Inkjet-printed drug-loaded temporary tattoos for personalized pediatric pain treatment.

Parents worldwide suffer from their children's frequent refusal to take their medicine - even creams and patches may be refused due to tedious application, painful removal, and caprice. However, children find decorative tattoos appealing. Hence, a personalized drug-loaded temporary tattoo as a novel pediatric dosage form is presented. As a showcase, a pain treatment prototype tattoo based on a lidocaine/prilocaine eutectic was developed. By employing piezoelectric inkjet printing of the drug onto a decorative motif, which can be chosen based on the child's personal preference, the drug content

Hypertensive Pressure Mechanosensing Alone Triggers Lipid Droplet Accumulation and Transdifferentiation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells to Foam Cells.

Arterial Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a central role in the onset and progression of atherosclerosis. Upon exposure to pathological stimuli, they can take on alternative phenotypes that, among others, have been described as macrophage like, or foam cells. VSMC foam cells make up >50% of all arterial foam cells and have been suggested to retain an even higher proportion of the cell stored lipid droplets, further leading to apoptosis, secondary necrosis, and an inflammatory response. However, the mechanism of VSMC foam cell formation is still unclear. Here, it is identified that mec

Effect of variable selection algorithms on model performance for predicting moisture content in biological materials using spectral data.

Variable selection is a critical step for designing a dedicated multispectral real-time system from multicollinearity spectral data. It improves the prediction ability of the calibration model and provides faster prediction by reducing the curse of dimensionality. The main objective of this study was to compare the effect of variables selection algorithms on model performance for predicting moisture content in red meat using visible and near-infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging in the spectral range of 400-1000 nm and corn using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in the spectral range of 1100-2

Portable optical fiber probe-based spectroscopic scanner for rapid cancer diagnosis: a new tool for intraoperative margin assessment.

There continues to be a significant clinical need for rapid and reliable intraoperative margin assessment during cancer surgery. Here we describe a portable, quantitative, optical fiber probe-based, spectroscopic tissue scanner designed for intraoperative diagnostic imaging of surgical margins, which we tested in a proof of concept study in human tissue for breast cancer diagnosis. The tissue scanner combines both diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy (IFS), and has hyperspectral imaging capability, acquiring full DRS and IFS spectra for each scanned im

Review for Stokes-vector and Mueller-matrix polarization imaging technology: principles, implementation and applications.

This review systematically summarizes the principles, technological advancements, and diverse applications of Stokes-vector and Mueller-matrix polarization imaging (PI). The polarization of light is a fundamental property that provides unique and valuable information about the interaction between light and matter. While traditional polarimetry is limited to point-by-point measurements, PI captures the polarization state in a two-dimensional scene, generating a spatial map of parameters for complex and heterogeneous systems. The Stokes-Mueller formalism is the only complete mathematical tool fo

Characterization in respect to degradation of titanium-coated polypropylene surgical mesh explanted from humans.

Titanium-coated polypropylene (Ti-PP) mesh was introduced in 2002 as a surgical mesh for the treatment of hernias and shortly after for pelvic floor surgery, with the aim of improving biocompatibility when compared to non-titanised/regular PP mesh implants. The application of a titanium coating could also be beneficial to address concerns regarding the exposure of PP in an in vivo environment. Many studies have shown that PP, although it is widely accepted as a stable polymer, is subject to oxidation and degradation, such degradation affects the mechanical behavior, that is, the stiffness and

Assessment of foot perfusion in patients with a diabetic foot ulcer.

Assessment of foot perfusion is a vital step in the management of patients with diabetic foot ulceration, in order to understand the risk of amputation and likelihood of wound healing. Underlying peripheral artery disease is a common finding in patients with foot ulceration and is associated with poor outcomes. Assessment of foot perfusion should therefore focus on identifying the presence of peripheral artery disease and to subsequently estimate the effect this may have on wound healing. Assessment of perfusion can be difficult because of the often complex, diffuse and distal nature of periph

Decoupling CO2 Availability from Bulk Solubility via Biohybrid Reaction-Diffusion Nanoconfinement.

Although contemporary CO2 reduction research is largely dominated by the search for novel active sites, the performance of even the most sophisticated catalysts remains fundamentally constrained by the sluggish mass transport of dissolved CO2. Here, we demonstrate that engineering the local chemical microenvironment is as critical as tuning intrinsic catalytic activity. Inspired by the functional orchestration of cyanobacterial carboxysomes, we report a biomimetic interface that integrates carbonic anhydrase within copper phosphate nanoflowers to establish a reaction-diffusion nanoreactor. Light-Driven Intraoctahedral Halide Isomerization in Two-Dimensional Mixed Halide Perovskites.

