Hydrogen cyanide smell sensitivity in some Indian populations.

The ability to smell HCN has been examined in a sample of 2619 subjects from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, belonging to different Indian ethnic groups. One single antimode, between concentrations of 5% and 10%, has been found. No sex nor ethnic differences were noted. Previous claims of possible sex-linked inheritance could not be confirmed.

Atomic-Scale Insights into Hydrogen-Induced Ductile-to-Brittle Transition in Polycrystalline α-Fe with Varying Hydrogen Concentrations and Grain Sizes.

With the development of hydrogen pipelines, hydrogen embrittlement has become a critical issue affecting the safe service of pipeline steels. However, the critical hydrogen concentration for the hydrogen-induced ductile-to-brittle transition and its dependence on grain size remain unclear. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to elucidate the effects of hydrogen concentration and grain size on the hydrogen-induced ductile-to-brittle transition by investigating hydrogen diffusion, dislocation emission, and fracture evolution in polycrystalline α-Fe. The results demonstrate that, with i…

Preparation of Deuterium-Labeled Tadalafil and Omeprazole by Carbon Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange: Hydrogen Scrambling, Acid-Induced Transformation, and LC-MS Applications.

RATIONALE: Stable isotope-labeled compounds are indispensable internal standards for reliable liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, but their preparation frequently requires multistep synthesis. Base-catalyzed hydrogen-deuterium exchange at carbon centers provides a simple alternative for generating stable isotopologues. Beyond quantitative applications, carbon-bound deuterium may serve as a mechanistic probe for investigating gas-phase fragmentation and chemically induced molecular transformations. In this work, tadalafil and omeprazole were selected as complementary model…

Experimental evidence for blue-shifted hydrogen bonding in the fluoroform-hydrogen chloride complex: a matrix-isolation infrared and ab initio study.

The 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex of fluoroform and hydrogen chloride was studied using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy and ab initio computations. Using B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory with 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets, the structures of the complexes and their energies were computed. For the 1:1 CHF3-HCl complexes, ab initio computations showed two minima, one cyclic and the other acyclic. The cyclic complex was found to have C-H · · · Cl and C-F · · · H interactions, where CHF3 and HCl sub-molecules act as proton donor and proton acceptor, respectively. The second minimum co…

Theoretical study of hydrogen bonding interaction in nitroxyl (HNO) dimer: interrelationship of the two N-H...O blue-shifting hydrogen bonds.

The hydrogen bonding interactions of the HNO dimer have been investigated using ab initio molecular orbital and density functional theory (DFT) with the 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and atom in molecules (AIM) theory were applied to understand the nature of the interactions. The interrelationship between one N-H...O hydrogen bond and the other N-H...O hydrogen bond has been established by performing partial optimizations. The dimer is stabilized by the N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions, which lead to the contractions of N-H bonds as well as the charact…

Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitrones to Hydroxylamine Derivatives with PhSiH3.

Herein, we report a practical metal- and additive-free method for transfer hydrogenation of nitrones, employing a readily available PhSiH3 as the hydrogen donor. The findings demonstrated the effective conversion of a wide range of ketone- and aldehyde-derived nitrones into their corresponding hydroxylamine derivatives in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. The reaction is readily scalable and demonstrates broad functional group tolerance, accommodating bromo, chloro, fluoro, trifluoromethyl, thioether, thiophene, and furan substituents. Hence, the proposed operationally simple pro…

Cobalt-Catalyzed Desymmetrizing Hydrogenation of Cyclic Anhydrides.

Achieving general asymmetric catalytic manifolds that accommodate broad substrate diversity remains a long-standing and highly sought-after goal in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report an efficient cobalt-catalyzed desymmetric hydrogenation of structurally diverse cyclic 1,2- and 1,3-diacid anhydrides, enabling access to pharmaceutically relevant chiral γ- and δ-lactones with broad substrate scope and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee). The reaction is readily scalable, as demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis of several representative products. Notably, this 3d-metal catalytic platf…

Hydrogenation of CO2 for sustainable fuel and chemical production.

Catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation is a potential route for producing sustainable fuels and chemicals, but existing catalysts need improvement. In particular, identifying active sites and understanding the interaction between components and the dynamic behavior of the participant species remain unclear. This fundamental knowledge is essential for the design of more efficient and stable catalysts. Because the nature of the active site (metal, oxide, carbide) is the main factor that determines the catalytic activity of the catalysts, this Review focuses on various types of heterogeneou…

Low pressure amide hydrogenation enabled by magnetocatalysis.

The catalytic hydrogenation of amides with molecular hydrogen (H2) is an appealing route for the synthesis of valuable amines entering in the preparation of countless organic compounds. Running effective amide hydrogenation under mild H2 pressures is challenging although desirable to preclude the need for specialized high-pressure technologies in research and industry. Here we show that magnetocatalysis with standard supported catalysts enables unprecedented amide hydrogenation at mild conditions. Widely available and commercial platinum on alumina (Pt/Al2O3) was functionalized with iron carbi…

An Enigma of Brain Gasotransmitters: Hydrogen Sulfide and Depression.

Depression is a leading global cause of disability. Emerging evidence highlights glutamatergic dysfunction, particularly impaired NMDA receptor signaling, as a key contributor to its neurobiology. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), once regarded solely as toxic, is now recognized for its role in regulating synaptic plasticity, inflammation, and neuronal survival. This review synthesizes recent findings on the antidepressant effects of H₂S. In animal models, H₂S administration improves depression-like behaviors while modulating key pathways such as PI3K/AKT/mTOR, Sirt1, and the cGAS-STING pathway. These b…

Role of hydrogen sulfide in catalyzing the formation of NO-ferroheme.

We recently demonstrated a rapid reaction between labile ferric heme and nitric oxide (NO) in the presence of reduced glutathione (GSH) or o … other cells and compartments, including in plasma, where another small and reactive thiol species, hydrogen sulfide (H2S/HS-), is also present and may catalyze NO-ferroheme formation akin to GSH. Here, we compare the reactivity of GSH and hydrogen sulfide with hemin in physiologically relevant media, including human serum albumin (HSA) and RBC membranes. …

Hydrogen sulfide action in the regulation of plant autophagy.

Hydrogen sulfide is a signalling molecule with a well-established impact on both plant and animal physiology. Intense investigation into the regulation of autophagy by sulfide in Arabidopsis thaliana has revealed that the post-translational modification of persulfidation/S-sulfhydration plays a key role. In this review focused on plants, we discuss the nature of the sulfide molecule involved in the regulation of autophagy, the final outcome of this modification and the persulfidated autophagy proteins identified so far. A detailed outline of the actual knowledge of the regulation mechanism of …

Implications of Hydrogen Sulfide in Development of Pulmonary Hypertension.

The pathological mechanisms underlying pulmonary hypertension (PH), as well as its treatment strategy, are crucial issues in this field. This review aimed to summarize the pathological mechanisms by which the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pathway contributes to PH development and its future implications. The data in this review were obtained from Medline and PubMed sources up to 2022 using the search terms "hydrogen sulfide" and "pulmonary hypertension". In the review, we discussed the significance of endogenous H2S pathway alteration in PH development and showed the advance of the role of H2S as the…

Hydrogen sulfide in the experimental models of arterial hypertension.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the third member of gasotransmitter family together with nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. H2S is involved in the regulation of blood pressure by controlling vascular tone, sympathetic nervous system activity and renal sodium excretion. Moderate age-dependent hypertension and endothelial dysfunction develop in mice with knockout of cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), the enzyme involved in H2S production in the cardiovascular system. Decreased H2S concentration as well as the expression and activities of H2S-producing enzymes have been observed in most commonly used animal m…

Hydrogen sulfide in longevity and pathologies: Inconsistency is malodorous.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the biologically active gases (gasotransmitters), which plays an important role in various physiological processes and aging. Its production in the course of methionine and cysteine catabolism and its degradation are finely balanced, and impairment of H2S homeostasis is associated with various pathologies. Despite the strong geroprotective action of exogenous H2S in C. elegans, there are controversial effects of hydrogen sulfide and its donors on longevity in other models, as well as on stress resistance, age-related pathologies and aging processes, including r…
