Impact of a Supportive Housing Program on Housing Stability and Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Young Adults in New York City Who Were Aging Out of Foster Care.

Former foster youth are at increased risk of housing instability and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during the transitional period following foster care. We measured housing stability using sequence analysis and assessed whether a supportive housing program in New York, New York, was effective in improving housing stability and reducing STIs among former foster youth. Matched administrative records identified 895 former foster youth who were eligible for the housing program during 2007-2010. The main outcomes included housing stability (as determined from episodes of homelessness, inca…

Comparison of intestinal permeability, morphology, and ileal microbial communities of commercial hens housed in conventional cages and cage-free housing systems.

The gastrointestinal health of poultry can be impacted by a variety of factors including their environment. As egg production moves from conventional cage housing (CC) toward cage-free housing (CF), it is important to understand this impact on intestinal health. This study was conducted to determine if housing type impacted intestinal permeability, morphology, and microbial communities in commercial hens across housing systems. Hens were randomly selected from 2 rooms of CC (n = 25) and CF (n = 25) at a commercial facility. Birds were given fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-D) by oral g…

Snowball Vs. House-to-House Technique for Measuring Annual Incidence of Kala-azar in the Higher Endemic Blocks of Bihar, India: A Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Visceral Leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar, is widely prevalent in Bihar. The National Kala-azar Control Program has applied house-to-house survey approach several times for estimating Kala-azar incidence in the past. However, this approach includes huge logistics and operational cost, as occurrence of kala-azar is clustered in nature. The present study aims to compare efficiency, cost and feasibility of snowball sampling approach to house-to-house survey approach in capturing kala-azar cases in two endemic districts of Bihar, India. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A comm

Housing Subsidies and Housing Stability are Associated with Better HIV Medical Outcomes Among Persons Who Experienced Homelessness and Live with HIV and Mental Illness or Substance Use Disorder.

Among 958 applicants to a supportive housing program for low-income persons living with HIV (PLWH) and mental illness or a substance use disorder, we assessed impacts of housing placement on housing stability, HIV care engagement, and viral suppression. Surveillance and administrative datasets provided medical and residence information, including stable (e.g., rental assistance, supportive housing) and unstable (e.g., emergency shelter) government-subsidized housing. Sequence analysis identified a "quick stable housing" pattern for 67% of persons placed by this program within 2 years, vs. 28% …

Co-housing Alters Gut Microbiota and Disease Severity in Experimental Pemphigoid Disease.

Pemphigoid diseases (PD) are autoimmune blistering disorders in which alterations of the skin and gut microbiota have been reported, yet how microbial variation relates to disease severity remains unclear. Using a bullous pemphigoid-like mouse model, we compared genetically identical C57BL/6J mice from two breeding facilities that differed in their baseline microbiota. Mice from Charles River developed markedly milder disease than in-house-bred animals. Co-housing partially homogenized their gut microbiota, shifting in-house mice asymmetrically toward the Charles River community, coinciding wi…

Housing and Stroke Outcomes: Why Aging in Place Needs to Be Equitable.

Limited research on the impacts of housing conditions on post-stroke outcomes exists, particularly in minoritized neighborhoods that face greater housing disparities than non-Hispanic White neighborhoods. This is largely due to the unavailability of data that combines residential conditions and post-stroke outcomes in diverse communities. This brief report explored whether neighborhood housing values, a proxy of housing conditions, mediate the association between neighborhood ethnic composition (%Hispanic) and post-stroke outcomes in Nueces County, a bi-ethnic community in south Texas. Linear …

The Dynamic Relationship Between Objective and Subjective Housing Affordability and Mental Health.

This study explored how housing affordability is associated with mental health by focusing on the moderating role of subjective perceptions of rent burden. Drawing on data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study, we examined whether the association between unaffordable housing (assessed using the rent-to-income ratio) and mental health varied depending on the residents' perceptions of housing cost burden. The findings revealed that mental health outcomes were poorer when high housing costs were accompanied by a sense of burden. These interaction patterns were especially pronounced among h…

Pathways Connecting Housing Assistance to Child Well-Being in Families Experiencing Homelessness.