Two-dimensional metal halide perovskites are emerging materials for quantum light emission and neuromorphic computing owing to their quantum-confined structures and tunable optoelectronic properties. Beyond structural dimensionality, the presence of multiple crystallographically distinct halide sites within a single metal halide octahedron presents a unique opportunity to engineer functionality at the subunit-cell level. Here, we report a light-driven, reversible halide-ion isomerization in single-crystalline BA2PbBrxI4-x (BA = butylammonium, x = 1-3), where ions switch between distinct local

Early detection in oral cancer: are we ready for AI-driven precision?

Oral cancer, particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma, remains a serious health concern, with a poor prognosis and a late diagnosis. Leukoplakia, erythroplakia, lichen planus, and submucous fibrosis are examples of oral potentially malignant illnesses. However, traditional diagnostic approaches are typically laborious, subjective, and unreliable, leading to delayed diagnosis - when therapy options are limited and survival is compromised. In oral cancer, artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine are becoming game-changing technologies that enhance individualized care, treatment plann

Spectral Analysis of Extrahepatic Bile Ducts During Normothermic Liver Machine Perfusion.

Background: Biliary complications (BC) affect 5-32% of liver transplant (LT) patients and include strictures, leaks, stones, and disease recurrence. Their risk increases with extended criteria donor (ECD) livers, contributing to early graft dysfunction. Normothermic liver machine perfusion (NLMP) helps reduce bile duct (BD) damage overall, but anastomotic region issues persist. This study assessed hyperspectral imaging (HSI) as a non-invasive method to evaluate BD viability during NLMP. Methods: Eleven donor livers underwent NLMP with HSI at the start and end. Seven were transplanted; four wer

Alteration in Fluidity of Cell Plasma Membrane in Huntington Disease Revealed by Spectral Phasor Analysis.

Huntington disease (HD) is a late-onset genetic neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) trinucleotide in the exon 1 of the gene encoding the polyglutamine (polyQ). It has been shown that protein degradation and lipid metabolism is altered in HD. In many neurodegenerative disorders, impaired lipid homeostasis is one of the early events in the disease onset. Yet, little is known about how mutant huntingtin may affect phospholipids membrane fluidity. Here, we investigated how membrane fluidity in the living cells (differentiated PC12 and HEK293 cell lines)

Graft incompatibility in fruit trees in early detection: integrating physiological, molecular, and technological approaches.

This review highlights that integrating physiological, molecular, imaging, and AI-based approaches enables early and reliable detection of graft incompatibility, improving rootstock-scion selection, orchard sustainability, fruit productivity, and long-term tree performance. One of the most serious problems in fruit growing is the breaking, weakening, or dying of the tree at the graft union, either within a short period of time or after 10-15 years. This condition is often triggered by environmental factors; however, it is certainly not solely caused by environmental conditions. This problem is

Towards real time AI-augmented fluorescence-guided surgery: Evidence and translational readiness across neurosurgical, gynaecological, and thoracic oncology.

Fluorescence-guided surgery (FgS) is increasingly used across oncologic specialties to enhance intraoperative visualisation of tumour tissue and lymphatic drainage; however, its clinical impact remains limited by heterogeneous tracer uptake, variable signal intensity, and reliance on subjective visual interpretation, leading to inter-operator variability, uncertainty at tumour margins, residual disease, and inconsistent nodal assessment. This narrative review examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing these limitations, synthesising evidence published between January 2000

Improving Micro- and Macro-Algae Speciation Mapping for Management: A Field-Validated Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 Intercomparison in the Indian River Lagoon.

In recent years, the health of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) on Florida's east coast has fluctuated due to recurring harmful algal blooms (HABs). These events typically involve cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, or A. lagunensis (brown tide) causing water-quality degradation and seagrass decline. The IRL is prone to HAB formation, and they have been observed more commonly in recent years. Although HABs can be non-toxic, they can threaten critical primary producers like seagrass and destabilize sediments. Due to their impact, it is critical to improve methods of water quality and algal bloom monit

Adaptive image encryption approach using an enhanced swarm intelligence algorithm.

Chaos-based encryption methods have gained popularity due to the unique properties of chaos. The performance of chaos-based encryption methods is highly impacted by the values of initial and control parameters. Therefore, this work proposes Iterative Cosine operator-based Hippopotamus Optimization (ICO-HO) to select optimal parameters for chaotic maps, which is further used to design an adaptive image encryption approach. ICO-HO algorithm improves the Hippopotamus Optimization (HO) by integrating a new phase (Phase 4) to update the position of the hippopotamus. ICO-HO updates the position of h

Hyperspectral enhanced reality (HYPER) for anatomical liver resection.

BACKGROUND: Clinical evaluation of the demarcation line separating ischemic from non-ischemic liver parenchyma may be challenging. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a noninvasive imaging modality, which combines a camera with a spectroscope and allows quantitative imaging of tissue oxygenation. Our group developed a software to overlay HSI images onto the operative field, obtaining HSI-based enhanced reality (HYPER). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of HYPER to identify the demarcation line after a left vascular inflow occlusion during an anatomical left hepatectomy. MAT
