Patient experiences with isolated limb perfusion for malignant melanoma - A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: In recent years, the incidence of malignant melanoma has rapidly increased worldwide. Among patients with recurrences, approximately 5% develop in-transit metastases, which can potentially be treated with isolated limb perfusion (ILP). However, little is known about patient experiences with this treatment. A more thorough understanding might guide future research and clinical care. In this study, we aimed to describe patients' experiences of ILP treatment. METHODS: This study included eight patients who participated in a semi-structed interviewed, conducted at one occasion between 3

Joint association of carrying HLA-B*13:01 gene and human herpesvirus-6 with occupational trichloroethylene hypersensitivity syndrome.

PURPOSE: Occupational trichloroethylene hypersensitivity syndrome (OTHS) clinically manifests as generalized severe rash resembling drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) and afflicts predominantly HLA-B*13:01 gene carriers after their exposure to trichloroethylene. Meanwhile, OTHS may also be associated with human herpesvirus such as herpesvirus-6 (HHV6) and cytomegalovirus (HCMV) reported to participate in the pathology of DIHS. This study explored the association of carrying HHV6 and HCMV, and the joint association of carrying HLA-B*13:01 and HHV6 and HCMV with OTHS. METHODS: We rec

New approaches to non-surgical sterilization for dogs and cats: Opportunities and challenges.

Over the last 40 years, researchers have explored methods to non-surgically suppress fertility in animals. Immunocontraception has been used to control wildlife populations but does not confer long-term immunity. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist deslorelin, formulated as an implant to provide 6-month to 1-year suppression of fertility in male dogs, is available commercially in some countries. Neither of these approaches provide permanent sterility. A single-dose, permanent treatment would be a valuable tool in dog and cat population control. The Michelson Prize and Grants (MPG

Antibody responses to influenza viruses in paediatric patients and their contacts at the onset of the 2009 pandemic in Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: On April 2009, the Mexican Ministry of Health received notification of cases of severe pneumonia mostly affecting young healthy people; this was the beginning of the first influenza pandemic of the 21st century. The nature of the immune response to the influenza A(H1N1)2009 pandemic strain in Mexico at the beginning of the pandemic outbreak has not been completely defined. We describe the serological response to the 2009 pandemic influenza virus in paediatric patients with influenza-like illness, their household contacts (HHCs), and exposed health-care workers (HCWs) at the begin

Scapular kinematics and muscle activities during pushing tasks.

OBJECTIVES: Pushing tasks are functional activities of daily living. However, shoulder complaints exist among workers exposed to regular pushing conditions. It is crucial to investigate the control of shoulder girdles during pushing tasks. The objective of the study was to demonstrate scapular muscle activities and motions on the dominant side during pushing tasks and the relationship between scapular kinematics and muscle activities in different pushing conditions. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults were recruited to push a four-wheel cart in six pushing conditions. The electromyographic signals

Healthy Living Partnerships to Prevent Diabetes: recruitment and baseline characteristics.

Healthy Living Partnerships to Prevent Diabetes (HELP PD) is a randomized controlled trial designed to translate the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle intervention into a community setting using community health workers engaged through an existing Diabetes Care Center (DCC). Overweight and obese (BMI 25-40 kg/m²) individuals with pre-diabetes (fasting blood glucose 95-125 mg/dl) with no medical contraindications to participate in a lifestyle intervention were recruited for participation in this study. Standard recruitment strategies were employed, including mass mailing, direct provi

Influenza vaccination in the emergency department: are our patients at risk?

BACKGROUND: Influenza is responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality annually. Vaccination strategies target high-risk patients. The percentage of Emergency Department (ED) patients at high risk is largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: The percentage of patients at high risk for influenza was determined and compared to the United States (US) population. METHODS: Medical records of a convenience sample of all patients presenting to the ED of a university-affiliated hospital in Tucson, Arizona from February 1-7, 2006 were reviewed (n = 1359). Patients were stratified as 1) at high risk for infl

Advancing employee engagement through a healthy workplace strategy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been increased focus on improving the quality of the working lives of staff in health care organizations. Research shows that improvements can be achieved through a comprehensive organizational approach to workplace health. Improved worker engagement is a realizable outcome of such an approach, provided that it is based on reliable and relevant data and is tailored to the specific environment in which it is being implemented. ASSESSMENT OF PROBLEM: An intervention project was designed to develop an organization-wide approach to employee workplace health.

