Intersectoral action for health: preventing psittacosis spread after one reported case.

Zoonotic diseases are a significant health threat for humans and animals. To better understand the epidemiology, etiology, and pathology of infectious agents affecting humans and animals combined approaches are needed. Here we describe an epidemiological investigation conducted by physicians and veterinarians after a reported case of psittacosis. Upon admission suffering from respiratory distress syndrome in a hospital and with a history of bird contact, a female patient was serologically diagnosed with psittacosis. After the case notification, veterinarians were able to investigate the source

A review of the proposed role of neutrophils in rodent amebic liver abscess models.

Host invasion by Entamoeba histolytica, the pathogenic agent of amebiasis, can lead to the development of amebic liver abscess (ALA). Due to the difficulty of exploring host and amebic factors involved in the pathogenesis of ALA in humans, most studies have been conducted with animal models (e.g., mice, gerbils, and hamsters). Histopathological findings reveal that the chronic phase of ALA in humans corresponds to lytic or liquefactive necrosis, whereas in rodent models there is granulomatous inflammation. However, the use of animal models has provided important information on molecules and me

Influenza: old and new threats.

Influenza remains an important disease in humans and animals. In contrast to measles, smallpox and poliomyelitis, influenza is caused by viruses that undergo continuous antigenic change and that possess an animal reservoir. Thus, new epidemics and pandemics are likely to occur in the future, and eradication of the disease will be difficult to achieve. Although it is not clear whether a new pandemic is imminent, it would be prudent to take into account the lessons we have learned from studying different human and animal influenza viruses. Specifically, reconstruction of the genes of the 1918 pa

Sex-Specific Diet-Microbiota Interactions in Ageing: Implications for Healthy Longevity.

Background/Objectives: Diet-microbiota interactions shape ageing; however, their sex-specific dimensions remain poorly defined. Human studies rarely stratify analyses by sex, while most evidence of sex-dependent microbial and metabolic responses comes from preclinical models. This review synthesizes current findings on the sex-specific pathways linking diet, microbiota, and healthy ageing. Methods: A narrative review was conducted by integrating human observational studies, randomized controlled trials, and mechanistic animal research. Evidence was organized into four domains: (1) age-related

Epidemiology and molecular relationships of Cryptosporidium spp. in people, primates, and livestock from Western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is one of the most common parasitic diarrheal agents in the world and is a known zoonosis. We studied Cryptosporidium in people, livestock, and non-human primates in the region of Kibale National Park, Uganda. Land use change near the park has resulted in fragmented forest patches containing small, remnant populations of wild primates that interact intensively with local people and livestock. Our goal was to investigate risk factors for Cryptosporidium infection and to assess cross-species transmission using molecular methods. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Diagno

Development of a novel multi-epitope vaccine for brucellosis prevention.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella, presents a significant threat to both animal and human health. In animals, the disease can lead to infertility, miscarriage, and high fever, while in humans, symptoms may include recurrent fever, fatigue, sweating, hepatosplenomegaly, and joint and muscle pain following infection. Treatment often involves long-term antibiotic therapy, placing a substantial psychological and financial burden on patients. While vaccination is crucial for prevention, current animal vaccines have drawbacks such as residual virulence, and a safe and effective huma

My Horse Is My Therapist: The Medicalization of Pleasure among Women Equestrians.

Pink t-shirts that proclaim "My horse is my therapist" are for sale in a wide variety of horse-sport catalogues. Literature on the healing power of human-nonhuman animal encounters and the practice of a variety of animal-assisted therapy programs, such as hippotherapy and equine-facilitated therapy, show dramatic growth over the last 30 years. Less attention is paid to the role that horse-human interactions may play in more popular accountings of well-being and impairment among a sample of everyday riders. Analysis of 50 lifecycle narratives, collected from accomplished but nonprofessional equ

Animal models of human pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a medical and public health priority, and advances against this disease will require improved knowledge of biological mechanisms. Human pneumonia is modeled with experimental infections of animals, most frequently mice. Mouse models are leading to important discoveries relevant to pneumonia, but their limitations must be carefully considered. Several approaches to establishing pneumonia in mice have been developed, and each has specific strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, procedures for characterizing microbial and host responses to infection have unique advantages and disadvanta

Experimental infection of the olive baboon (Paplio anubis) with Plasmodium knowlesi: severe disease accompanied by cerebral involvement.

Experimental systems that model some of the complex interactions between parasite and host can be extremely valuable in identifying and developing new prophylactics and therapeutics against human diseases. Because primates have similar immune systems to humans, we have characterized a baboon model for understanding host response to Plasmodium knowlesi. Ten intact olive baboons (Papio anubis) of either sex were experimentally infected with P. knowlesi H strain erythrocytic parasites. The infection in these baboons was either acute or chronic. Animals with acute infection developed multiple syst

Animal evidence considered in determination of cannabis smoke and Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 -THC) as causing reproductive toxicity (developmental endpoint); Part II. Neurodevelopmental effects.

