BACKGROUND: The main goal of newborn screening (NBS) for sickle cell disease (SCD) is to detect affected neonates so that specific preventive care can be implemented. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) used for NBS has high sensitivity and specificity, but we lack guidelines for quantitative hemoglobin (Hb) fraction interpretation. The nutritional status of 101 institutionalized students aged 6 to 13 was assessed from the dietary and biochemical points of view. The children were pupils of a Youth Care Boarding School. Sickle cell trait is associated with an increased incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria, low birth weight infants and premature rupture of membranes. Hemoglobin SS and hemoglobin SC in pregnancy result in significantly increased maternal morbidity and mortality and reproductive wastage. Heterozygous thalassemias in pregnancy carry increased risks but to a lesser degree than hemoglobins SS and SC. Partial exchange transfusion can provide effective prophylaxis for many of the maternal and fetal problems of sickle cell disease.

The haemoglobin-genotype of women attending six family planning clinics in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria in a 16-month period was determined. Women with haemoglobinopathy S and C (Hb SS, SC and AC), in spite of the greater risks associated with pregnancy in them, were found to use the services of the family planning clinics less than others (Hb AA and AS) in the population. Women with Hb AA or Hb AS on different contraceptives had similar levels of erythrocyte packed cell volume except that reduced levels were observed in Hb AS acceptors on oral contraceptives not containing an iron supplement.
