OBJECTIVE: We determined the prognostic significance of preoperative hydronephrosis in patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder undergoing radical cystectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients undergoing radical cystectomy at a single institution from 1996 to 2006. Exclusion criteria included diagnosis other than TCC, upper tract TCC, incomplete medical records, or obstructing stones. Hydronephrosis was confirmed by radiographic imaging. Survival was determined by date of death or last clinic visit.

Large cystic abdominal masses can represent a diagnostic dilemma despite advanced diagnostic and imaging techniques. We report a case of a large cystic mass initially managed as a giant ureteropelvic junction obstruction, but ultimately found to be a congenital splenic cyst. Focus is placed on the diagnostic evaluation of large cystic abdominal masses.

A 28-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease due to congenital hypoplasia and vesicoureteric reflux in the bilateral kidneys received a renal transplant from her 52-year-old mother. 94 children (109 kidneys) with congenital hydronephrosis were treated in 1989-1997. 67 of them underwent 76 plastic operations: Andersen-Hynes operation on the ureteropelvic segment without pelvic resection (n = 53), antevasal pyelopyelo- and ureteropyeloanastomosis (n = 18), ureteropyelolysis (n = 5). A 4-year-old castrated male Burmese cat was evaluated because of nonregenerative anemia (PCV, 20%) and was found to have renal failure. Renal ultrasonography revealed bilateral hydronephrosis. Antegrade pyelography of the right kidney failed to indicate obstructive disease. Necropsy and histologic examination of the ureters revealed a markedly stenotic lumen and massive fibrosis of the mucosa. An etiologic agent could not be found.

We investigated 10 patients with suspected unilateral hydronephrosis and normal or minimal widening of the calices or renal pelvis on routine urography by high rate perfusion of the renal pelvis and simultaneous intrapelvic pressure measurement.
