Our sensory system constantly receives information from the environment and our own body. Despite our impression to the contrary, we remain largely unaware of this information and often cannot report it correctly. Although perceptual processing does not require conscious effort on the part of the observer, it is often complex, giving rise to errors such as incorrect integration of features (illusory conjunctions). In the present study, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the neural bases of feature integration in a dual task that produced ~30% illusions. A distributed set of …

BACKGROUND: Space motion sickness (SMS) remains a troublesome problem during spaceflight. The subjective vertical (SV) conflict theory postulates that all motion sickness provoking situations are characterized by a condition in which the SV sensed from gravity and visual and idiotropic cues differs from the expected vertical. This theory has been successfully used to predict motion sickness in different vehicles on Earth.
METHOD: We have summarized the most outstanding and recent studies on the illusions and characteristics associated with spatial disorientation and SMS during weightlessness,…

Multisensory integration is often thought to occur automatically when sensory cues are spatially and temporally congruent. However, emerging evidence suggests that integration is dynamically shaped by attention, task demands, and action. The present study investigated whether unimodal visual, bimodal congruent (i.e., audiovisual), and bimodal incongruent (i.e., sound-induced flash illusion) perception was modulated by the spatial proximity between a cue and a target location (Experiment 1) and by the actual execution of a goal-directed action (Experiment 2). Participants performed pointing mov

When interacting with the world, one's bodily features are estimated in relation to the objects we handle. Perceived changes to one's hand size and shape alter the perception of the actions that can be performed with that hand. Here, we investigated whether experiencing the illusion of a sixth finger on the hand alters individuals' perception of their action abilities and movement boundaries. After inducing the sensation of having a sixth finger, healthy adult participants estimated the smallest aperture their hand could fit through and the largest object they felt capable of grasping. Our res

Listening to a computer-presented stomach rumble can induce an illusion, whereby the sound seems to arise from one's own body - illusory mislocalisation. This represents one of the few examples of an interoceptive illusion and has been used to examine the nature of interoceptive hunger. The illusion's mechanism(s) is unknown as are the conditions necessary to maximise it. Here, we examine if illusory mislocalisation can be augmented by manipulating the ambiguity of the sound source. Participants were randomised to one of two conditions, either receiving sounds via headphones or from a hidden s

Our results revealed an age-related increase in vibration thresholds, which is consistent with previous research. While male participants showed consist …

Chronic pain alters the experience of owning a body and leads to disturbances in bodily perception. We tested whether women with fibromyalgia (FM) are receptive to bodily illusions of owning a visible and progressively invisible body in immersive virtual reality (VR), and what modulates this experience. Twenty patients participated in two experimental sessions; each session included two conditions in a counterbalanced order. We found that patients with FM could indeed experience virtual embodiment. Sentiment analysis revealed significantly more positive reactions to the progressively invisible…

Multiple sensory stimuli contribute to the conscious awareness of the body. It is well known that limb amputation can result in abnormal body awareness, but the manner in which the CNS constructs and updates a body schema after injury is largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to systematically evaluate the effects of sensory inputs on phantom limb awareness (PLA) shortly after unilateral upper extremity amputation. The location, quality and intensity of spontaneous and tactile-evoked phantom sensations and awareness were assessed in 13 amputees who were referred sequentially for

Metamorphopsia is a type of visual illusion, which has been reported as a rare ictal manifestation. The patient presented with a simple partial status epilepticus characterised by continuous facial metamorphopsia, intermittently accompanied by elementary visual hallucinations or other types of visual illusions. Subtraction single-photon emission computed tomography images showed an increased perfusion in the ventrolateral aspect of the right temporo-occipital junction (middle and inferior occipital, and inferior temporal gyri). The result suggests that the anatomical substrate involved in the …

