Dyadic Associations between Body Appreciation and Sexual Function among Cisgender Heterosexual and Gender and Sexually Diverse Couples.

Given the body's exposure during partnered sexual activity, having a positive perception of one's body may impact sexual function, i.e., the capacity to respond sexually. Yet research on the associations between body appreciation and sexual function within couples is limited, particularly among couples who identify as gender and sexually diverse, who face greater risks of experiencing sexual difficulties due to minority stress. Examining body appreciation among couples may lead to clearer insights into their sexual function. The present study assessed dyadic associations between body appreciat

Prevalence and co-occurrence of sexually transmitted infections among heterosexual couples in southern Uganda: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Partner-level sexually transmitted infection (STI) data from eastern Africa are rare, despite high STI burden. To address this gap, we examined STI prevalence and clustering among cohabiting couples in two high HIV-burden Ugandan communities, representing the largest population-based, couple-level STI study in the region. METHODS: We analysed data from the Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence Study (STIPS), a cross-sectional, population-based study in southern Uganda which tested participants for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, syphilis, high-titre syphilis and herpes simp

Heterosexual 'situationships' and HIV exposure for sexual and gender minority persons assigned female at birth in the Western Kenyan context.

Sexual and gender minority persons assigned female at birth (hereafter referred to as lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, intersex, gender non-conforming, non-binary and other sexual and gender minority persons, or LBQT+ persons) experience extreme vulnerabilities to negative sexual health outcomes due to intersectional stigma in the Western Kenyan context. To navigate the structural violence created by this intersectional stigma, many LBQT+ persons manoeuvre heterosexual 'situationships', or relationships with cis-gender men. While such relationships help them to navigate economic inequali

Predicting the Use of Sexually Coercive Strategies in Young Heterosexual Men: Combining the Dual Control Model with the Confluence Model.

Sexual aggression is a widespread problem that despite increased prevention efforts remains highly prevalent. Although research has focused on a myriad of predictors of sexual aggression perpetration, basic sexual processes, related to sexual motivation and response, have as yet not been studied extensively. The current study examined the value of combining factors from two theoretical models that have been associated with sexual aggression perpetration, the confluence model and the dual control model of sexual response. A total of 619 heterosexual men (M age = 22.50 years, SD = 3.40) complete

Identification of an Emerging HIV-1B/C Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF176_BC) in Heterosexual Populations in Yunnan Province, China.

The current HIV-1 epidemic in China is characterized by the co-circulation of multiple subtypes and recombinant forms. A novel circulating recombinant form of HIV-1 (CRF176_BC) has been identified in Yunnan Province, China. Near-full-length genome sequences were obtained from four individuals who identified as heterosexual and were epidemiologically unlinked. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these sequences formed a distinct monophyletic cluster from known subtypes and CRFs. Bootscanning analyses revealed a subtype C backbone with two subtype B insertions. Bayesian evolutionary dating estim

Oropharyngeal gonorrhoea among heterosexual men and women at a sexual health centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2023: reservoir for transmission?

BACKGROUND: Sexual health centres (SHCs) in the Netherlands report a surge in gonorrhoea, especially among young women (notably oropharyngeal) and men who have sex with women (MSW) since the second half of 2022. MSW are not routinely oropharyngeal tested, and women only when reporting oral sex. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess oropharyngeal gonorrhoea in MSW and women, and potential underdiagnosis. METHODS: From 10 August to 10 November 2023, the SHC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, extended its gonorrhoea testing protocol, requiring oropharyngeal tests for all MSW and women. Positive

Oropharyngeal gonorrhoea infections among young heterosexual users of online sexual health services across the island of Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited evidence about the prevalence of oropharyngeal gonorrhoea (OPNG) in heterosexuals. To test the hypothesis that the oropharynx acts as a reservoir for gonorrhoea, potentially contributing to high rates of infection, we assessed OPNG positivity in self-sampling individuals. METHODS: From November 2023 to March 2024, SH:24, an online postal self-sampling service, expanded gonorrhoea (NG) nucleic acid amplification testing to include oropharyngeal swabs for heterosexual individuals aged 17-24 years in Northern Ireland and Ireland. Participants were included if they id

Unusual Localization of AIDS-Related Kaposi's Sarcoma in a Heterosexual Male during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Report.

Kaposi's sarcoma is an AIDS-defining illness and remains the most frequent tumor arising in HIV-infected patients with multifactorial etiology. We present a case of a 30-year-old Caucasian male with an 18-year history of HIV infection. The patient was presented with a one-week history of fever, non-productive cough, and skin lesions. There was an associated weakness and weight loss in a duration of 6 months. Clinical examination showed fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, lower limb edema, ascites, and violaceous cutaneous eruption comprising patches, plaques, and nodules. He also had a red nod

Barriers to sexual and reproductive care among cisgender, heterosexual and LGBTQIA + adolescents in the border region: provider and adolescent perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: The United States (U.S.) has higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and adolescent pregnancy than most other industrialized countries. Furthermore, health disparities persist among racial and ethnic minority adolescents (e.g., African American and Latinx) and in counties located along the U.S.-Mexico border region-they demonstrate the highest rates of STIs and unintended pregnancy among adolescents. METHODS: Qualitative data were collected as part of formative research for the development of a mobile app that provides gender-inclusive sexual education to adolesce

Health Disparities Between Older Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults and Heterosexual Adults in the Public Mental Health System.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, the authors examined disparities in general health, substance use, mental health conditions, and acute service use between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults (ages ≥50 years) and a matched sample of heterosexual adults. METHODS: Individuals whose electronic health record indicated their sexual orientation as gay, lesbian, or bisexual from the 2015 New York State Office of Mental Health Patient Characteristics Survey were matched with heterosexual individuals, resulting in N=1,659 individuals in each of the two groups. Differences in health status indicators and

Sexual excitation and sex-linked substance use predict overall cannabis use in mostly heterosexual and bisexual women.