Rethinking political correctness.

Legal and cultural changes over the past 40 years ushered unprecedented numbers of women and people of color into companies' professional ranks. Laws now protect these traditionally underrepresented groups from blatant forms of discrimination in hiring and promotion. Meanwhile, political correctness has reset the standards for civility and respect in people's day-to-day interactions. Despite this obvious progress, the authors' research has shown that political correctness is a double-edged sword. While it has helped many employees feel unlimited by their race, gender, or religion, the PC rule b

Who's there and who cares: age as an indicator of social support networks for caregivers among people living with motor neurone disease.

This paper explores the social support networks available to the informal carers of people living with motor neurone disease (MND). An ethnographic case study was undertaken using eco mapping, observation and conversational interviews to collect data from 18 primary carers of people living with MND. Interviews took place in participants' homes in metropolitan, regional and rural locations. Participants discussed the content of their support network and drew lines between individuals to indicate the type and strength of relationship. Changes to the network were depicted on eco maps during subse

Additive impairment of the barrier function by mechanical irritation, occlusion and sodium lauryl sulphate in vivo.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between potential irritants in the workplace might be important because workers are not usually exposed to a single irritant, but to multiple potentially harmful substances. Physical irritant contact dermatitis caused by friction or mechanical abrasion is a common occupational dermatosis. Prolonged water exposure by occlusion is also common in the workplace. Several studies have revealed the negative effect of the common anionic detergent sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) on permeability barrier function. OBJECTIVES: To study the additive impairment of permeability barr

Lymphocyte proliferative response to rabies virus antigen.

Rabies virus (RV) infection, as well as active immunisation using viral antigen, elicit both humoral and cellular reactions whose protective effects are still unclear. We evaluated both responses in order to find valuable monitoring parameters for the immunisation procedure. Three laboratory workers repetitively immunised with booster human diploid cell vaccine against rabies virus, 13 patients from the anti-rabies centre (vaccinated for the first time) and 10 healthy volunteers (not immunised nor exposed to rabies virus antigen), were monitored for: (i) in vivo RV-specific antibody production

Association between hypertension awareness and preventive health behaviors among healthcare workers: evidence from the SHAHWAR study.

INTRODUCTION: Current evidence does not clearly support an association between hypertension awareness and improved cardiovascular outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between awareness of high blood pressure and adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors among healthcare workers (HCWs) in Iran. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 1,178 HCWs enrolled in the SHAHWAR cohort study. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure assessments, structured health interviews, and physical examinations were conducted by trained investigators. Multivariable logistic regression

Low self-esteem in adolescents with sickle cell disease: Determinants and coping mechanisms; A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a chronic genetic condition affecting approximately 112 per 100,000 live births globally, with adolescents being particularly vulnerable. Beyond its physical burden, SCD can significantly impact adolescents' mental health, particularly self-esteem. While positive coping strategies can mitigate these effects, data on self-esteem among adolescents with SCD in Uganda remain limited. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, associated factors, and coping mechanisms of low self-esteem among adolescents with SCD attending the Sickle Cell C

Controlling Chronic Diseases and Acute Infections with Vitamin D Sufficiency.

Apart from developmental disabilities, the prevalence of chronic diseases increases with age especially in those with co-morbidities: vitamin D deficiency plays a major role in it. Whether vitamin D deficiency initiates and/or aggravates chronic diseases or vice versa is unclear. It adversely affects all body systems but can be eliminated using proper doses of vitamin D supplementation and/or safe daily sun exposure. Maintaining the population serum 25(OH)D concentration above 40 ng/mL (i.e., sufficiency) ensures a sound immune system, minimizing symptomatic diseases and reducing infections an

Intermittent nasal carriage with Staphylococcus aureus within a menstrual cycle: Results from a prospective cohort of healthy carriers.

Female sex hormones have been related to nasal Staphylococcus aureus carriage in healthy individuals; however, whether nasal staphylococcal carriage varies by menstrual cycle phase remains unknown. We sampled anterior nares of female healthcare workers twice per week for 6 consecutive menstrual cycles. We used mixed-effects Poisson regression models to determine whether intermittent carriage was associated with cycle phases in a given individual. We also performed recurrent event survival analysis to identify host factors linked to incident carriage status.Overall, we collected 754 nasal swabs
