A calcium-cross-linked hydrogel based on alginate-modified atelocollagen functions as a scaffold material.

We have developed a scaffold material consisting of a covalently-bonded structure of alginate and atelocollagen (AtCol). Addition of calcium ions caused the material to form a hydrogel (alginate-modified AtCol gel). The condition of the alginate-modified AtCol gel could be controlled by the feed ratio of alginate and the activating reagent. Measurement of temporal stability in culture medium suggested that covalent bonding between alginate and AtCol might contribute to the structural stability of the alginate-modified AtCol gel. Culture with endothelial cells indicated that cell adhesiveness o

A prospective controlled clinical study of skin donor sites treated with a 1-4,2-acetamide-deoxy-B-D-glucan polymer: a preliminary report.

The effect of Hyphecan (1-4,2-acetamide-deoxy-B-D-glucan) on skin donor site healing was compared with the standard skin donor site dressing Kaltostat (calcium sodium alginate) in 35 burn patients with 70 skin donor sites prospectively. The median time of wound healing for the Hyphecan group was 12 days with an average of 13.1+/-4.0 days (ranged from 9 to 28 days) while the Kaltostat group had a median healing time of 12 days (ranged from 8 to 28 days) with a mean of 13.0+/-4.1 days. The difference in healing time between these two groups was statistically insignificant with a P-value of 0.95.

New medicinal treatment for severe gingivostomatitis.

We formulated de novo a poraprezinc-sodium alginate suspension (P-AG) as a specific treatment for severe gingivostomatitis and administered it to 15 patients who had developed such inflammation while on chemotherapy. Very high utility of P-AG was demonstrated and the response was classified as excellent in 10 patients and good in 5 patients. The mechanism of the beneficial effect of P-AG in treatment of severe gingivostomatitis accompanied by hemorrhagic erosion and ulcers is considered to involve the mucosal protective effect, free radical scavenging activity and tissue repair promoting actio

A pH-responsive metal-lignin nanozyme microneedle system for stage-adapted therapy of infected skin wounds.

Infected wounds feature a dynamic microenvironment characterized by persistent bacterial infection and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), yet existing therapies often lack the ability to dynamically adapt to the evolving wound microenvironment. We developed a microenvironment-responsive microneedle delivery system (RuCe@D-P MNs) integrating a bimetallic lignin nanozyme for spatiotemporally adaptive wound therapy. The optimal RuCe@D-P nanozyme was synthesized by screening lignin-metal assemblies based on assembly yield, particle size, and enzyme-like activities (peroxidase/superoxide dism

Polyelectrolyte complexed alginate-oligochitosan nanoparticles for co-delivery of doxorubicin and indocyanine green in triple negative breast cancer therapy.

Breast cancer remains the most prevalent malignancy affecting women worldwide. Nanomedicine offers promising strategies to drastically enhance the efficacy of current treatments by enabling spatiotemporal control over cancer diagnostics and therapy. Here, we developed a triple-modal nanocarrier integrating chemo-, photothermal and photodynamic therapies within a single nanoplatform to address the limitations of conventional monotherapies. The nanoparticles were synthesized via polyelectrolyte complexation of sodium alginate and oligochitosan, yielding a biocompatible, non-toxic nanosystem suit

Optimization of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan microbeads for the sustained release of celecoxib and attenuation of intestinal inflammation in vitro.

Multiple anti-inflammatory medications have helped treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, oral administration has minimal absorption and systemic side effects. This study aims to investigate the potential of encapsulating anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib (Cele) within microbeads for the treatment of IBD. Microbeads were formed by cross-linking carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs) with sodium alginate (Alg) through the ionic gelation method and optimized through response surface methodology. Additionally, the study revealed a mucoadhesivity value of 59.32 ± 0.74 % for the optimized microbead

Cardiac tissue regeneration by microfluidic generated cardiac cell-laden calcium alginate microgels and mesenchymal stem cell extracted exosomes on myocardial infarction model.

Regenerative medicine is one of the effective approaches for myocardial infarcted (MI) tissue due to the low capacity of heart for regeneration. However, cell therapy with local administration has shown poor cell retention in the targeted area and limited engraftment capacity at the intended location, resulting in inadequate tissue regeneration. The present study involves mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes and encapsulated cells in small and injectable calcium alginate microgels by a specialized microfluidic device to decrease inflammation and increase cell retention in the infarcted tissu

Dressings and topical agents for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and promote healing, and there are many options to choose from including alginate, hydrocolloid and protease-modulating dressings. Topical agents have also been used as alternatives to dressings in order to promote healing.A clear and current overview of all the evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding the use of dressings or topical agents for the treatmen

Design and evaluation of polysaccharide-based transdermal films for the controlled delivery of nifedipine.

It was aimed to develop the matrix type polysaccharide-based transdermal films of nifedipine (NFD) to provide its long term plasma concentration. The mechanical tests were carried out on gel formulations which were utilised in the fabrication of transdermal films to determine the type of polymer (pectin, sodium alginate) and plasticizer (propylene glycol, glycerine) as well as their concentrations. The mechanical strength, elasticity, bioadhesiveness and the drug release characteristics of optimised films containing NFD were evaluated. Permeation of NFD from the films with/without adding an en

Efficacy of adding sodium alginate to omeprazole in patients with nonerosive reflux disease: a randomized clinical trial.

Nonerosive reflux disease (NERD) is the most common form of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Patients with NERD have a lower response rate to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) than patients with erosive esophagitis when gauged from relief of heartburn. Sodium alginate decreases the acidity of refluxate and protects the esophageal mucosa. However, whether the addition of sodium alginate to PPI therapy can improve NERD symptoms remains unknown. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of adding sodium alginate to basal PPI therapy for NERD. Patients who had experienced heartbu

Polygonatum polysaccharide microspheres encapsulated living Clostridium butyricum for mucosal barrier repair and immune regulation.

A collaborative intervention strategy based on probiotics represents a promising therapeutic approach against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, enhancing probiotic efficacy within the IBD microenvironment while minimizing side effects remains a critical challenge. Polygonatum polysaccharide (PP), a natural plant-derived bioactive polymer, has attracted significant attention due to its ability to regulate oxidative and inflammatory stress with a favorable safety profile. Herein, PP was incorporated into calcium-alginate microgels (Mgel), resulting in enhanced mechanical strength and th

Sodium alginate-encapsulated Colchicum nanoparticles attenuate TNF-α and NF-κB signaling in macrophages: A novel therapeutic strategy for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease driven by macrophage activation and pro-inflammatory signaling, particularly via TNF-α and NF-κB pathways. Current therapies, including methotrexate and biologic agents, provide clinical benefits but are limited by systemic toxicity, high costs, and treatment resistance. Here, we report the development of sodium alginate (SA)-encapsulated nanoparticles incorporating Colchicum micranthum (CM) and Colchicum chalcedonicum (CC) extracts as a novel therapeutic approach for RA. Phytochemical profiling revealed distinct polyphenolic signatures
