Assessing the quality of cause of death data in six high-income countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the policy utility of national cause of death (COD) data of six high-income countries with highly developed health information systems. METHODS: National COD data sets from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan and Switzerland for 2015 or 2016 were assessed by applying the ANACONDA software tool. Levels, patterns and distributions of unusable and insufficiently specified "garbage" codes were analysed. RESULTS: The average proportion of unusable COD was 18% across the six countries, ranging from 14% in Australia and Canada to 25% in Japan. Insufficiently specified c…

What the courts need to know about mental health diagnoses of abused women.

Abused women may appear before the courts because of family or criminal matters. It is not uncommon for an abused woman to be diagnosed as having a mental health condition, including a mental disorder. In this paper, we consider the implications of the use of mental health diagnoses in the court system. We discuss the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV and ICD-10 classification systems and examine what other information is needed by the courts to interpret the behaviour and thought processes of abused women. This other information includes: whether the abuse is continuing and the likely impact

Privacy concerns regarding personal health information in Myanmar: A cross-sectional survey in a least developed country.

Protecting personal health information has long been a key ethical concern in healthcare. With the rise of digital health systems, privacy concerns have intensified. In least developed countries like Myanmar, where digital literacy is low, public and governmental awareness of privacy issues is limited, and data protection laws are lacking, the health information privacy area remains largely unaddressed and understudied. This study, therefore, aimed to assess the level of privacy concerns related to personal health information in Myanmar and identify the factors associated with these concerns.

A satellite infrastructure for health early warning in post-disaster health management.

The risk of epidemics and emerging or re-emerging diseases such as avian flu, tuberculosis, malaria and other vector-borne diseases, is rising. These risks can be contained with prevention, early warning, and prompt management. Despite progress in information technology, communication is still a bottleneck for health early warning and response systems in post-disaster situations. This paper presents Satellites for Epidemiology (SAFE), a component-based interoperable architecture for health early warning that employs satellite, radio, and wireless networks, geographic information systems, integ

"The start of something that I hope could be greater": Health information technology tools for social care.

Federal policies and professional guidelines in the United States increasingly encourage and incentivize health systems to collect and meaningfully respond to patients' social risks. In response, many health systems employ health information technology to implement, standardize, and scale these social care activities. We created and evaluated electronic health record tools to support the collection and documentation of social risk information, and the integration of this information into clinical decision-making; the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine labels these activi

Trust in Generative AI for Health Information Consumption and the Effect of Learned Dependency: Randomized Controlled Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly used by health information consumers to interpret medical content and support decision-making. Although these systems provide accessible and timely information, they may also produce inaccurate or misleading outputs. Effective use of GenAI, therefore, depends on users' ability to calibrate trust based on information accuracy. However, little is known about how learned dependency on GenAI (the habitual reliance on AI systems for solving problems) influences trust calibration in health information contexts. OBJECTIVE: This study examines how lea

Occupational hazard incident reporting systems in health facilities across sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational hazards (OH) in healthcare facilities are common, with 1 in 10 healthcare workers experiencing a hazard each year. These hazards can be either biological, chemical, ergonomic, or radiation. Despite their occurrence, reporting of these hazards remains limited, with very little information available, especially from healthcare facilities. Also, there is limited information on incident reporting systems (IRSs), which can help capture, track, and monitor the occurrence of these hazards within health facilities. The absence of these systems results in inaccurate and incom

Interactions between Global Health Initiatives and country health systems: the case of a neglected tropical diseases control program in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Recently, a number of Global Health Initiatives (GHI) have been created to address single disease issues in low-income countries, such as poliomyelitis, trachoma, neonatal tetanus, etc.. Empirical evidence on the effects of such GHIs on local health systems remains scarce. This paper explores positive and negative effects of the Integrated Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Control Initiative, consisting in mass preventive chemotherapy for five targeted NTDs, on Mali's health system where it was first implemented in 2007. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Campaign processes and interactions wit

Septic systems as potential pollution sources in the Cannonsville Reservoir Watershed, New York.

On-site septic systems require appropriate soil characteristics to provide effective wastewater treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate siting practices and treatment efficacy of on-site septic systems within the Cannonsville Reservoir watershed (115900 ha) in the state of New York. Using digital soil survey data, a database of on-site conditions was developed from more than 1100 existing septic system siting records. Soil map units were grouped into four classes based on their suitability to meet common septic system design criteria. A geographic information system was found to

Filling in the gaps: A geospatial approach to optimizing placement of methadone clinics in Massachusetts.

INTRODUCTION: Methadone treatment dispensed at opioid treatment programs (OTPs) reduces the risk of fatal opioid-related overdose. Access to OTPs is limited in many regions. We utilized location-allocation models to identify gaps in OTP services across Massachusetts and generated descriptive statistics to further prioritize areas for expansion of services for socially vulnerable communities. METHODS: We used a geographic information system to generate eight location-allocation models, tools to target the placement of new sites based on the distribution of existing sites and demand for service

Assessing correlations between geological hazards and health outcomes: Addressing complexity in medical geology.

BACKGROUND: The field of medical geology addresses the relationships between exposure to specific geological characteristics and the development of a range of health problems: for example, long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water can result in the development of skin conditions and cancers. While these relationships are well characterised for some examples, in others there is a lack of understanding of the specific geological component(s) triggering disease onset, necessitating further research. OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to highlight several important complexities in geological expos

Computerized tracking for newborn screening and follow-up: a review.

In the third decade of newborn screening for phenylketonuria (PKU) and other disorders computers are being used increasingly for both the laboratory and the follow-up aspects of screening programs. In 1984 slightly less than 40% of the state programs had automated follow-up. Lack of funding is probably the major inhibitor of more widespread use of computers in tracking newborns through the newborn screening process. It is suggested that federal funds be made available to ensure wider distribution of currently used tracking systems and development of methods for tracking newborns from birth thr
