Neutralizing antibodies mediate virus-immune pathology of COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 is a novel beta-coronavirus causing over 200.000 lethal cases within six months of first infecting humans. SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19, a form of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). COVID-19 is characterized by two phases: the first resembles the flu with pneumonia, but after about seven or eight days the disease suddenly worsens to a sepsis-like syndrome. It is difficult to explain this virus-immune-pathology sequence from virology or immunology only. This paper hypothesizes that host-produced anti-spike protein antibodies are responsible for immune-induced viral dissemination

[The complex etiology of epidemic diseases in calves on large-capacity farms and their clinical and epizootic characteristics].

It is not easy to exactly diagnose the etiology of the mass infections of new-born calves on large farms where considerable losses are suffered. On the basis of the complex epizootological, clinical and laboratory examination in four large calf-rearing facilities, rotaviruses, coronaviruses, the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and the bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) virus, and in some cases also the enteropathogenic E. coli, were found to be etiologically involved in the mass rise of diarrhoea, complicated by respiratory symptoms already during the first days after birth. The clinic

Coevolutionary vaccination dynamics driven by committed influencers on complex networks.

Voluntary vaccination is often challenged by the vaccination dilemma, wherein individual costs conflict with the collective benefits of herd immunity. Motivated by the considerable influence of online "Big Vs," we introduce a coupled vaccination-epidemic coevolution model on scale-free networks. We incorporate a fraction ρ of committed influencers who consistently advocate for vaccination, incorporating a trust-weighting parameter α to quantify their social influence. Multi-agent simulations and heterogeneous mean-field theory demonstrate that strategic placement of influencers is vital: posit

Measles: An Updated Literature Review of the Host Response, Pathogenesis, Complications, Prevention Measures, and Recent Outbreaks.

Measles remains a significant global health threat due to its extreme transmissibility and the potential for severe, long-term complications. This review synthesizes the most up-to-date literature on the host response, immunological impact, current treatments, and prevention of the measles virus (MeV). The review details host immune evasion mechanisms, including the antagonism of interferon signaling, discusses genetic associations with vaccine failure, and explores adjunctive treatments like vitamin A and ribavirin. Despite the success of the two-dose MMR vaccine, recent resurgences in the Un

Modeling the transmission dynamics and control strategies during the 2017 diphtheria outbreak in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Diphtheria has resurged globally, including in Indonesia, despite widespread vaccination since the 1970s. Knowledge gaps persist in understanding contemporary transmission drivers and effective outbreak control, especially in densely populated areas like Jakarta. We analyzed the 2017 Jakarta outbreak data and developed a compartmental model incorporating estimates of population susceptibility and asymptomatic carriers. Key epidemiological parameters were estimated, and various control measures were simulated. Our study found overall diphtheria susceptibility at 12.9 % (95 % CrI: 8.6 %-19.0 %)

Positive Impact of Vaccinal Status Among Notified Measles Cases in Romania in 2020-2024.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Measles is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable disease with significant morbidity in the European region, including Romania, especially in the post-COVID-19 era with low vaccination rates which no longer provide herd immunity. The current study aims to show how vaccination reduces the disease burden. METHODS: A study using 29,148 cases with measles-compatible features in Romania from the 2020-2024 period was performed, analyzing symptoms, complications, and hospitalization rates comparatively between vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups. RESULTS: Our findin

Ipsilateral Radial Neuropathy after COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination in an Immunocompetent Young Man.

The global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic spurred an urgent need for vaccination and herd immunity. Recently, mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 have been used widely despite reports of several adverse events. Most adverse effects are mild, although a few are associated with neurological complications. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of information on peripheral nerve complications after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. We report the case of an immunocompetent young male patient who suffered from ipsilateral wrist drop with multiple lymphadenopathy in the cervical and axillary region after

[Perspectives on recent monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic areas].

Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which used to occur endemically in central and western Africa. As of 25th May, a total of 219 recently confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported from 19 non-endemic countries. This outbreak unusually takes place in non-endemic areas for monkeypox virus and has exhibited features of high risk of human-to-human transmission. Onset of multiple human monkeypox cases may be related to the decreased level of herd cross-immunity after the cessation of smallpox vaccination. Moreover, behavioral patterns in specific populations

Social Distancing, Lockdown and the Wide Use of Mask; A Magic Solution or a Double-Edged Sword for Respiratory Viruses Epidemiology?

The use of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as social distancing, lockdowns and the massive use of masks, have not only largely prevented the spread of SARS-CoV-2, but also of other respiratory viruses such as influenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This decrease has been so high that, in most countries, the influenza and RSV epidemic has not occurred. Far from being a beneficial fact, this can be problematic, since the absence of circulation of certain pathogens can lead to a decrease in herd immunity against them. This can promote the rise of more serious, longer-lasting

Seroprevalence of IgM and IgG Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in Asymptomatic People in Wuhan: Data from a General Hospital Near South China Seafood Wholesale Market during March to April in 2020.