Recent increases in family homelessness place children at heightened risk for long-term health challenges. Research has shown that long-term rental subsidies reduce emotional-behavioral and sleep problems among children in homeless families, but the pathways driving these effects are not well understood. This study examined mediating pathways between assignment to housing assistance interventions and improvements in children's emotional-behavioral and sleep outcomes three years later. We used data from the Family Options Study (FOS), a randomized controlled trial by the US Department of Housin…

From Instability to Recovery: Mapping Youth Housing Trajectories with Life History Calendar.

Youth homelessness is widely studied, yet little research traces developmental housing pathways across time. This study used a life-course lens to explore how youth navigate instability from childhood into emerging adulthood, and how connection, structure, and meaning-making shape recovery. By mapping temporal movement, we identify turning points that shift trajectories toward stability. Eight youth (ages 21-26) enrolled in a cash-transfer program participated in Life History Calendar interviews to reconstruct housing trajectories and contextual life events. Transcripts and calendars were anal…

Housing instability types and adverse behavioral health among U.S. high school students.

PURPOSE: Existing classifications of housing instability often oversimplify the diverse experiences of unstable housing among youth, potentially obscuring varied health risks. This study addresses this gap by examining the nuanced classification of housing instability and its association with behavioral health outcomes among U.S. high school students. METHODS: Data from the 2021 and 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (n = 26,219) were utilized. Housing status was categorized into four levels: housing stability, uncertain housing stability, housing instability, and severe housing instability. Ou…

Electric vehicle adoption, gentrification, and housing prices: a longitudinal study in California.

Increasing adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) has raised concerns about potential disparities, including increased gentrification in low-income communities. As a first step in unraveling this rarely studied relationship, we examined the association between ZEV adoption and measures of gentrification. We addressed two questions: (1) How do ZEV adoption trends vary by neighborhood-level gentrification and disadvantage in California metropolitan areas? and (2) Among neighborhoods that are not already gentrified, is prior ZEV adoption associated with subsequent changes in housing prices? We…

A Cross-Sectional Study on Parakeets Feeding and Housing Practices in Italy.

Italy has one of the largest companion bird populations in Europe. This study aimed to investigate feeding and housing practices among Italian parakeet owners. An online questionnaire was distributed, yielding 433 voluntary responses. Participants were classified as hobbyists (HBY; ≤ 13 birds owned) or breeders (BRD; > 13 birds owned) to evaluate differences between groups. All BRD and 67.4% of HBY owned more than one bird (p < 0.001), while 74.9% of HBY and 30.5% of BRD (p < 0.001) reported owning only one bird species. Budgerigars were the most frequently reported species (overall: 40.2%), f…

Food Insecurity, Housing Instability, and Neighborhood Context: Pathways to Adolescent Mental Health.

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental health challenges in the United States have reached critical levels. This is a sensitive developmental period during which exposure to household-level hardships, such as food insecurity and housing instability, and adverse neighborhood environments may heighten vulnerability to mental, emotional, developmental, and behavioral health (MEDBH). This study examined the pathways through which household-level and neighborhood factors influence adolescent MEDBH. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, logistic regression mode…

Housing Attainment With the Psychiatric Assistance for Transitional Homelessness in Shelters Program.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of mental illness is high among homeless populations, yet traditional clinic-based care is often inaccessible. For urban areas where housing-first models are difficult to implement because of high costs, integrated on-site psychiatric services in shelters may offer a feasible alternative. OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical and demographic factors associated with housing attainment among individuals experiencing homelessness with mental illness participating in an on-site psychiatric service program. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This 5-year retrospective cohort st…

Housing structure shapes dengue transmission dynamics in a rapidly urbanizing Malaysian district.

Dengue fever continues to pose a significant public health threat in Malaysia, particularly in peri-urban districts undergoing rapid residential expansion. However, the extent to which housing structures influence dengue transmission remains poorly quantified. This study investigated the temporal, proportional, and spatial dynamics of dengue across five housing categories; landed properties, high-rise residential units, traditional/rural houses, institutional quarters, and others in Kuala Selangor from 2020 to 2024. A total of 5,426 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases obtained from the national …