Background: Bisexual and mostly heterosexual women report higher substance use than exclusively heterosexual or lesbian women. In sexual minority men, sex-linked substance use (SLSU) can increase risk for substance use problems; equivalent research in women is lacking. Objectives: To test if sexual excitation and inhibition mediate the association between sexual minority status and women's SLSU.Methods: We surveyed a convenience sample of 595 undergraduate women who identified as exclusively heterosexual (n = 499), mostly heterosexual (n = 59), or bisexual (n = 37). Social representations of the prevention of heterosexual transmission of HIV among young Africans from five countries, 1997-2014.

HIV prevention has evolved dramatically since the 1990s. The ABC trilogy (abstinence, be faithful, use a condom) has expanded to incorporate a range of biomedical prevention strategies, including voluntary medical male circumcision, pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, and treatment-as-prevention, and to accommodate structural and combination prevention approaches. This study examines how young Africans from five epidemiologically and socio-culturally diverse countries (Swaziland, Kenya, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Senegal) made sense of the evolving prevention of sexual transmission of HIV betwe

Syphilis in heterosexual women: case characteristics and risk factors for recent syphilis infection in Tokyo, Japan, 2017-2018.

In response to an increase in heterosexual syphilis notifications in Tokyo, we conducted a questionnaire-based case-control study among women aged ≥20 years and sexually active in the past six months who sought a syphilis test in Tokyo during 2017-2018. Cases were women diagnosed as recent syphilis infection based on serological tests. Controls were serologically non-reactive or those with only a past syphilis infection. We described cases and assessed for risk factors of recent syphilis using logistic regression. A total of 524 women (60 cases, 464 controls) were enrolled. Notably, among case

A Systematic Review of the Current Status of Safer Conception Strategies for HIV Affected Heterosexual Couples in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We conducted a systematic review of safer conception strategies (SCS) for HIV-affected couples in sub-Saharan Africa to inform evidence-based safer conception interventions. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched fifteen electronic databases using the following inclusion criteria: SCS research in HIV-affected couples; published after 2007; in sub-Saharan Africa; primary research; peer-reviewed; and addressed a primary topic of interest (SCS availability, feasibility, and acceptability, and/or education and promotion). Researchers independently reviewed each study for eligibility using a stan

Comparing treatment response between LGBQ and heterosexual individuals attending a CBT- and DBT-skills-based partial hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Despite a greater need for mental health treatment in individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other sexual minority identities (LGBQ+), no prior study has examined mental health treatment outcomes for LGBQ+ populations receiving standard care. We compared individuals identifying as LGBQ+ or heterosexual on treatment outcomes following a partial hospital program based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). METHOD: A total of 441 participants (19% LGBQ+; mean age = 34.42 years; 56% female, 42% male, 2% nonbinary) attending

Factors Associated with Recent HIV Testing among Heterosexuals at High Risk for HIV Infection in New York City.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends persons at high risk for HIV infection in the United States receive annual HIV testing to foster early HIV diagnosis and timely linkage to health care. Heterosexuals make up a significant proportion of incident HIV infections (>25%) but test for HIV less frequently than those in other risk categories. Yet factors that promote or impede annual HIV testing among heterosexuals are poorly understood. The present study examines individual/attitudinal-, social-, and structural-level factors associated with past-year HIV testing am

Rape Myth Acceptance, Efficacy, and Heterosexual Scripts in Men's Magazines: Factors Associated With Intentions to Sexually Coerce or Intervene.

Sexual coercion has gained researchers' attention as an underreported form of sexual abuse or harm. The percentage of male and female college students who reported engaging in sexual coercion was as high as 82% for verbally coercive behaviors over the course of a year. Guided by heterosexual scripting theory and the integrated model of behavioral prediction, we examine potential factors associated with college students' intentions to sexually coerce or to intervene when friends plan to sexually coerce (bystander intention). Factors included young college students' beliefs about rape myth accep

Collateral consequences: implications of male incarceration rates, imbalanced sex ratios and partner availability for heterosexual Black women.

While studies have found correlations between rates of incarceration and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), few studies have explored the mechanisms linking these phenomena. This qualitative study examines how male incarceration rates and sex ratios influence perceived partner availability and sexual partnerships for heterosexual Black women. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 Black women living in two US neighbourhoods, one with a high male incarceration rate and an imbalanced sex ratio (referred to as 'Allentown') and one with a low male incarceration rate and an equitabl
