Zinc Improves Biocontrol of Fusarium Crown and Root Rot of Tomato by Pseudomonas fluorescens and Represses the Production of Pathogen Metabolites Inhibitory to Bacterial Antibiotic Biosynthesis.

ABSTRACT Crown and root rot of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici is an increasing problem in Europe, Israel, Japan, and North America. The biocontrol agent Pseudomonas fluorescens strain CHA0 provides only moderate control of this disease. A one-time amendment of zinc EDTA at 33 mug of Zn(2+)/ml to hydroponic nutrient solution in soilless rockwool culture did not reduce disease when used alone, but did reduce disease by 25% in the presence of CHA0. In in vitro studies with the pathogen, zinc at concentrations as low as 10 mug/ml abolished production of the phytotox

Sodic alkaline stress mitigation by interaction of nitric oxide and polyamines involves antioxidants and physiological strategies in Solanum lycopersicum.

Nitric oxide (NO) and polyamines (PAs) are two kinds of important signal in mediating plant tolerance to abiotic stress. In this study, we observed that both NO and PAs decreased alkaline stress in tomato plants, which may be a result of their role in regulating nutrient balance and reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby protecting the photosynthetic system from damage. Further investigation indicated that NO and PAs induced accumulation of each other. Furthermore, the function of PAs could be removed by a NO scavenger, cPTIO. On the other hand, application of MGBG, a PA synthesis inhibitor, d

Influence of day and night temperature and carbon dioxide concentration on growth, yield, and quality of green butterhead and red oakleaf lettuce.

Production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) within vertical farms is an expanding segment of controlled environment agriculture-precise manipulation of environmental parameters including mean daily temperature (MDT) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration enables year-round production, alongside color, yield, and crop size regulation. Our objectives included 1) quantify how MDT and CO2 interact to influence lettuce growth, development, and quality; 2) model lettuce growth under several MDTs and CO2 concentrations. Green butterhead 'Rex' and red oakleaf 'Rouxaï RZ' seedlings were transplanted into hy

Untargeted LC-QToF-MS profiling of the soybean (Glycine max) root-soil continuum reveals spatial compartmentalisation of putative exudate, defence, and iron-acquisition metabolite signatures.

INTRODUCTION: Compartment-resolved metabolite baselines for legumes grown under field conditions are notably scarce. Most root exudate data are obtained from hydroponic or pot systems using targeted assays. These methods fail to accurately represent the soil-borne and microbially derived chemical environments surrounding roots in situ. Furthermore, no such baseline has been established for soybeans grown on the calcareous Vertisols of central and western India, where phosphorus, Zn, and Fe availability are the primary constraints. METHODS: We employed untargeted liquid chromatography-quadrupo

Nano-iron modulates salt stress responses in Lycium barbarum via enhanced nutrient uptake, antioxidant defense, and phenolic metabolism.

While goji berry (Lycium barbarum) exhibits moderate to high salt tolerance, prolonged or high salinity can still impair its growth, water relations, and metabolism, especially in arid and saline regions. Despite its agronomic and pharmaceutical value, the combined effects of salinity and foliar-applied nano-iron remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the interactive impacts of salinity (0, 150, and 300 mM NaCl) and foliar nano-iron (0, 15, and 30 µM Fe-NPs) on physiological performance, nutrient dynamics, antioxidant responses, and secondary metabolite accumulation in hydroponical

Effects of Different Selenium Concentrations on Agronomic Traits, Antioxidant Defense, and Leaf Metabolome in Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Brigitta').

Selenium (Se) is an important micronutrient that is required in very small amounts and plays a significant role in enhancing plant growth, stress resistance, and fruit quality. In this study, we investigated the effects of different sodium selenite concentrations (CK, 0 mg/L; Se1, 0.50 mg/L; Se2, 1.00 mg/L, Se3, 2.00; and Se4, 3.00 mg/L) on the growth, nutrient absorption, antioxidant capacity, and leaf metabolome of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Brigitta') in hydroponic culture. Our results showed that moderate Se concentration (1.00 mg/L, Se2) had noticeable enhancements in key traits

Post-harvest cleaning, sanitization, and microbial monitoring of soilless nutrient delivery systems for sustainable space crop production.

Bioregenerative food systems that routinely produce fresh, safe-to-eat crops onboard spacecraft can supplement the nutrition and variety of shelf-stable spaceflight food systems for use during future exploration missions (i.e., low earth orbit, Mars transit, lunar, and Martian habitats). However, current space crop production systems are not yet sustainable because they primarily utilize consumable granular media and, to date, operate like single crop cycle, space biology experiments where root modules are sanitized prior to launch and discarded after each grow-out. Moreover, real-time detecti

The activation of iron deficiency responses of grapevine rootstocks is dependent to the availability of the nitrogen forms.

