Evaluation of the Burden of HPV-Related Hospitalizations as a Useful Tool to Increase Awareness: 2007-2017 Data from the Sicilian Hospital Discharge Records.

In light of the implementation of human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention strategies, epidemiological studies in different geographical areas are required in order to assess the impact of HPV-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations in Sicily. A retrospective observational study estimated 43,531 hospitalizations attributable to HPV from 2007 to 2017. During the observed period, there was a decrease for all HPV-related conditions with a higher reduction, among neoplasms, for cervical cancer (annual percent change (APC) = -9.9%,

How far back do we need to look to capture diagnoses in electronic health records? A retrospective observational study of hospital electronic health record data.

OBJECTIVES: Analysis of routinely collected electronic health data is a key tool for long-term condition research and practice for hospitalised patients. This requires accurate and complete ascertainment of a broad range of diagnoses, something not always recorded on an admission document at a single point in time. This study aimed to ascertain how far back in time electronic hospital records need to be interrogated to capture long-term condition diagnoses. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study of routinely collected hospital electronic health record data. SETTING: Queen Elizabeth Hospit…

A novel mortality model for acute alcoholic hepatitis including variables recorded after admission to hospital.

Severe forms of alcoholic hepatitis in patients with alcoholic liver disease are associated with high mortality; it is therefore vital to identify those patients at greatest risk of mortality in 28 days as they may benefit from aggressive intervention. The aim of this study is to propose a new predictive model that can be used in clinical practice to identify such patients and to monitor their progress while in hospital. A cohort of 82 patients was selected and for each of them, a number of clinical findings and standard laboratory tests at the time of admission to hospital were recorded. Also

Hospital recorded morbidity and breast cancer incidence: a nationwide population-based case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic diseases and their complications may increase breast cancer risk through known or still unknown mechanisms, or by shared causes. The association between morbidities and breast cancer risk has not been studied in depth. METHODS: Data on all Danish women aged 45 to 85 years, diagnosed with breast cancer between 1994 and 2008 and data on preceding morbidities were retrieved from nationwide medical registries. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using conditional logistic regression associating the Charlson comorbidity score (measured using both

A Scottish record linkage study of risk factors in medical history and dementia outcome in hospital patients.

The relative risk (RR) of acquiring a hospital diagnosis of dementia was estimated in 101,104 patients (1 in 25 fraction) randomly selected from total admissions to Scottish general hospitals between 1968 and 1977. The patients were allocated to putative at-risk groups according to main diagnosis at time of index admission, and RR of dementia (ICD 9,290) was contrasted between ten risk groups and a reference group. Record linkage was used to reduce admission episodes to individual cases, to link general and psychiatric Scottish Morbidity Records (SMR 1 and SMR 4), to identify subsequent admiss

A comparison of hospital and general practice blood pressure readings using a shared-care record card.

Shared-care blood pressure record cards were issued to 149 consecutive hypertensive patients attending our hospital clinic. In 108 (72.5 per cent), general practitioners entered readings they had obtained onto the cards. The use of the record card has proved helpful in the management of patients, and we are encouraged by the co-operation of the family doctors.A comparison of blood pressures measured in hospital and in general practice showed that general practitioners found systolic pressures to be an average of 5.5 mm Hg lower than hospital doctors, but there were no differences in diastolic

[Between File and Medical Record: A Case Study from the Stasi Prison Hospital in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen].

The targeted use of medication in Stasi remand detention centers prior to interrogations has so far been insufficiently empirically documented. However, the files of the pre-trial detainee "Clausmann" provide, for the first time, evidence that psychotropic substances may have been deliberately used prior to interrogations and that their use was not fully disclosed to the courts. Against the backdrop of the institutional function of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen prison hospital within the GDR's security apparatus, this article examines, by way of example, the extent to which medication may have b

Electronic health record dynamic features for in-hospital death among chronic kidney disease patients.

Prediction of in-hospital death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohorts could aid medical resource allocation to reduce mortality. The relative contribution of dynamic data based on electronic health record (EHR) for prediction of CKD patients in-hospital death remains understudied. In this retrospective cohort study based on EHR data from the First Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital and the Sixth Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital, a long short-term memory (LSTM) model and a logistic regression (LR) feature engineer model based on sequential data, and a LR baseline model based on stat

Standardizing default electronic health record tools to improve safety for hospitalized patients with Parkinson's disease.

Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems are often configured to address challenges and improve patient safety for persons with Parkinson's disease (PWP). For example, EHR systems can help identify Parkinson's disease (PD) patients across the hospital by flagging a patient's diagnosis in their chart, preventing errors in medication and dosing through the use of clinical decision support, and supplementing staff education through care plans that provide step-by-step road maps for disease-based care of a specific patient population. However, most EHR-based solutions are locally developed and, thus

Retrospective analysis of the impact of electronic medical record alerts on low value care in a pediatric hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Hospital costs continue to rise unsustainably. Up to 20% of care is wasteful including low value care (LVC). This study aimed to understand whether electronic medical record (EMR) alerts are effective at reducing pediatric LVC and measure the impact on hospital costs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using EMR data over a 76-month period, we evaluated changes in 4 LVC practices following the implementation of EMR alerts, using time series analysis to control for underlying time-based trends, in a large pediatric hospital in Australia. The main outcome measure was the change in rate of each

Distribution of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in CBNAAT samples received in a tertiary care hospital - A record-based study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) accounts for 85% of all reported tuberculosis cases globally. Extrapulmonary involvement can occur in isolation or along with a pulmonary focus as in the case of patients with disseminated tuberculosis (TB). EPTB can occur through hematogenous, lymphatic, or localized bacillary dissemination from a primary source, such as PTB and affects the brain, eye, mouth, tongue, lymph nodes of neck, spine, bones, muscles, skin, pleura, pericardium, gastrointestinal, peritoneum and the genitourinary system as primary and/or disseminated disease. Although pulmonary

Factors contributing to hospitalization costs for patients with COPD in China: a retrospective analysis of medical record data.

PURPOSE: Hospitalization brings considerable economic pressure on COPD patients in China. A clear understanding of hospitalization costs for patients with COPD is warranted to improve treatment strategies and to control costs. Currently, investigation on factors contributing to hospitalization costs for patients with COPD in China is limited. This study aimed to measure the hospitalization costs of COPD and to determine the contributing factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical record data from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 2016 to December 2016 were

From hospitalization records to surveillance: The use of local patient profiles to characterize cholera in Vellore, India.

Despite availability of high quality medical records, health care systems often do not have the resources or tools to utilize these data efficiently. Yet, hospital-based, laboratory-confirmed records may pave the way for building reliable surveillance systems capable of monitoring temporal trends of emerging infections. In this communication, we present a new tool to compress and visualize medical records with a local population profile (LPP) approach, which transforms information into statistically comparable patterns. We provide a step-by-step tutorial on how to build, interpret, and expand