When we look at bars flashed against a moving background, we see them displaced in the direction of the upcoming motion (flash-grab illusion). It is still debated whether these motion-induced position shifts are low-level, reflexive consequences of stimulus motion or high-level compensation engaged only when the stimulus is tracked with attention. To investigate whether attention is a causal factor for this striking illusory position shift, we evaluated the flash-grab illusion in six patients with damaged attentional networks in the right hemisphere and signs of left visual neglect and six age

The Alice in Wonderland syndrome is a term applied to altered bizarre perceptions of size and shapes of a patient's body and illusions of changes in the forms, dimensions, and motions of objects that a patient with this syndrome encounters. These metamorphopsias arise during complex partial seizures, migraine headaches, infections, and intoxications. The illusions and hallucinations resemble the strange phenomena that Alice experienced in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, whose nom de plume was Lewis Carroll, experienced metamorphopsias. He described t…

Flash lag is a misperception of spatial relations between a moving object and a briefly flashed stationary one. This study began with the observation that the illusion occurs when the moving object continues following the flash, but is eliminated if the object's motion path ends with the flash. The data show that disrupting the continuity of the moving object, via a transient change in size or color, also eliminates the illusion. We propose that this is because a large feature change leads to the formation of a second object representation. Direct evidence for this proposal is provided by the

Our modifications of the methods of otolith organs examination were reported. One of these methods is eccentric rotation without the support of the body which was held in two groups of the persons: control group of 32 healthy persons and 48 patients with unilateral vestibular loss. The second method of otolith organs investigation was evaluation of them by producing dynamic optogravitational reactions and measuring an angle of the eyeballs deviation and time of illusion. Two groups--one consisting 102 healthy persons and second 91 persons with unilateral hearing loss were examined. It was stat

Illusory visual phenomena, such as palinopsia, polyopsia or allesthesia, are rare manifestations of posterior cortical damage. Symptoms are characterized by illusory perceptions, ranging from isolated stationary objects to scenes and moving persons. Such illusions may appear while the original object is still in view, or become manifest with a delay and last for minutes, hours or even days. Some authors have suggested a disinhibited cortical response underlying visual illusions, but experimental studies supporting this hypothesis are lacking. Here, we examined a rare patient who after focal ri…

A 53-year-old black male with no history of neuropsychiatric behavioral problems was treated successfully with propranolol, furosemide, and minoxidil for previously uncontrolled hypertension. However, paranoid ideations, illusions, severe combativeness, and visual hallucinations developed shortly after initiation of the listed therapy. When atenolol was substituted for propranolol, all psychotic behavior resolved.

Integrating multimodal information into a unified perception is a fundamental human capacity. McGurk effect is a remarkable multisensory illusion that demonstrates a percept different from incongruent auditory and visual syllables. However, not all listeners perceive the McGurk illusion to the same degree. The neural basis for individual differences in modulation of multisensory integration and syllabic perception remains largely unclear. To probe the possible involvement of specific neural circuits in individual differences in multisensory speech perception, we first implemented a behavioral

The human visual system has a remarkable ability to accurately estimate the relative brightness of adjacent objects despite large variations in illumination. However, the lightness of two identical equiluminant gray regions can appear quite different when a light-dark luminance transition falls between them. This illusory brightness "filling-in" phenomenon, the Craik-Cornsweet-O'Brien (CCOB) illusion, exposes fundamental assumptions made by the visual system in estimating lightness, but its neural basis remains unclear. While the responses of high-level visual cortex can be correlated with per

Auditory phantom perception, exemplified by tinnitus, is characterized by a perceptual experience without external stimuli. This study utilized two auditory illusions, the Zwicker Tone (ZT) and Conditioned Hallucinations (CH), as proxies to investigate the neural correlates of bottom-up and top-down mechanisms underlying phantom auditory perception. Using a within-subject design, ZT, driven by temporary sensory deficits, and CH, influenced by multisensory expectations, were examined in a sample of healthy participants. Electrophysiological measures revealed distinct time-frequency patterns, wi…