The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and G (IgG) antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic people in Wuhan. This was a cross-sectional study, which enrolled 18,712 asymptomatic participants from 154 work units in Wuhan. Pearson Chi-square test, t-test, and Mann-Whitney test were used to compare the standardized seroprevalence of IgG and IgM for age and gender between different groups. The results indicated the standardized seroprevalence of IgG and IgM showed a downward trend and was significantly higher among females than males. Besides, diffe

Complications of measles: a case series.

Measles, which was once thought to be a disappearing viral infection due to effective vaccination, has been re-emerging globally, with increasing cases in adolescents and adults. This has been attributed to anti-vaccination campaigning in the early 21st century, which has resulted in a drop in overall herd immunity. In this case series we report three patients with complications secondary to measles who presented to a hospital in Malta in 2019. Through this series, we discuss the range of possible complications caused by the measles virus, ranging from mild viraemic symptoms to multiorgan invo

Neurological Complications of Measles (Rubeola).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Owing to vaccine hesitancy, there has been a resurgence of measles infections in developed countries. Practitioners can expect to see an increase in patients with neurologic complications of measles. These devastating disorders include primary measles encephalitis, acute post measles encephalitis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), and measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE). RECENT FINDINGS: Although there are many unanswered questions regarding the neurologic complications of measles, recent advances have led to better understanding of the mechanism of the spr

Why are people with asthma susceptible to pneumonia? A review of factors related to upper airway bacteria.

Asthma and pneumonia are common respiratory conditions globally, affecting individuals of all ages. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the predominant bacterial cause of pneumonia, with nasopharyngeal carriage an important step towards invasive and pulmonary disease. Vaccines provide individual protection, and also prevent nasopharyngeal carriage, providing herd immunity. Asthma is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, but there is limited information on the underlying mechanism of this predisposition. Both asthma and its treatment may conceivably alter propensity to, and density of, carria

Global rabies management: perspectives on regional strategies for prevention and control.

Rabies is a major neglected zoonotic disease, despite the availability of highly sensitive diagnostic tests and efficacious human and animal vaccines. Perpetuation of rabies among multiple species of bats and wild carnivores, together with the presence of diverse lyssaviruses, remains a challenge for the prevention and control of this disease. However, most of the global burden may be reduced by mass vaccination of dogs, the major reservoir. Elimination of human rabies mediated by dogs may be feasible, based upon the elicitation of herd immunity, the application of sound health economic princi

Cost-effectiveness of human papillomavirus vaccination in the United States.

We describe a simplified model, based on the current economic and health effects of human papillomavirus (HPV), to estimate the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination of 12-year-old girls in the United States. Under base-case parameter values, the estimated cost per quality-adjusted life year gained by vaccination in the context of current cervical cancer screening practices in the United States ranged from $3,906 to $14,723 (2005 US dollars), depending on factors such as whether herd immunity effects were assumed; the types of HPV targeted by the vaccine; and whether the benefits of preventing

An Immunomagnetic Bead-Based Sandwich ELISA for the Detection of Brucella in Milk.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease caused by Brucella spp., posing significant impacts on animal health, livestock production, and public health. Infected dairy animals can shed the pathogen in milk, making milk a noninvasive and readily accessible sample for disease surveillance. Therefore, detection of Brucella in milk can be used for monitoring brucellosis in dairy herds. In this study, polyclonal antibodies were produced by immunizing camels with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from Brucella abortus vaccine strain 19 (A19). These antibodies were subsequently conjugated to magnet

Spread and impact of the Schmallenberg virus epidemic in France in 2012-2013.

BACKGROUND: The Schmallenberg virus (SBV) emerged in Europe in 2011 and caused a widespread epidemic in ruminants. In France, SBV emergence was monitored through a national multi-stakeholder surveillance and investigation system. Based on the monitoring data collected from January 2012 to August 2013, we describe the spread of SBV in France during two seasons of dissemination (vector seasons 2011 and 2012) and we provide a large-scale assessment of the impact of this new disease in ruminants. RESULTS: SBV impact in infected herds was primarily due to the birth of stillborns or deformed foetuse

Multi-omics integration of Fst, GWAS, TWAS and transcriptomics revealed candidate genes and pathways associated with pneumonia lesion scores in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory diseases significantly impair pig growth performance by reducing average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency. Pneumonia lesion score (PLS) is a reliable phenotypic indicator for detecting respiratory issues in pig herds, including subclinical infections that often remain undiagnosed. In this study, PLS data was collected from 327 Large White pigs, and whole-genome resequencing (WGS) was performed. Lung tissue samples from pigs with extremely high and low PLS values were subjected to transcriptomic sequencing and Fixation Index (Fst) analysis. Additionally, a trans

Transmission intensity and the immunoepidemiology of bancroftian filariasis in East Africa.

Previous attempts to determine the interactions between filariasis transmission intensity, infection and chronic disease have been limited by a lack of a theoretical framework that allows the explicit examination of mechanisms that may link these variables at the community level. Here, we show how deterministic mathematical models, in conjunction with analyses of standardized field data from communities with varying parasite transmission intensities, can provide a particularly powerful framework for investigating this topic. These models were based on adult worm population dynamics, worm initi
