Chronic dietary intake of plant-derived anthocyanins protects the rat heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Consumption of flavonoid-rich foods and beverages is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Whereas the biological activities of flavonoids have been characterized in vitro, there are no clear experimental data demonstrating that chronic dietary intake and intestinal absorption of flavonoids actually protects the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury. We tested whether long-term consumption of specific flavonoids (anthocyanins) included in normal food could render the heart of rats more resistant to myocardial infarction. Maize kernels that differed specifically in their ac

[Instigating effect of shock heart on the injury to the liver, kidney and intestine at early stage of severe burn in rat].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the instigating effect of "shock heart" on injury to liver, kidney and intestine at early stage of severe burn in rat. METHODS: Fifty-six healthy male Wistar rats were enrolled in the study and randomly divided into normal control (n=8, without treatment, NC) and burn (n=48, inflicted with 30% TBSA full-thickness scald, B) groups. The rats in B group were intraperitoneally injected with Ringer's lactate solution (4 ml x kg(-1) x 1% TBSA(-1) 30 minutes after burn following the Parkland formula, and they were observed at 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, 24.0 post-burn hour (P

Dextran sulfate as a leukocyte-endothelium adhesion molecule inhibitor of lung injury in pediatric open-heart surgery.

BACKGROUND: In spite of the progress in operative techniques and pre- and postoperative management for congenital heart disease, lung injury induced by the extracorporeal circulation is still a serious insult in pediatric open-heart operations. To prevent this injury, we used a leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion molecule blocking agent, dextran sulfate, in a clinical setting. METHODS: Sixty mg/kg of dextran sulfate (DS) was intravenously infused to the patients just before cardiopulmonary bypass was started and 600 mg was added to the bypass circuit prime. Thirty patients (DS group, 14 patie

Long-term infusion of Met5-enkephalin fails to protect murine hearts against ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Recently, we reported that exogenous administration of Met(5)-enkephalin (ME) for 24 h reduces infarct size after ischemia-reperfusion in rabbits. In the present study, we tested whether ME-induced cardioprotection is exhibited in murine hearts and whether chronic infusion of this peptide can render hearts tolerant to ischemia. Barbiturate-anesthetized open-chest mice (C57BL/6J) were subjected to regional myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (45 min of occlusion and 20 min of reperfusion). Mice received saline vehicle or ME for 24 h or 2 wk before undergoing regional myocardial ischemia-reperfusion

Autonomic control of the heart and renal vascular bed during autonomic dysreflexia in high spinal cord injury.

Autonomic function and hemodynamics were studied in nine spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects, at rest and during peripheral afferent stimulation, bladder percussion. Nine able-bodied subjects were studied for comparison during unstimulated conditions. Spontaneous baroreceptor reflex sensitivity was calculated from recordings of ECG and intraarterial blood pressure. An index of sympathetic activity was provided by measuring total body noradrenaline (NA) spillover by isotope dilution technique. Renal vascular resistance was calculated from PAH-clearance.SCI subjects had lower total body NA spillo

A glial-derived protein, S100B, in neonates and infants with congenital heart disease: evidence for preexisting neurologic injury.

UNLABELLED: The glial-derived protein S100B is a serum marker of cerebral ischemia and correlates with negative neurological outcome after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in adults. We sought to characterize the S100B release pattern before and after CPB in neonates and infants with congenital heart disease and correlate it with surgical mortality. Serum was collected before surgery and at 24 postoperative h from 109 neonates and infants with congenital heart disease. All patients had presurgical transthoracic echocardiograms and CPB with or without hypothermic circulatory arrest. S100B concentra

Type and extent of myocardial injury related to brain damage and its significance in heart transplantation: a morphometric study.

BACKGROUND: Focal myocardial necrosis reported in patients who died of brain lesions and in donor hearts soon after insertion has been attributed to catecholamine-related injury induced before operation, or in the perioperative period. Interpretation of the morphofunctional type of myocardial injury observed and its quantification may help understand both its pathophysiology and clinical relevance. METHODS: In 27 patients without heart disease who died of intracranial brain hemorrhage after berry aneurysm rupture, terminal clinical signs were correlated with the presence of absence of myocard

Environmental Exposures Influence Fetal Brain Growth and Risk of Neonatal Brain Injury in Congenital Heart Disease.

Neurodevelopmental impairments are common in congenital heart disease (CHD) and fetal brain volume is an important predictor of outcomes. Social determinants of health (SDOH) and environmental factors influence brain growth in other populations and likely play a neurodevelopmental role in CHD. This study evaluated the influence of SDOH and environmental factors on fetal and neonatal brain volume, growth, and risk of brain injury in CHD. This prospective single-center longitudinal cohort study enrolled fetuses with severe CHD to undergo third-trimester fetal and preoperative brain MRIs. Control

Pentose phosphate pathway-derived NADPH facilitates physiological hypertrophy and alleviates ischemia-reperfusion injury in the heart.

Exercise promotes physiological cardiomyocyte growth and protects against ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury in the heart. The molecular mechanism by which exercise benefits cardiac metabolism and function remains largely unknown. Here, using a genetically encoded fluorescent sensor, we show that exercise increases cytosolic, but not mitochondrial, NADPH levels in cardiomyocytes. This effect is mediated by activation of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Inhibition of PPP activity or depletion of cytosolic NADPH attenuates exercise-induced heart hypertrophy in mice. We observe that NADPH prom

Nanoparticle-Based Therapies for Myocardial Injury and Heart Failure: A Systematic Review and Translational Appraisal of Preclinical Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and current therapies rarely repair established myocardial damage. Nanoparticle-based interventions have been investigated across heterogeneous models of myocardial injury, remodeling, cardiomyopathy, and heart failure, but the distribution and translational maturity of this evidence remain unclear. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted from database inception to June 2024. Eligible reports were mapped according to disease model, experimental system, carrier-level n

Preoperative renal functional reserve as a predictor of acute kidney injury in young adults with congenital heart disease.

Due to advances in medical and surgical care, there are more adults than children living with congenital heart disease (CHD). Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication following cardiac surgery in patients with CHD, with creatinine lacking sensitivity for early detection. Renal functional reserve (RFR), the kidney's capacity to increase filtration under stress, has emerged as a potential predictor of AKI. Our primary study objective was to evaluate whether preoperative RFR, using both creatinine clearance (CrCl) and cystatin C estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) methods, predi

A Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation and reduced heart rate variability (HRV), potentially affecting cognition. This study tested whether HRV biofeedback (HRV-B) improved resting HRV and stress recovery in individuals with TBI compared to sham control. We also examined whether HRV changes related to physical symptoms, emotional well-being, cognitive performance, and adherence. Fifty-eight participants with TBI enrolled; 49 completed the study (HRV-B: 25, mean age 27.1; sham: 24, mean age 26.6). Participants attended five weekly sess
