BACKGROUND: Occupational activities performed by sound engineers are associated with hearing loss. However, there is a dearth of research on the hearing functions and the related hearing loss for sound engineers.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the hearing function and early effects of noise on the hearing ability of sound engineers, and to establish whether there are hearing conservation programmes (HCPs) available for sound engineer participants in Johannesburg.
METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used. Eight sound engineers from the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) participated

OBJECTIVES: Despite extensive evidence supporting the benefits of hearing treatments for individuals affected by hearing loss, many leave their hearing issues unaddressed. This underscores the need to better understand the individual factors influencing decision-making regarding hearing loss treatments. One consideration regarding the low uptake of treatment is the finding that the subjective impact of hearing loss is greater for some individuals than for others, yielding a significant discrepancy between subjective measures of hearing loss (e.g., self-report hearing-handicap scales) and objec

Most of the previous studies have marked hearing loss as another complication of diabetes mellitus, while some other authors had different ideas. The relation between diabetes mellitus and sensorineural hearing loss has been under investigation for a century. However, it has remained controversial. Changing in the metabolism of glucose alters inner ear function and leads to hearing and vestibular disorders. We performed a study on type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency and with normal levels of vitamin D in an attempt to find out the prevalence of

Hearing aids have improved speech intelligibility but not speech emotion perception in older adults with hearing loss. Hearing loss has also been linked to altered brain responses to emotional non-speech sounds, potentially contributing to the speech emotion perception deficits even under aided listening. While fMRI requires hearing aid removal due to metal incompatibility, fNIRS is silent and hearing-aid compatible, creating a novel opportunity to identify neural processes during aided listening. We leveraged fNIRS to examine how hearing aids affect brain function in experienced hearing-aid u

The cochlear and vestibular functions were investigated in a sample of 36 patients with unilateral Meniere's disease. Caloric reactions and hearing thresholds were compared separately at several frequencies. A topodiagnostic relationship between the cochlear and vestibular function was discovered. Using four qualitative categories, a significantly high correlation was obtained between the basal hearing loss (4000 Hz) and unilateral weakness, whereas no correlation was obtained when evaluating the more apical hearing loss (lower frequencies 250-1 000 Hz). A normal caloric reaction can be reason

INTRODUCTION: Hearing is essential for humans to communicate with one another. Early diagnosis of hearing loss and intervention in neonates and infants can reduce developmental problems. The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of hearing impairment in newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and analyze the associated risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of hearing loss in neonates who were admitted to the NICU at Nemazee Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences between January 2006 an

Paediatric cancer patients receiving platinum-based chemotherapy are at high risk of ototoxicity, often resulting in irreversible hearing loss. In South Africa, where healthcare resources are limited, routine audiological monitoring for this vulnerable population remains challenging, potentially leading to undiagnosed and untreated hearing impairments. To investigate hearing function in paediatric patients with cancer in South Africa. A descriptive, retrospective record review was conducted using patient data from two tertiary hospitals in Johannesburg: Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital

UNLABELLED: The functional disorders of the masticatory organ are the third stomatological disease to be considered a populational disease due to its chronicity and widespread prevalence. Otolaryngological symptoms are a less common group of dysfunction symptoms, including sudden hearing impairment or loss, ear plugging sensation and earache, sore and burning throat, difficulties in swallowing, tinnitus, and vertigo. The diagnostic and therapeutic problems encountered in patients with the functional disorders of the masticatory organ triggered our interest in conducting retrospective studies w

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine if and how hearing loss leads to loneliness in older adults.
DESIGN: We examined data from wave 5 (2013, n = 66.188) and wave 6 (2015, n = 68.186) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement which is a cross-national panel database of older adults from 27 European countries and Israel. Hearing abilities were self-rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "excellent" to "poor." Analyses included longitudinal models, as well as mediation analysis to examine indirect effects.
RESULTS: Poor hearing was reported by 3.8% of participa

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate the functions of the vestibular, tactile, visual, and proprioceptive modalities in children with prelinguistic hearing loss. Specifically, the study sought to examine evidence for the compensation hypothesis (auditory deprivation leads to enhancements in functions of other sensory systems) versus the deficiency hypothesis (functions of the spared senses are compromised as a result of auditory deprivation).
METHODS: Twelve children between the ages of 5 years, 1 month and 8 years, 11 months with bilateral severe-profound hearing loss par

