OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of reproductive health training given in Turkish Armed Forces on recruits' knowledge.
METHODS: This interventional study was conducted at the Basic Military Training Centre, Kutahya, Turkey, from September to October 2009, and comprised recruits of armed forces. Data was collected and assessed before and after the training sessions. The intervention programme consisted of education focusing on anatomy of the reproductive system, contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infections, responsible parenthood, gender and violence against women. A knowledge ev

The kidney is one of the classical target organs of PTH action. Symptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is nowadays less frequent but mostly occurs with renal symptoms, in particular kidney stones. Nephrocalcinosis and polyuria, the latter closely related to the severity of hypercalcemia, are uncommon. Parathyroidectomy leads to a marked and long-lasting improvement of nephrolithiasis, whereas it has a limited effect on nephrocalcinosis. Kidney failure is one of the long-term complications of PHPT and is associated with a more severe clinical expression of the disease and a higher risk …

It has been clarified that even mild primary hyperparathyroidism without typical symptoms ie, nephrolithiasis, bone disease, influences bone status and reduced bone density and increased fracture risk can be improved with parathyroidectomy. Therefore, parathyroidectomy should be recommended for patients with asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism. Guideline and recommendation by an international work shop on primary hyperparathyroidism has presented for the surgical indications. Non invasive localization studies including ultrasound and sestamibi scan, and intraoperative parathyroid hormone …

Primary hyperparathyroidism is nowadays frequently diagnosed from screening biological work-up: it is due to a single parathyroid adenoma in nearly 90% of cases. There is increasing interest in the minimally invasive surgical approach with unilateral neck exploration. For such approaches preoperative localizing studies are mandatory. Ultrasound and radionuclide imaging are the most widely used procedures for this purpose. Ultrasound offers detailed anatomic imaging of the adenoma but may not be not able to detect some ectopic glands. Sonographic imaging features, as well as pitfalls and diagno…

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid neoplasms form a small percentage of head and neck neoplasms. Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by parathyroid adenomas, hyperplasia or, rarely, a carcinoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 48 parathyroidectomies received in the Department of Pathology of a major teaching hospital over a period of 10 years. Clinical, biochemical and radiological details were retrieved from medical records. Information regarding routine gross and microscopic examination findings (including frozen section and paraffin sections) was retrieved from departmental …

BACKGROUND: A recent study found considerable regional differences in treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism in Norway. There is no consensus on specific indications for operation in these patients. We surveyed opinions among Norwegian endocrine surgeons and endocrinologists on the indications for surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire on preoperative evaluation, indications for surgery and treatment of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism was sent to the chief consultants of surgical departments that operated on parathyroid glands in 2…

The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is important for maintaining calcium homeostasis. Parathyroid gland hyperplasia and subsequent hyperparathyroidism can occur secondary to chronic renal failure in dogs, resulting in significant alterations in calcium metabolism. Renal secondary hyperparathyroidism is a complex, multifactorial syndrome that involves changes in circulating levels of calcium, PTH, phosphorus, and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol). An increased PTH level can have deleterious effects, including soft tissue mineralization, fibrous osteodystroph…

The authors report a rare case of persistently recurring secondary hyperparathyroidism concomitant with chronic renal insufficiency. The patient underwent multiple surgical interventions (parathyroidectomy, implantation of parathyroid autograft into a forearm muscle, removal of hyperplastic autograft tissue). Results of clinical, laboratory, instrumental, and morphological studies are presented. Possible causes of relapses and problems of morphological diagnosis are discussed.

Preoperative imaging has proved its use successful in the localization of solitary parathyroid adenomas in patients with suspected primary hyperparathyroidism. However, due to multiglandular disease at presentation patients with renal hyperparathyroidism need to be analyzed separately, making the usefulness of imaging techniques controversial. Recently, improved methods of functional imaging like parathyroid scan with 99mTc-sestamibi or positron emission tomography, especially when combined with computed tomography, can provide additional quantitative and qualitative information that has yet t…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the most effective preoperative localization techniques for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism to facilitate the surgical procedure, decrease patient morbidity, and decrease the number of repeat surgeries owing to inability to locate the abnormal parathyroid gland.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study in which 53 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent preoperative sestamibi scanning and ultrasonography. If the two tests failed to agree on the precise location of the abnormal gland, a third imaging technique, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), was …

This study reports the development of a recombinant Bacillus ligniniphilus L1 laccase-rice straw biochar composite and its application in deltamethrin bioremediation. The L1-laccase was heterologously expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3), purified to a specific activity of 186 U/mg, and covalently immobilized on NaOH- and glutaraldehyde-modified rice straw biochar. Molecular docking against the AlphaFold2-predicted structure (UniProt E9PZ36) yielded a binding affinity of - 6.9 kcal/mol, with one hydrogen bond to MET216 (2.77 Å) and hydrophobic contacts with MET197, MET202, and MET210. However, 100

Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in the outpatient setting and is typically caused by a single benign parathyroid adenoma. Most patients with hyperparathyroidism are postmenopausal women. Patients can be asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Parathyroidectomy is the definitive cure for primary hyperparathyroidism, and no medical therapies have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for this disorder. Guidelines for surgery have been established by a National Institutes of Health consensus panel, but many patients do not meet these guidelines or …

The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is characterized by the constellation of elevated plasma serum calcium levels and low serum anorganic phosphate associated with inadequately high blood concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Parathyroid adenomas are the main reason for this disorder and can frequently be detected by ultrasound examination. Surgical removal of the parathyroid adenoma is recommended in the case of primary hyperparathyroidism complicated by osteoporosis, hyper-calciuria, nephrolithiasis, or impaired renal function. Here we present the case of a 68-year-old…

OBJECTIVE: In cases of re-operation for secondary hyperparathyroidism, to evaluate the extent to which the location of recurrent hyperplasia was predicted by (1) operative data from the first intervention, and (2) pre-operative imaging (before the re-operation).
METHODS: The files of 18 patients undergoing surgery for recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism were reviewed. The surgical findings were compared both with the report of the initial operation and with the results of pre-operative imaging (i.e. ultrasonography, Mibi scintigraphy or computed tomography).
RESULTS: The location of the …