This review focuses on neurodevelopmental effects observed in animal studies of cannabis smoke and Δ9 -THC. Effects in offspring after preconceptional, prenatal, or perinatal exposure to cannabis smoke or Δ9 -THC were considered. Locomotor and exploratory behavior effects were noted in rats. Cognitive effects observed included impairment of memory and learning, attention deficits, time taken to complete tasks (rats) and alterations in response to visual stimuli (rats/monkeys). Emotionality was observed in rodents as an increase in separation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations, reduced social int

Results of micronucleus assays with individuals who are occupationally and environmentally exposed to mercury, lead and cadmium.

Millions of humans are exposed occupationally and environmentally to lead, mercury and cadmium compounds. Mercury compounds are less abundant but some of them belong to the most toxic chemicals which are known. We evaluated the literature to find out if these metals act in humans as genotoxic carcinogens and if their health effects can be predicted by use of micronucleus (MN) assays with lymphocytes and/or with other genotoxicity tests. Numerous studies showed that lead and mercury induce cancer in humans and also in animals, in vitro experiments with cultured cells indicate that they cause DN

Chronic exposure to MK-801 leads to olfactory deficits and reduced neurogenesis in the olfactory bulbs of adult male mice.

BACKGROUND: MK-801 is a drug widely used in preclinical studies to model schizophrenia in animals. Its distinctive feature is the ability to mimic pathological changes in social interactions. Unlike humans, rodents rely heavily on their sense of smell for social interaction. Since, as previously demonstrated, it also impairs neurogenesis, we set out to determine whether olfactory impairment is associated with chronic administration of the drug. METHODS: The mice were divided into two groups, of which one was administered the drug for 3 weeks, and the other only once. Olfaction and social tran

Leptospira Infections in Domestic and Wild Animals.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide-distributed, re-emerging zoonosis due to the large variety of wild and domestic animal species that can play the role of natural or accidental host. Currently, specific animal species play an important role as the reservoir for particular Leptospira serovars, although recent investigations have highlighted new host-pathogen interactions involved in Leptospira epidemiology. Furthermore, the constant modification of ecosystems and wildlife habitats and the constantly increasing number of animal species moving towards urban or peri-urban areas are increasing the possi

A viral enterotoxin. A new mechanism of virus-induced pathogenesis.

Acute infectious gastroenteritis is a major cause of infant morbidity in developed countries and of infant mortality in developing areas of the world. Rotavirus is recognized as the most important etiologic agent of infantile gastroenteritis, and studies of rotavirus serve as models to understand the complex interactions between enteric viruses and the multifunctional cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Understanding such interactions is significant for microbial pathogenesis because most (> 80%) infections are initiated at mucosal surfaces. Rotaviruses are pathogens that infect the mature en

The exposome and the human oral microbiome through the one health lens.

OBJECTIVES: To map and synthesise current evidence on how lifelong biological, environmental, and social exposures, collectively conceptualised as the exposome, interact with the human oral microbiome to influence oral disease development and progression within a One Health framework. DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published in English that examined the relationships between the exposome and the human oral microbiome. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, applying its five-stage methodological approach. Comprehensive searches were per

Edible Mushroom Polysaccharides as Functional Food Ingredients for Metabolic Health: Preparation, Techno-Functional Behavior, and Requirements for Translation.

Edible mushroom polysaccharide (EMP) preparations have repeatedly improved glycemic control, adiposity, lipid homeostasis and hepatic lipid accumulation in animal models, and luminal assays and microbiota-perturbation experiments support the routes involved. Selected preparations also thicken, emulsify, retain water and modify food matrices. Yet these findings rarely concern the same material: metabolic, mechanistic and techno-functional studies usually examine different preparations, and retained function is seldom assessed after formulation, processing and digestion. This narrative review us

Rats respond to aversive emotional arousal of human handlers with the activation of the basolateral and central amygdala.

Reading danger signals may save an animal's life, and learning about threats from others allows avoiding first-hand aversive and often fatal experiences. Fear expressed by other individuals, including those belonging to other species, may indicate the presence of a threat in the environment and is an important social cue. Humans and other animals respond to conspecifics' fear with increased activity of the amygdala, the brain structure crucial for detecting threats and mounting an appropriate response to them. It is unclear, however, whether the cross-species transmission of threat information

Duration of untreated chlamydial genital infection and factors associated with clearance: review of animal studies.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an important cause of sexually transmitted infection that can manifest as acute cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and most commonly, chronic asymptomatic infection. The basis of this wide spectrum of manifestations and the factors that lead to clearance or chronic infection are poorly understood. We reviewed specific literature pertaining to clearance of primary genital tract infections in animal models, including mice, guinea pigs, pigs, sheep, and nonhuman primates. T helper 1 cell responses involved in cell-mediated immunity are key immune parameters that def