INTRODUCTION: The majority of patients still lose the functionality of their hearing in spite of the technical advances in microsurgery. Our aim was to evaluate the hearing preservation potential of Gamma Knife Surgery. We have reviewed our experience and the literature in order to evaluate the probability to obtain such functional preservation and the factors influencing it.
METHODS: Since July 1992, 2,053 patients have been operated on by Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in Timone University Hospital. This population included 184 unilateral schwannoma patients with functional preoperative hearing (

Abstract Usage of the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) with round window (RW)-Coupler placement at the RW has been shown to successfully treat mixed hearing loss. Coupling between the VSB's floating mass transducer (FMT) and the RW membrane is difficult in the case of sclerosis in the RW and drilling down the bony lip until the RW membrane can be seen completely can possibly induce a perilymphatic fistula. A 68-year-old woman who had bilateral mixed hearing loss with sclerosis in the RW due to tympanosclerosis underwent a RW-Vibroplasty with a RW-Coupler. Speech discrimination scores in quiet and noi

BACKGROUND: Pendred-syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease that is classically characterised by sensorineural hearing loss and enlargement of the thyroid gland. The gene SLC26A4/PDS for the pendred-syndrome has been localised by linkage analysis on chromosome 7q31. This protein is expressed in the inner ear, thyroid gland, kidney and placenta. Functional analysis in Xenopus laevis oocytes revealed that it acts as an iodide/chloride and chloride/formate exchanger.
METHOD: Each of the exons and flanking splice regions of the SLC26A4/PDS gene was analysed by direct sequencing.
RESULTS: In t

Growth of masking for OFF-frequency conditions (probe frequency above the masker spectrum) and ON-frequency conditions (probe within the masker spectrum) was investigated using simultaneous masking in three subjects with normal hearing and nine subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Growth-of-masking functions (probe thresholds as a function of masker intensity) for OFF-frequency conditions were obtained for probe tones placed at six frequencies above a 200-Hz-wide masker with an upper edge at 520 Hz. Growth-of-masking functions for ON-frequency conditions were obtained for p

Cisplatin has been associated with hearing damage. It is usually irreversible, bilateral, and characterized by high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. This study was carried out to identify impairment of hearing function in children and adolescents with cancer after cisplatin therapy. Twenty-three survivors of childhood cancer treated with cisplatin at our Unit from 1991 to 2004 performed tympanometry, pure tone audiometry, transient otoacoustic emissions, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). The median age at diagnosis was 12.3 years and the median total dose of cisplatin

The widely used chemotherapy cisplatin causes permanent hearing loss in 40%-60% of patients with cancer. One drug, sodium thiosulfate, is approved by the FDA for use in pediatric patients with localized solid tumors for preventing cisplatin-induced hearing loss, but more drugs are desperately needed. Here, we tested dabrafenib, an FDA-approved BRAF kinase inhibitor and anticancer drug, in a clinically relevant multidose cisplatin mouse model. The protective effects of dabrafenib, given orally twice daily with cisplatin, were determined by functional hearing tests and cochlear outer hair cell c

A group of 199 children and adolescents (153 boys, 46 girls) with autistic disorder was audiologically evaluated. Mild to moderate hearing loss was diagnosed in 7.9% and unilateral hearing loss in 1.6% of those who could be tested appropriately. Pronounced to profound bilateral hearing loss or deafness was diagnosed in 3.5% of all cases, representing a prevalence considerably above that in the general population and comparable to the prevalence found in populations with mental retardation. Hearing deficits in autism occurred at similar rates at all levels of intellectual functioning, so it doe

How does the auditory function of children with congenital Zika syndrome present during the first three years of life? To determine the auditory function of children with congenital Zika syndrome during the first three years of life and estimate the frequency and long-term presentation of hearing loss in this syndrome, an auditory assessment with screening and diagnostic tests was conducted. The screening test consisted of measuring the short latency ABR using click stimuli. If the ABR click indicated hearing loss, confirmation was obtained with a frequency-specific ABR (FS-ABR), in which the

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether children with severe hearing loss (HL) who use hearing aids (HAs) may experience added value in the perception of speech, language development, and executive function (EF) compared to children who are hard of hearing (HH) or children who are deaf and who use cochlear implants (CIs) and would benefit from CIs over HAs. The results contribute to the ongoing debate concerning CI criteria. We addressed the following research question to achieve this aim: Do children who are HH or deaf with CIs perform better than children with severe HL with HAs with respe