BACKGROUND: In viticulture, iron (Fe) chlorosis is a common abiotic stress that impairs plant development and leads to yield and quality losses. Under low availability of the metal, the applied N form (nitrate and ammonium) can play a role in promoting or mitigating Fe deficiency stresses. However, the processes involved are not clear in grapevine. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the response of two grapevine rootstocks to the interaction between N forms and Fe uptake. This process was evaluated in a hydroponic experiment using two ungrafted grapevine rootstocks Fercal (Vit

Phytoremediation of diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole in Arabidopsis thaliana cells and seedlings.

Diclofenac (DLF), a widely recognized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a broad-spectrum sulfonamide antibiotic, are commonly prescribed medications that have raised concerns as significant contributors to pharmaceutical pollution in natural ecosystems despite their clinical effectiveness. This study investigates the potential phytoremediation pathways for these two drugs in plant systems by tracking and quantifying the fate of the parent compounds and their metabolites in Arabidopsis thaliana using cell and seedling cultures. Results indicated significa

Toxicity of chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline on Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hare.

Tetracyclines are frequently detected in water bodies due to their widespread use in aquaculture and animal husbandry. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to explore the phytotoxic effects of Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hare exposed to various concentrations of chlortetracycline (CTC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 30, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 7 days (7 D) and 14 days (14 D), respectively. The results showed that similar to OTC treatment for 7 D, the relative growth rates (RGR) and catalase (CAT) activity of V. natans, after 7 D of CTC exposure, decreased significantly at 10 mg/L and

Solute content and energy status of roots of barley plants cultivated at different pH on nitrate- or ammonium-nitrogen.

Barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare cv. 'Gaulois') were precultured hydroponically for 4d on nutrient solutions with nitrate (3 mM) as N-source at pH 4.7, and were then transferred to solutions with ammonium or nitrate as N-source (3 mM), buffered and adjusted to different pH (4.0, 5.5, 6.8). Variations in shoot and root growth and solute contents were examined and grouped into pH-effects, ammonium effects and interactions. Shoot biomass was not affected under all conditions. Root fresh weight was insensitive to the external pH when nitrate was the N-source, but was drastically affected by a com

Modern approaches and future prospects in lettuce breeding for controlled environment agriculture.

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is expanding rapidly as a climate-resilient approach for year-round lettuce production near consumption centers. However, despite its supply chain advantages and high productivity, the economic viability and scalability of CEA-grown lettuce remain constrained by the continued reliance on cultivars developed for variable open-field conditions rather than stable, high-input, and space-limited environments of indoor production systems. This mismatch between existing germplasm and CEA-specific production requirements represents a critical gap that has not b

Evaluation of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties under ZnSO4 stress: Insights from growth, physiological, biochemical and metabolomics.

Although plants require an appropriate level of zinc (Zn) for normal growth and development, excessive accumulation, and high concentrations of it can impair plant growth, and disrupt physiological and metabolic processes. In this study, we aimed to identify zinc-tolerant chickpea varieties using multivariate analysis, and to elucidate the contribution of primary metabolites to zinc tolerance. We investigated multiple growth, physiological and biochemical parameters, including plant height, fresh weight and dry weight, Zn uptake, root-to-shoot ratio, relative shoot water content, tolerance ind

Effects of nitrogen on growth and physiological traits of feed mulberry under salt stress.

Soil salinization has emerged as a major concern, significantly limiting agricultural development in China. Nitrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining the cycling of key substances and energy metabolism within plants. When applied under salt stress, nitrogen can mitigate some of the detrimental effects of salinity on plants, thus improving growth performance and physiological resilience under saline conditions. In this study, one-year-old 'Gui 109' feed mulberry seedlings were used as experimental material in a hydroponic setup to investigate the impact of varying nitrogen levels on the grow

The Interplay of Sulfur and Selenium Enabling Variations in Micronutrient Accumulation in Red Spinach.

Aside from its importance in human and animal health, low levels of foliar-applied selenate (SeO4) can be advantageous in the presence of sulfur (S), contributing to improved growth, nutrient uptake, and crop quality. A hydroponic experiment in a growth chamber explored the interactive influence of Se and S on micronutrients and several quality indices, such as soluble sugars, organic acids, and total protein concentrations in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Three levels of S (deprivation, adequate, and excessive) with varying quantities of Se (deficient, moderate, and higher) were examined in

Aluminum resistance in wheat involves maintenance of leaf Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) content, decreased lipid peroxidation and Al accumulation, and low photosystem II excitation pressure.

The phytotoxic aluminum species (Al(3+)) is considered as the primary factor limiting crop productivity in over 40 % of world's arable land that is acidic. We evaluated the responses of two wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) with differential Al resistance, cv. Yecora E (Al-resistant) and cv. Dio (Al-sensitive), exposed to 0, 37, 74 and 148 μM Al for 14 days in hydroponic culture at pH 4.5. With increasing Al concentration, leaf Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) content decreased, as well as the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Φ PSII ), while a gradual increase in leaf mem
