Analysis of clinical presentation, hematological factors, self-reported bed net usage, and malaria burden in sickle cell disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a severe monogenic disorder, caused by single nucleotide mutations in the hemoglobin (Hb) gene, that is prevalent in malaria endemic regions of the world. Sickle cell trait (SCT) individuals carry only one of the mutated alleles and were shown to be protected against malaria. However, defining the relative contribution of hematological, clinical, and environmental factors to the overall burden of malaria in individuals with hemoglobinopathies such as SCA has been challenging. METHODS: We hypothesized that hematological differences, clinical presentation

Acute hepatitis: a rare complication of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection.

Infectious Mononucleosis (IM), a benign lymphoproliferative disease, is the best known clinical syndrome caused by Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). It usually resolves over a period of weeks or months without sequelae but may occasionally be complicated by a wide variety of neurologic, hematologic, hepatic, respiratory, and psychological complications. In this report we describe a patient with acute hepatitis following EBV-IM in a previously healthy woman. A 26-year-old woman who presented with fever, generalized weakness, nausea, sore throat, yellowing of skin, and a generalized skin rash was admitt

Prevalence and associations of anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin antibodies with clinical phenotypes in patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome: aPS/PT antibodies in primary antiphospholipid syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical significance of anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is still controversial. We assessed the prevalence of aPS/PT antibodies, their association with other anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) and with different APS clinical phenotypes. METHODS: We included 95 primary APS patients according to the Sydney classification criteria, and patients with thrombocytopenia and/or hemolytic anemia who also fulfilled the serological APS criteria. We tested aCL, anti-β2GP-I and aPS/PT antibodies (both IgG and IgM isotypes) and lupus anticoagu

Seasonal Distribution, Virus-Specific Hematologic Profiles, and Predictors of Hospitalization in Children with Respiratory Viral Infections.

Background: Respiratory viral infections are a major cause of morbidity in children worldwide; however, several aspects remain incompletely understood. In particular, hematological changes associated with specific viral pathogens are not well defined, and their potential diagnostic value remains uncertain. In addition, the seasonal distribution of respiratory viruses may vary between years and geographical regions Methods: This retrospective study analyzed pediatric patients presenting to the outpatient clinics at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital between September 2024 and May 2025 who underwent m

Anticoagulation during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A narrative review.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a technology that offers organ support for critically ill patients with respiratory and/or cardiac failure. Despite improvements in recent years in technology and the biocompatibility of circuits, patients on ECMO remain at high risk of hematologic complications, such as bleeding or thrombosis. Anticoagulation is required in most cases to limit the risk of clotting, but questions persist regarding the optimal anticoagulation strategy. More precisely, there is still debate around the best anticoagulation agent and monitoring tools as well as on the

Acute Acalculous Cholecystitis in Hospitalized Patients With Hematologic Malignancies and Prognostic Importance of Gallbladder Ultrasound Findings.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with hematologic malignancies, especially those with acute disease or those receiving intense chemotherapy, are known to develop acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of the established ultrasound (US) diagnostic criteria for AAC in patients with acute hematologic malignancies who were clinically suspected to have AAC. METHODS: We retrospectively studied the US findings of the gallbladder in patients with hematologic malignancies and correlated these findings with the duration of clinical symptoms,

A Review of Systemic Hematological Manifestations and Stent Thrombosis.

Stent thrombosis (ST) has significant morbidity and mortality following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). ST is uncommon making the identification of nonprocedural predictors challenging. Numerous case reports of ST in both benign and malignant hematological conditions exist. Given ST could be a Herald event of an undiagnosed condition and condition-specific treatment may be available, it is important to consider specialist testing in an unexplained ST. This review included a case presentation of ST in previously undiagnosed paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and a literature re

Point-of-care diagnostics for invasive aspergillosis: nearing the finish line.

INTRODUCTION: The spectrum of disease caused by Aspergillus spp. is dependent on the immune system of the host, with invasive aspergillosis (IA) its most severe manifestation. Early and reliable diagnosis of Aspergillus disease is important to decrease associated morbidity and mortality from IA. AREAS COVERED: The following review searched Pub Med for literature published since 2007 and will give an update on the current point-of-care diagnostic strategies for the diagnosis of IA, discuss needed areas of improvement for these tests, and future directions. EXPERT OPINION: Several new diagnost

Effects of Exercise-Diet Therapy on Cognitive Function in Healthy Elderly People Evaluated by Deep Learning Based on Basic Blood Test Data.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reported that vascular cognitive impairment in the elderly caused by arteriosclerosis plays an important role in cognitive disorders in both vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, systemic metabolic disorders such as oxygen metabolism dysfunction could be risk of dementia. Based on these findings, we have developed a deep neural network-based screening test (DNN-based test) of cognitive function using basic blood test data, which allowed prediction of cognitive function expressed by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. AIM: Here, we investig

A case of Berardinelli-Seip syndrome presenting with cirrhosis.

Berardinelli-Seip congenital lipodystrophy (BSCL) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of generalised lipoatrophy, characterised by the absence of functioning adipocytes, with lipid being stored in muscles, the liver and the pancreas. The usual presentation is in adulthood, with manifestations of insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridaemia and liver steatosis. Cirrhosis as the first presentation of BSCL in a young adult is rare. We describe a patient with BSCL presenting with cirrhosis. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of BSCL reported in a Sri Lankan patient.
