Individuals with DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) are often suspected of minimizing the nature of their recurrent, problematic, impulsive aggressive behavior due to the social undesirability of these behaviors. Our first study involved 400 study participants categorized as Healthy Controls (HC), Psychiatric Controls (PC) and as having IED and included the Crowne-Marlowe Social Desirability Scale (SDS), the Lie Scale from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R Lie), and the Readiness to Change (Anger) Questionnaire (RTC). IED study participants had lower SDS and lower E

OBJECTIVES: There is a high prevalence of smoking among individuals with bipolar disorder, yet there have been few efforts to identify potential contributing factors as a means of improving prevention and treatment approaches. The goal of this study was to examine the association between impulsivity and the initiation or maintenance of smoking in bipolar disorder.
METHODS: Participants comprised 97 adolescents and adults, ages 16-50, with bipolar I disorder who were experiencing a mixed or manic episode at the time of study enrollment. Participants completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11

In this narrative review, the authors examine the multidimensional nature and presentations of impulsivity after stroke. Impulsivity manifests as immediate or premature responses, impaired delayed gratification, perseverance despite punishment, and other displays of impaired emotional and behavioral regulation. The literature on the assessments, outcomes, and treatment of patients with these various manifestations after a cerebrovascular injury is reviewed. Findings from case reports indicate that poststroke impulsivity may manifest across neurobehavioral syndromes that are not well defined in

Impulsivity and compulsivity have been considered opposite poles of a continuous spectrum, but their relationship seems to be more complex. Disorders characterized by impulsivity often have features of compulsivity and vice-versa. Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by repetitive behaviors and impaired inhibition of these behaviors, suggesting a similarity to the frequently excessive, unnecessary, and unwanted rituals of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There are, however, important differences be-tween ICDs and OCD. The construct of compulsivity as related to ICDs and OCD w

RESULTS: Cyproterone (50 to 100mg - mean: 92.5mg daily) improved significantly aggressive and impulsive behavior related to Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia but had no effect on aberrant motor behavior. When cyproterone was stopped, aggressive behaviors reappeared more rapidly in vascular dementia.
CONCLUSION: Cyproterone acetate is then an interestin …

This study examined the relationship between child maltreatment, impulsivity, and deliberate self-harm in a sample of college students. Four subtypes of impulsivity (urgency, premeditation, perseverance, and sensation seeking) were examined. Results show that participants who report child maltreatment histories also report higher levels of negative affect and higher levels of impulsivity, specifically negative urgency. In addition, those who report histories of child maltreatment are more likely to endorse deliberate self-harm behaviors as an adult. Of the 4 subtypes of impulsivity, urgency wa

Impulsivity and hostility are often thought to be interrelated among depressed patients with suicidal behavior, but few studies have examined this relationship empirically. In this study, we assessed trait impulsivity and hostility among 52 DSM-IV bipolar subjects with and without histories of suicide attempts. Impulsivity and hostility were correlated among attempters (r = .41, p = .03) but not non-attempters (r = .22, p = .28). As compared to non-attempters, attempters had significantly higher levels of overall hostility, more extensive subcomponents of hostility, and a trend toward higher o

Impulse-control problems such as gambling, increased spending, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating are thought to be influenced by temperamental, genetic, and physiological risk factors. In addition, dopamine receptor agonists have been implicated in some cases. It is postulated that aripiprazole may cause impulse-control problems because it can produce a hyperdopaminergic state in the mesolimbic pathway (reward system) through its predominant action on dopamine D3 receptors. We present the case of a patient with bipolar disorder and previous gambling behavior, in whom the gambling behavior

OBJECTIVES: Self-injury behavior is a prevalent mental health problem among adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is closely associated with the development of alexithymia, impulsivity, and self-injury behavior in adolescents and young adults with mental disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to classify psychiatric patients aged 12 to 24 years into psychological subtypes based on alexithymic and impulsive traits, to explore differences in self-injury behavior among these subtypes, and to examine whether different forms of childhood maltreatment are associa

The present study explored the associations among impulsivity, gambling cognitions, and behavioral adherence to the gambler's fallacy in university students (N = 142). Both impulsivity and gambling cognitions were significant predictors of non-problem and problem gambler categories as defined the Problem Gambling Severity Index. A logistic regression analysis showed that the independent contribution of cognition was statistically significant but that the contribution of impulsivity was not. A behavioral measure of gambling was obtained by asking participants to play an online game of roulette

