Immunocompromised individuals (patients with cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, transplant recipients) and pregnant women are at greater risk of complicated foodborne illness than the general population. Though rare, Campylobacter enteritis-associated acute pancreatitis has not been reported in an immunocompromised host to our knowledge. Herein, we describe a case of Campylobacter infection-associated pancreatitis in a renal transplant recipient. This case highlights the need for food safety education for the immunocompromised, emphasizes the role of health care providers in encouraging adherence to …

Opportunistic fungal infection is a common cause of serious morbidity and mortality in the immunocompromised host. Combination of pattern recognition with knowledge of the clinical setting is the best approach to pulmonary infectious processes. The aim of this article is to assess the chest radiographs and CT imaging features of different opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a human herpes virus that causes significant morbidity and mortality in immunosuppressed children. CMV primary infection causes a clinically mild disease in healthy children, usually in early childhood; the virus then utilises several mechanisms to establish host latency, which allows for periodic reactivation, particularly when the host is immunocompromised. It is this reactivation that is responsible for the significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised children. We review CMV infection in the primary immunodeficient host, including early identification of

Nontuberculous mycobacteria are pathogens with diverse manifestations in immunocompromised hosts. The lesser-known Mycobacterium haemophilum usually causes cutaneous infection. Diagnosis is challenging but is aided by molecular testing and multidisciplinary communication. We present an immunocompromised patient with disseminated cutaneous mycobacterial infection with digital tenosynovitis.

Tsukamurella spp. are gram-positive rods that can be isolated from the environment in soil and moist areas. In rare instances, they are known to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts. We present the first reported case of Tsukamurella endocarditis in an immunocompromised patient who was successfully treated with a 6-week course of imipenem and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium species infection causes malabsorption and severe diarrhea in immunocompromised hosts. Association of Yellow Nail Syndrome (YNS) and Cryptosporidiosis is rare and has not been reported till date. Immunity can also be affected in this case of YNS is associated with autoimmune disorders.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe a case of persistent diarrhea in an 8 month old YNS patient. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining and Saffranine-Methylene blue revealed oocyts of Cryptosporidium species. Following appropriate treatment, the patient's symptoms improved and the patient…

We report a prolonged 59-day MPXV infection in a highly immunocompromised HIV-positive patient. We found progressive within-host viral diversification across lesions from different anatomical sites, including the emergence of a mutation previously associated with tecovirimat resistance. These findings highlight the need to investigate alternative therapeutic strategies for MPXV in severely immunocompromised patients.

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, invasive fungal infection that affects patients who are severely immunocompromised, as well as patients with diabetes and persons with immunocompetence who have major trauma. Mucormycosis manifests in several clinical forms, including sino-orbital, rhinocerebral, sinopulmonary, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, musculoskeletal, osteoarticular, and disseminated mucormycosis, as well as single-organ disease. Although mucormycosis is often lethal, early intervention reduces mortality. Successful treatment depends on early detection and staging of the disease, tim

Torquetenovirus (TTV) is the most abundant component of human virome. Virologists have long ignored this orphan and highly divergent virus, in part because TTV cannot be cultured and because it lacks serology reagents and animal models. Nevertheless, it is almost endemic worldwide and is insensitive to current antiviral drugs, so its monitoring is useful in various conditions. To date, TTV as a marker has proved useful in at least two circumstances: to identify anthropogenic pollution and to assess functional immune competence in immunosuppressed individuals. This review summarizes recent find

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fungal infections-related immune reconstitution syndrome (IRS) poses challenging diagnostic and management issues in immunocompromised hosts. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding its pathophysiologic basis, presentation, and treatment strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Existing evidence suggests that IRS is a state of an imbalance between protective immunity and inflammatory pathology versus anti-inflammatory responses that restrain inflammation. IRS has been observed in diverse hosts including HIV-infected patients initiating potent antiretroviral ther…

Mucormycosis, an invasive fungus with a variety of clinical presentation, is a devastating infection in immunocompromised host. Here an unusual case of pulmonary mucormycosis is introduced in an immunodeficient patient in which pneumothorax was followed by reversed halo sign (RHS). The clinicians, who visit immunocompromised persons with pneumothorax, should be considerate to take immediate imaging and pathologic measures to confirm or reject mucormycosis.

Rhino-orbital fungal infections are serious and life threatening complications of immunocompromised host. The authors reported two cases of rapid progressive proptosis and eyelid necrosis of immunocompromised patients who suffered from highly malignant T-celled lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma and congenital heart disease with multiple anomalies. Although early diagnosis was made and prompt treatments including medical and surgical interventions were performed, both patients died.

BACKGROUND: Adenoviral infections are endemic in the pediatric population. Most of these infections are mild and self-limited in immunocompetent individuals. Although in profoundly immunocompromised hosts after solid organ or stem cell transplantation, adenovirus may cause fulminant hepatitis or other life-threatening infections, this is a rare complication in patients receiving standard chemotherapy.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of severe adenovirus hepatitis in a 7-month-old child receiving induction chemotherapy for hepatoblastoma who fully recovered after treatment with cidofovir.

In recent years, it has been recognised that the community respiratory viruses are a frequent cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in immunocompromised hosts such as bone marrow transplant recipients. By contrast, infections by non-polio enteroviruses have rarely been reported after stem cell transplantation. We present four cases of acute respiratory illness with enterovirus isolated as the sole pathogen from bronchoalveolar lavage. All four patients developed pneumonia and three died of progressive pneumonia, which reflects the severity of this complication. We conclude that…

Solid Organ transplant recipients are at risk of opportunistic infections due to immunosuppressed state, prolonged hospital stay and exposure to multiple antibiotics. Subcutaneous mycoses are heterogenous group of fungal infections affecting dermis and subcutaneous tissue due to penetrating injury. Subcutaneous mycosis in immunocompromised individual causes significant morbidity in the form of chronic discharging sinuses and systemic spread. Parathyridaria percutanea is an emerging cause of subcutaneous mycosis in transplant patients and is difficult to identify phenotypically. It is relativel
