for identification of chemical skin sensitisation hazard have been available for decades, evolving from guinea pig assays, through the first validated method, the local lymph node assay, to several validated in vitro methods. These methods successfully identify the hazard for chemicals, with an accuracy in the region of 85%. However, in some regulations, consideration may be given to their application to proteins. Here, the scientific relevance of the use of skin sensitisation tests for the assessment of the allergenic potential of proteins is reviewed and considered in the context of bo

This paper focuses on potential hazards and risks to forensic anthropologists while working in the field and laboratory in North America. Much has changed since Galloway and Snodgrass published their seminal article addressing these issues. The increased number of forensic practitioners combined with new information about potential hazards calls for an updated review of these pathogens and chemicals. Discussion of pathogen hazards (Brucella, Borrelia burgdorferi, Yersinia pestis, Clostridium tetani and West Nile virus) includes important history, exposure routes, environmental survivability, e

The currently available animal-free methods for the detection of skin sensitizing potential of chemicals seem promising. However, no single method is able to comprehensively represent the complexity of the processes involved in skin sensitization. To ensure a mechanistic basis and cover the complexity, multiple methods should be integrated into a testing strategy, in accordance with the adverse outcome pathway that describes all key events in skin sensitization. Although current majority voting testing strategies have proven effective, the performance of individual methods is not taken into ac

As with many aspects of modern industrial society, decision-makers face trade-offs in considering hazardous materials transportation equipment and practices. Tank cars used for transport of hazardous materials can be made more resistant to damage in accidents through use of a thicker steel tank and other protective features. However, the additional weight of these features reduces the car's capacity and thus its efficiency as a transportation vehicle. In this paper the problem of tank car safety versus weight is developed as a multi-attribute decision problem. North American railroads recently

Sulfur dioxide and other sulfur compounds are generated as primary pollutants from the major industries such as sulfuric acid plants, cupper smelters, catalytic cracking units, etc. and cause acid rain. To remove the SO(2) from waste flue gas a three-stage counter-current multi-stage fluidized bed adsorber was developed as desulfurization equipment and operated in continuous bubbling fluidization regime for the two-phase system. This paper represents the desulfurization of gas mixtures by chemical sorption of sulfur dioxide on porous granular calcium oxide particles in the reactor at ambient t