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pathological buying (PB) is often assumed to be related to deficits in impulse control. Distortions in judging elapsed time are one component of behavioral impulsivity. This study was set out to examine the hypothesis that PB propensity is associated with distorted time perception, such that time is perceived to pass more slowly.
METHODS: The study is based on a convenience sample of 78 adults. Symptom severity of PB and related problems/disorders (substance use, borderline, depression, mania, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) as well as four dimensions of trait impulsiv

Impulse control behaviours (ICBs) are a range of behaviours linked by their reward-based, repetitive natures. They can be precipitated in Parkinson's disease (PD) by dopamine replacement therapy, often with detrimental consequences for patients and caregivers. While now a well-recognised non-motor feature of treated PD, much remains unknown about the influence of risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, vulnerability factors for specific types of behaviour and the optimal management strategies. Imaging studies have identified structural and functional changes in striatal and prefrontal bra

Psychometric questionnaires are used to assess canine temperament, aiding in the identification of behavioral and affective traits. Impulsivity, defined as a predisposition toward rapid, unplanned reactions to internal or external stimuli, is one such trait and is considered a contributing factor in various behavioral problems, including aggression. This study aimed to translate and validate the Dog Impulsivity Assessment Scale (DIAS) for use in German-speaking populations. Data from 2,788 dog-caretaker dyads were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), revealing a four-factor struc

The acquired preparedness model posits that impulsivity influences the development of outcome expectancies that then influence the engagement in a specific risk taking behavior. The purpose of this study was to test the acquired preparedness model for gambling behavior of college students using a multidimensional approach to impulsivity. Employing a structural equation approach, it was predicted that a full mediational model that includes multiple dimensions of impulsivity and multiple outcome expectancies would predict gambling frequency and gambling symptomatology. Support was found for the

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is typically defined as a sleep-related sensorimotor disorder, yet converging evidence indicates that it also involves clinically relevant behavioral dimensions. This case-control study systematically examined impulsivity, aggression, and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in 27 RLS patients compared to 21 healthy controls, using standardized questionnaires (BIS-11, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11; AQ, Aggression Questionnaire; mMIDI, Modified Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview), a Go/NoGo inhibitory control task, and clinical sleep measures, with reassessment af

Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood in which subjects exhibit characteristic behaviors, such as increases in impulsivity, social interactions, novelty-seeking and risk-taking behaviors. Previous studies have shown that adolescents often respond prematurely in operant tasks, but it remains unclear whether this behavior reflects general hyperactivity, cognitive impairments, or if it is a specific form of impulsivity. Here, we trained male and female adolescent and adult Long-Evans rats in a rewarded operant task that required withholding an action sequence for a 2.5

Adverse, unfavourable life conditions, particularly during early life stages and infancy, can lead to epigenetic regulation of genes involved in stress-response, behavioral disinhibition, and cognitive-emotional systems. Over time, the ultimate final outcome can be expressed through behaviors bedeviled by problems with impulse control, such as eating disorders, alcoholism, and indiscriminate social behavior. While many reward gene polymorphisms are involved in impulsive behaviors, a polymorphism by itself may not translate to the development of a particular behavioral disorder unless it is imp…

Seventy-eight female and 78 male pathological gamblers admitted to an outpatient treatment program were compared regarding a profile of risk-taking behaviors (suicide attempts, illegal activities meant to finance gambling, sexual risky behavior, and alcohol abuse). The Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 (BIS-11), and an adaptation of the HIV Risk Behavior Scale were used. Females attempted more suicide than males. Men had more sexual risky behavior and alcohol abuse than women. Younger age and depression were risk factors for

Impulsivity is a complex and important phenomenon in mood disorders. Impulse control disorders, as defined in DSM, are more frequent in mood disorders especially in Bipolar Disorder type I, and are associated with a more severe course of illness. Dimensional studies demonstrate that impulsivity is a core manifestation of bipolar disorder both as state- and trait-dependent markers in patients. Comorbid substance use disorders are often associated with a higher level of impulsivity whereas the relation between suicidal behaviors and higher impulsivity remains uncertain. Moreover, neuropsychologi
